Alanna, The First Adventure is a great book. It's imaginative, its characters and its world are believable. Alanna has tons of adventures, some small and some that effect a lot of people, but she trys to conquer them all. I also liked this book because I like fantasys, but not fairy-tale-yeah-right -that-will-never-happen- and- people-don't-act-like-that books. This is totally believable, and you can just imagine if our world had magic in the Mid-evil times and were a bit cleaner then this would be what we would have acted like. Tamora Pierce is an really good author. No wonder she wrote three quartets and is working on two more.

I'll tell you what all of the quartets are, even the ones that are not written yet, in the order you should read them in. Song Of The Lioness Quartet; Alanna Immortals Quartet; Daine Protecter Of The Small Quartet; Keladry;only one is written yet. The Circle Of Magic Quartet; Sandry,Tris, Daja, Briar The Circle Opens; I don't know if any books have been written for this yet.

These are all must-reads and if you liked this book, you'll love these.

I first saw this book at a bookstore about a year ago, absorbed in my world of brats and stupidity. It wasn't really the kind of book I read back then (as I said I was a brat) but it looked sort of cool so I picked it up anyway. I read it all in 2 days, i couldn't put it down! Since then I've read all of Tamora Pierce's books, this particular series I've read 5 times! If it weren't for these books, I wouldn't have started to love the Internet (it's a long story) and I wouldn't have done so many things that I've done, like take up fencing, start writing stories, made a website dedicated to Tamora Pierce... I love these books! I cried when I finished the series, then I started reading them again!

If anyone doesn't like these books, they'd better not say it to me! If you don't think you'd like them, think again! Some people who've read this are 8, some are 19, everyone can relate to the characters in their own way.

Since I read these books, I've become Alanna. She's my heroine, she's my best friend, she's everything. I love the way the series starts, I love the way it ends. I fell in love with George as soon as she met him, I was as mad at Jon as Alanna was in the third book. I cried when Liam died. In all, I love these books!

This was such a good book! Alanna has to go to a convent to learn "how to be a lady" and her twin brother has to go learn how to be a knight... but both of them want to go to the place where the other is going. So they switch places. Well, her brother doesn't have to go learn to be a lady... when boys go to the convent they learn to be sorcerers. Alanna loves hunting and doing things like that, and her brother loves sorcery, while socery scares Alanna and her brother hates hunting and that sort of thing. Alanna disguises herself as a boy and says she is Alan. She meets many friends, such as Prince Jonathon, the son of a noble king, and George, the King of Theives. She also meets a few enemies... such as Rolan, a bully at the palace, and Duke Roger, a mysterious uncle of Jonathon who Alan(na) insists is evil. This wonderful and action-packed book will have you laughing, shivering, crying, and rejoicing. It's a must-read for fans of Harry Potter (by J.K. Rowling), Everworld (by K.A. Applegate), Protector of the Small (by Tamora Pierce), and the Immortals (also by Tamora Pierce).

I was first introduced to this book in third grade by someone who was babysitting me. By fourth grade I had read the whole series a number of times. I don't know if I would say this one or the last one was my favorite, but both were great. You can imagine the characters are real, and the same goes to the world they live in. I still love these books, but now I'm in eighth grade. I see all these adults who have read these books, and I think it is great! I can read these over and over and over and not get bored, even though I know exactly what is going to happen and when. I doubt they will ever get boring, thank God. I'll always have a good book to read! I recommend reading the whole series, along with the Wild Magic series, after you read this book, to find out all that happens to Alanna. I havn't read her new series yet, I think I'll wait for it to come out in paper back. I don't know if I'm ready to read something by her that isn't somehow related to the magical world of Tortall and Alanna! Well anyway, this is an excellent book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes reading even a little bit, and especially to girls. I don't think this is really a guy book...

