In planning a trip to Great Britain, I have purchased three travel books: Lonely Planet, Eyewitness and Frommer's. I would rank them in that order as far as helpfulness in planning our trip. Here are my reasons: I have found Lonely Planet's sections on "where to sleep" and "where to eat" are much more extensive, informative and include a wider variety in price ranges than the other two books. Also, they have more information on some of the smaller towns that are off the beaten track. I enjoyed the wonderful photographs, maps and illustrations in the Eyewitness Guide to Great Britain and if you can afford two books, it is a great way to prepare for what you will see. However, since I only have room for one travel book in my small suitcase, I plan to take the Lonely Planet book with me on our upcoming trip.

This is an excellent guidebook. The only problem with it is the quality of the city maps, which are almost impossible to read. I saw an earlier edition in which they were in color and much better. They must have tried to save money in this edition by doing them in grayscale.

We brought this with us thru London and Scotland. I used it to make bed and breakfast reservations before we left and it was most accurate. This is an excellent reference book to have and one which all others are gagged against. Highly recommended.

Some people buy Lonely Planet guides and use them like bibles. Some people buy Lonely Planet guides so that they can avoid anything that is recommended and therefore avoid the people who use them like bibles. Then there is the middle road, who buys them to fill in the gaps.

My travels in Britain have not relied on my copy of Lonely Planet. I try not to rely on any guide. But sometimes you need something other than the local tourist brochures, websites and recommendations from friends. You can do a lot worse than this guide for filling that gap.

This was the first LP guide I purchased. I highly recommend this guide book and used it extensively, while traveling in England and Scotland.

When I first got off the plane and ended up at the airport, I made the mistake of making a hotel reservation through the Thomas Cook booth at the train station. That was a mistake. The next day, I pulled out my LP guide, and found a hotel down the street that was half the price, and it was cleaner, and nicer to boot. From that moment onwards, I was hooked on LP guides.

Since I was traveling solo, and had a rail pass, I pretty much decided where I wanted to go when I woke up each morning. I would find a hotel when it started to get dark. When that would happen, I would pull out this guide, and find a place to stay. Recommended.

This summer I took an awesome two week tour of Great Britain with Contiki Tours. The tour was great because of how it mixed a rigid tour with free time. My free time was excellent thanks to the information in this guide. I had used Lonely Planet before when I visited China. They did a great job on that book and they did a great job on this one. The information, history, culture and advice are priceless. This is a great guidebook to have. Lonely Planet might not have zillions of color pictures, but it has priceless information and commentary.

This guidebook was my constant companion for my 3- 1/2 week trip through England, Scotland and Wales. I'd never traveled abroad before, but felt totally prepared, and had a wonderful trip. Excellent info on transport, B&BS, sights, the works. I was always the go-to person for itinerary planning within the group of friends I was traveling w/, b/c of my LP guide. In a class by itself. Give me my passport, my ATM/VISA card, and an LP guide and I'll go anywhere.

I have bought Lonely Planet guidebooks for both Ireland and Britain and I have zero regrets in doing so. I simply could not have survived w/out it in Ireland and it did not disappoint for Britain either. It is a great overview guide and covers most everything w/some detail but leaves it to you to do the exploring. Also, what is best about the guides is the way they respect all budget levels. For me I really like this, because I found myself mixing between hostels, B&Bs, and ritzy hotels and the LP was a great guide for all of them. I'm thinking of France or Germany next and I am sure the LP will be my guide of choice.

I have traveled to England a dozen times and I own current editions of 12 different guidebooks. This is far and away the best. It has the most useful information in the easiest to use format. For one thing it has all the travel planning facts you need. In addition, the destinations are described with writing that is evocative, imaginative and accurate. The recommendations are reliable and I was never steered wrong in selecting lodgings and restaurants. Before I found this book, I had to combine three different books to get all the information that's included in this one. From a veteran traveler, I highly recommend the Lonely Planet guide.
