MSL Pointer Review:
Written in a typically Head First refreshing style, this is one of the easiest to read and absorb among the major reference sources for design patterns. |

An American reader (MSL quote), USA

I am reviewing books as texts for continuing education text book. I found it to be both effective and enjoyable to read. Topics were presented in fun but most importantly accessible way, which invited the reader to go deeper into the topic. Design Patterns can be a very challenging to discuss and an academic approach is as much a barrier as most programmers short attention span. This book can serve as a gateway to the subject for both the casual reader as well as an excellent text for an introductory course on Design Patterns. I have and continue to recommend this book to anyone who is interested in an introduction to Design Patterns. |

This book was recommended by a friend. When I got the book and started to look at it I was afraid I had just wasted my money. The style of the book is so different from other technical books I have read, I thought I would not be able to read this one. This was not true. The book is really easy to read and I found the style perfect for this topic. I can't say enough good things about this book. I can say that I am a C# developer and I was totally able to relate to 99% of all the examples in this book. If anything this book will help you understand how similar the to languages and their frameworks are similar. |

Different. Is the definition of this book. They teach you a new method, a new perspective of learning something. Usually, if you buy a book about Design Patterns you'll probably use it just in time, or just to a fast consult. This Head First not. You want to read. It's funny. It's under- standable. It's easy.
It was really funny to read about Observer and Subject dialog at Observer Pattern, two interfaces that talk each other, their relation- ship. Pretty cool. I think it's the best way to stuck something usually boring into the brain. Some humor is necessary and maybe the key to pass so many information without lose the main point. The topics are very easy and they walk slow, soft, don't try to burn your neurones out. Also, a lot of arrows, pictures, stories and everything else helps your eyes to bring to your head the big idea of the issue.
Some exercises are very important too. You can buy this book and make sure that you'll do learn about patterns. |

I have struggled for quite a while to have a grasp of what pattern are and then, above all, how to apply to my coding. I read original GOF books, well, I have to say, maybe too good to use in real life! I read Martin Fowler's book, examples just snippet.
Every example in this book is put in context, and very well explained the upside and downside why the pattern should be used. I feel I am enlightened in design even before I finish the book, not kept in dark, or guess which pattern is better in my coding, now I understand, why which pattern is better.
I can't stand that some guys give this book one star,or three stars. I went out of my way to read their view, one guy complained of no introdution to Java as examples are written in Java. My advice is this book is about design pattern, not about learn a certain language, by reading this book to learn Java, you are missing the point! Another guy whines this book does't look like a technical book. What's wrong with some jokes or cross words. You can read original GOF books! I really doubt how many people really understand what the book is talking about after the first one or two shots.
This book deserves 6 stars. I recommend anybody interested in design pattern buy this book. Conditions apply, except you are a guru in design, I mean a real guru, not somebody knowing tweaking code to get their goal! |

At first, the pagecount is intimidating but once you start reading you realize the format bloats the size somewhat. But, do not think that it being oversized means there is not much here. This is one of the best programming books I have yet encountered. No other self-study tool for programming has provided such a rapid learning curve in my experience. And after reading this one, I can hardly wait to start another. In addition, this book makes for a handy reference after reading. Very highly recommended to share with your Java software team in particular. The format is to present a design problem then solve it with a design pattern. The examples are simple yet complex enough to map to real world concepts. The book is packed with class diagrams and enough code examples to illustrate each of the many patterns it discusses. Again, very highly recommended. |
