The author shares ideas about personal integration with uncommon eloquence and a deep understanding of the human condition. Our true identity is in our moment-to-moment experiences rather than in our past or future. Concern about anything but the present is an unhealthy identification with the mind that can only cause pain and an illusion of control. Being totally aware of ourselves in each moment actually requires little effort or direction if we stop our thoughts long enough to find the pure consciousness that exists in the gaps between them. These ideas will be radical for most Westerners, but they are so smoothly elucidated that almost all seekers of inner truth will find something of value in the program. |

One of the best books to come along in years. Every sentence rings with truth and power. |

Tolle has succeeded on two fronts: synthesizing the teachings of masters such as Jesus and the Buddha into an easily accessible guige to achieving spiritual consciousness and making a strong case that the inability of humans to free themselves from dominance by the mind and live in the present is the root cause for misery in the world... He makes enlightenment seem attainable and necessary for both individual peace and the health of the planet. |

Fresh, revealing, current, new inspiration. Out of the many spiritual books that cross my desk this one stands out from the flock... If you are considering getting back in touch with your soul, this book is a great companion. |

First, let me say that the audio CD's convey Eckhart Tolle's message more clearly and personally in his own words better than the book can. The information conveyed, although sounding easy- stilling the mind & being in the NOW (as opposed to the past and future thinking)is not easy to achieve and requires practice and repitition (which the audio CD's provide).
Secondly, the book and CD's are helpful to advanced humanity who have already achieved mental and personality development (most people have not) and also presupposes that there is some spiritual development from previous lives and are now discontent with the mind/personality and materialism of the three lower worlds (physical, emotional and mental)to serve as a catalyst in the transformation/spiritual advancement. This is the same error people make when learning Buddhism (no mind) which is for advanced souls to fully undertake to be of value and most people on the spiritual path should start with spirituality meditations such as Bhakti yoga(devotional/emotional plane after achieving the physical plane discipline of Hatha yoga and before attempting the mental plane discipline of Raja yoga or Buddhism or the "Power of Now").
We are all evolving (at different levels) on the spiritual path and should know where we stand on it to continue our development- first in the three worlds of mental and personality development (we all have developed physical and emotional bodies) and then in the spiritual realm of transmuting the lower into the higher (the spiritual initiations achieved through effort, time and different spiritual meditations/practices to hasten them). The womb recapitulates the previous stages of mankind (fish, amphibious, reptilian, etc.) and the then we recapitulate our development from previous lives when we are born(physical, emotional and then mental and finally personality which integrates the lower three if we have achieved that in previous lives and evolved to that point). Finally, the spiritual stages are recapitulated (usually beginning in our 30's if we have advanced/evolved that far previously and are ready to pick up where we left off). We can then hasten our spiritual development by undertaking a more rigorous campaign of meditations, learning spiritually etc. at that point. |

First of all, let me say this book isn't for everyone. I noticed the most common complaint about Eckhart Tolle is that he doesn't have enough ideas, and that he keeps focusing on one idea. Actually, the truth is even worse than the accusation, not only does Mr. Tolle focus on one idea, but he lets it be known over and over again that the idea is unimportant, and that the idea is only a reminder of the one focal point that remains at the heart of our existence.
Unfortunately despite Mr. Tolle's profession's to being free from the Ego, he does spend a bit of time being insincerely humble (he constantly refers to everyone else as "human's" implying he is above all that human nonsense) which I find annoying. He also has a bad habit of spouting his opinions about life, homosexuality, his love of egalitarianism, his limited understanding of hisotry, his rejection of absolute moral truth; and then setting up the logic of his talk to imply if you disagree with him then it's simply because you are simply unconcsious. This is the kind of name calling that goes on when people don't have enough substance to back up their argument, only Mr. Tolle does a very subtle job of it. And the thing that annoys me to no end is how he implies that an enlightened person never gets angry and using Jesus as an example. Then saying when the gospels show Jesus getting angry it was a misunderstanding by the apostles. So The Apostles didn't understand Jesus but Tolle does? (YAWN) But that's generally a New Age thing where they see anger, even justified and necessary anger, as something against nature. I'm not saying Tolle doesn't give some insights into some of Jesus' sayings, just that he mispresents Jesus at times as someone who sat on a proverbial pillow all day.
So why did I give this work 5 stars? Because the one idea that does exist here and in all of Eckhart Tolle's works, is the fact that we lose our consciousness, our connection to ourselves in thoughts of the future, of plans, of the past, of bad days, of tensions in our bodies. We lose ourselves in life by stress and lose and eventually it wears us down to the point where even the slightest inconviencence can bring us to a point of illusion. Sometimes even to insanity. Really, the only thing Mr. Tolle teaches that is, in a way that has been said before but never in a way I could fully absorb, is how to flow with time rather than trying to run ahead of it, catch it by its tail or somehow cheat it. The power of now doesn't mean ignoring past or future. Nor is it particularly time related. It simply means existing fully and placing priorities as their proximity to our existence. Priorities not in the senese of plans or thoughts but merely priorities in relation to our awareness. The breath you are taking right now should fill you with more energy and inspiration than the greatest of the worlds achievements that occured 10 years ago... or even 10 minutes ago. This is the key.
While most people get annoyed by the repition of this message, for me it was extremely necessary and I needed not only to hear the message once but over and over and over again. I've listened to practically every CD every released by Mr. Tolle at least 10 times each.
What do I have to show for it? I have a deeper understanding of myself at the most fundamental level and because of that I'm able to free myself from the world that tries to make me blind to my own existence by defining me with words and ideas. It is only when we free ourselves from this mask are we able to see our true self and our true relationship to the world. This is not to imply that words can't represent real things, only that they are just that, representations and not the things themselves. Until we truly understand this we become possesed by that which we call our lives.
While I do recommend the CD version of Mr. Tolle's works, I'm not sure it's for everyone. Many people I know who have heard me playing these CDs said they hated his voice and that it was annoying. For me, however, it helps me relax and relate to the message a whole lot better. A matter of taste, I guess.
One thing is for certain, if you are stressed out by life and caught up in the situations of your world then reading or listening to this book only once will not be enough. You need to remind yourself of the message over and over again until it becomes a part of you. If you get tired of listening to The Power of Now then there is a large library of other CDs you can listen to, each with a unique and enlightening approach to the same thing: Life.
I'm not sure if anyone in my life looks at me and marvels on how enlightened I am... lol... but I do breathe a lot easier than I ever did before. And I am able to love myself and my family in a way I would only allow at brief intervals before. I can taste life and feel the sounds around me with more clarity. And when I find that I'm unable to capture the moment I've learned to experience that unconsciousness with awareness and my suffering transforms into a calm inner peace.
I am no longer afraid of situations in the world because at the center of it all I am. And it ain't me and it ain't you, babe. |

