Steve McConnell's 1993 was released in the same year I graduated in Computer Science and started work. At the time I skimmed this book, not finding it particularly helpful. I was looking for a book that told me how to do exactly what I wanted to do at that particular moment.
That, I now realise, is not the way good engineers learn. Through McConnell's analogy we learn that software design and implementation is very like construction.
Twelve years later I picked up the second edition and recognised vital skills, habits and mental models that I have developed over the years. Experienced programmers will find that it repeats and clarifies what they have learned, perhaps making them realise why they do certain things without knowing why it works out better that way. Of course there's stuff in there that I have not learned yet too.
Readers of the original book will find it has been updated to include much that wasn't around in 1993... Java, C# and even internet applications in general. The book has a fresh feel, yet the original concepts survive the changes in technology, which is really the strength of the book. It teaches you timeless techniques and ways of thinking, rather than specific programming details.
If making software is construction, this book is a guide for all you quality builders out there; the ones who make applications with solid foundations, durable construction that meet or exceed all the users expectations. |
