I've had three children who fell in love with this book around age two. It does a wonderful job of teaching colors, animals and rhyme to toddlers. Aided by Carle's unique illustrations, this book begs to be chanted by the parent who will be reading it for the umpteenth time. ("Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me. Red bird, red bird, what do you see? I see a..." etc.) The cadence and rhythm of the words have fascinated my youngsters as they learn to identify different colored animals populating the pages of the book. Strictly a teaching tool, the book does not have a story per se, but it seems to be just right for the child who is just beginning to discover the larger world.

If you're looking for a fun way to teach your toddler about colors, this is it. Each animal is assigned a unique color-and the combinations get increasingly funny as the book progresses. (My son is usually giggling hysterically by the time we get to "blue horse" or "purple cat.") I swear we must have read this book a dozen times the day it arrived in the mail! A fun book for both parents and kids. Highly recommended! |

If there is any children’s book I never get tired of, it's Brown Bear. My almost 7 year old loved this as a toddler and now reads it to her two year old twin brother and sister - and THEY love it. Its repetition is comforting and familiar, yet never boring. The photos helped her to learn to 'read' it by doing a picture walk long before she could really read other books. The words are so simple she memorized it. And she was so proud of her reading that it inspired her to continue to 'read' this way with other familiar books. VERY highly recommended. |

I taught kindergarten before my daughter was born, and a veteran teacher suggested using this book to help my students learn their colors. I was amazed at how well it worked! The children were so captivated by the flowing, rhyming text that they did not realize they were learning their colors! What's more, they loved the book so much that they wanted to learn how to read, so they could read it by themselves or to younger siblings at home. Even before my daughter was born, I bought a copy of this book for her. We read it almost daily. By the time she was 1 1/2; she could name the animals, recognize colors, and find the teacher at the back of the book! I highly recommend this book to parents and educators. It is a valuable addition to any library! |

The story has a simple theme about colors and animals that children can relate to. The sentence structure is the same and repetitive through out the story, so children can easily read along with you. It is a good story to turn into a flannel board or to act out with your children. It was one of my children's favorite books! It also makes a great baby gift. |

The easy rhythm of this book makes it an easy one to read over and over and over... The illustrations are fantastic. They are creative and encouraged my son to experiment with his finger painting in a new way. This is an excellent introduction to colors and you can use this as a jump off for other senses- we talk about the sounds, the colors and the food the animals in this book eat. It is a lot of fun. I like books that you can use as an introduction to a new idea or to reteach an old one. This book is well worth the money because there are so many things you can teach using this little book. Enjoy. |

This was the first story my daughter learned in Primary/Kindergarten. Each day the kids learned a new color and words for each page of the book. My child really enjoyed bringing home worksheets to show me what was happening in the story. After she learned the story, I bought the hardcover book to replace the well-worn worksheets that were getting very crumpled. This is truly my daughter's favorite book, and she loves reading it to her sister. Her reading skill has surpassed this level, yet she returns to it for the colorful illustrations, and to remember the joy she had in learning to read. This book rates 5 stars and your child will love the melodic tempo to its words as they learn to read. |

I remember loving this book as a child, and reading this to my six-month-old son brought back wonderful memories. Yes, there's a simplistic theme running through the pages, but a young child listens for the repetitive phrase and looks for the big, colorful images. My son gets very excited each time I read the book to him, reaching for each of the animals as the page turns; and as he gets older and can comprehend the pictures better, I'm sure he'll appreciate Martin and Carle's work as much as I did. I highly recommend this delightful book. |

When I was very little I loved this book. The pictures were really adorable, (Eric Carle is the best), and although it was repetitive I still loved it. That remains the same for today. I still love it and cherish this book. A must for all kids and parents. |

This is another time-tested classic by author/illustrator Eric Carle. It opens asking a brown bear what he sees, and he replies, and the next page is the animal that he saw, and he is asked what he sees, and so on and so on. As you might expect from Carle, his simple but wonderful illustrations are a big part of the appeal of this book. Each two-page layout is a colorful animal centered on a white background, and that's it. Kids will effortlessly learn colors and animal names as you read it to them, and maybe a little sequential logic. I'd say it's a great book for ages 1 through 5. (At least, my five-year-old still likes to sit in while I read it to my two-year-old). |