I'm surprised by the number of reviewers who expect to become "enlightened" simply by reading a book. Anyone who has spent time studying the Eastern philosophies that Tolle draws from would understand that ultimate "Truth" cannot be demonstrated or given, it can only be pointed towards. And Tolle does just that. It's no wonder that so many Western readers would have a hard time digesting what he is trying to say. We are goal oriented, always looking forward, our thoughts behind us and in front of us in the past and the future. To stop and live in the moment might even seem ridiculous.
To live in the "Now" means just that. The past is gone and the future has not come (paraphrasing the Buddha). We cannot go into the past and when the future gets here, it is simply the "Now," the only thing that has ever existed. The real message here is to get your happiness from what is happening right NOW, this moment. Don't place contentment in the future: "I'll be happy when I get a nice car. Things will be better when I get that promotion. I'd be complete if I could only meet someone."
Try to imagine just "being," that is to see the world as we once did when we were children. Remember that time when everything we saw, felt, smelled, and sensed was amazing and curious? But as adults, we've rationalized away the true awesomeness of being into a word like "tree" or "cloud." But what do we really understand about these things beyond the concepts we've placed on them? To be lost in and controlled by one's thoughts is like being caught in a river, or as Siddhartha said, to become a "leaf in the wind." Without the right understanding, you have no control over how the events in your life affect you, good or bad. But that can change.
If this book even begins to help you see things differently than how you've come to accept them, then the price is less than trivial. This isn't about changing your religious beliefs, it's about changing the way you experience existense. Simply reading The Power of Now will not "wake" you up. But it might stir you.

I highly recommend this book to everyone (and have been telling everyone I know about it). The concepts are familiar from similar types of books but instead of the fluffy, feel-good stuff in other books, Mr. Tolle gives real life ways of being more peaceful. Believe me, if you apply his principles to your life you will be at peace. But it takes practice so don't get discouraged with yourself. Think about how long you have been thinking the way you currently think so if it takes a couple months or a couple years isn't it worth it to have inner peace? The principles outlined in this book as well as Mr. Tolle's A New Earth should be taught in every church, school and workplace. It's not about any religion, so if you can overlook the references to evolution, anyone can apply these principles to their lives.

Eckhart Tolle's wonderful masterpiece about living in the now was a true inspiration to me. I have this book along with his CD collections and highly recommend them. They have helped me understand about my ego and the pain body. His books have made me aware of the internal work necessary as I strive for inner peace. I saw him live at Agape Church outside of Los Angeles a couple of years ago. He is a true inspiration and an incredible teacher for all of us. I had a few of his videos. So if you can't see him live purchase one and get a feel for this man. His suffering (he was in deep depression for a long time and also homeless) and eventual enlightenment is a story unto itself. If you are open to Spiritual awareness I can also recommend a book that was just published. The title is This School Called Planet Earth by Summer Bacon. |