She's brave, she wants to be a knight and she has very strong powers with the Gift. Who is she? Alanna! Alanna must use her skills and test her bravery to save her Prince and and earn her shield. Whether she's fighting a fellow page or ancient monsters, Alanna's got what it takes!
I loved this book, and I recommend it to everyone. If you like this book, be sure to read 'In the Hand of the Goddess', the second book in the 'Song of the Lioness' Quartet.

I love all of Ms. Pierce's books especially 'In the Hand of the Goddess' and In the Relms of the Gods' (The 4th book in the Immortals Quartet)

    Please read all of them!

I first came across this book when I was fourteen or so. I'm 20 now, but this book and all of the others by Tamora Pierce are still among my favorites.

Some people have complained about the romance in the later books being "disgusting", and the characters a little shallow. For those who complained about romance, grow up. Romance is part of life, so deal with it. It's not like the sex is ever explicit, just sort of hinted at. And as for "shallow" characters, when you're trying to fit four years into one book, you can't really go on endlessly about feelings and such, can you?

Besides, they only seem shallow the first time around. I've read the books at least 6 times each, and everything seems much deeper every time. You have to read between the lines for a lot of the character development: how they react to certain situations, and how it would have been different in an earlier book.

Also, the books teach a lot without you realizing it. Things like not giving up, going for your dreams and that just because someone says you can't do something doesn't make it true, for example.

My favorite type of books is fantasy all because of this book. Three years ago, when I was in sixth grade, a friend saw me reading "The Woman who Rides Like a Man" over his shoulder (that's the third book in this series), and the next day he brought this book in to school and told me to read it in study hall. I loved it, and borrowed it and took it home where I finished it that night. I then went out and bought the rest of the series. The book is great, with a little resemblence to "Twelfth Night" (no, if you haven't heard of it, it's not a fantasy book. It's a play by Shakespeare. Sorry.) Alanna and her brother switch places, forcing her to disguise herself as a boy (luckily, her brother, Thom, does not have to disguise himself as a girl.) During the beginning of the book, Alanna tries to reject her powerful magical ability. However, she is forced to use it twice, and realizes that her "Gift" is a blessing from the gods, not a curse from them. Meanwhile, Alanna has to train as a knight. She is shorter than the other boys, and has more trouble, at first. But she works hard to overcome her height disadvantage (not by using magic to make herself grow; she tried that once and got a bad headache), and, while beating all the other boys at knighthood, Alanna still has to deal with issues of womanhood. And what will happen when she becomes a knight? She can't be a "boy" forever!

Alanna was the first science fiction/fantasy book that I ever read, and since then I've read it at least one thousand times! Before I buy a book now, I think of Alanna, and that's how I judge it. If it's not as good as Alanna, then it's not worth buying. The tale was marvelous and well told, and no one but Tamora Pierce could have pulled it off. I've read all of her books, and am eagerly awaiting the next books in the Tortall serries. If you haven't read Pierce's work, then you just haven't experienced the non-stop adventure, romance, and just plain good writing that is expected in a book.

Tamora Pierce is the best author in the universe. Here begins her first book about Alanna, a brave young woman willing to do anything to become a knight.

Ten year old Alanna of Trebond wants to be a knight-but there is one problem. Girls do not get to try for knighthood in Tortall. However, strong-headed Alanna is willing to do anything-including switch places with her twin brother, who wants to be a sorcerer. When Alanna's father, Alan, prepares to send Alanna off to be a lady and her brother, Thom, off to be a knight, they do just that. When Alanna arrives at the palace disguised as a boy, she struggles to prove herself against larger and stronger boys. Luckily, she makes friends with Prince Jonathon and his followers, Gary, Raoul, Alex, and Francis, and the King of Thieves, George. Then Duke Roger, Jonathon's smiling cousin, arrives at the palace to teach magic to those with the Gift. On sight, Alanna does not like this overly-charming man-in fact, she hates him, but she has no idea why. All throughout the book, Alanna has been given visions of a black, shimmering city. When the squires and Alanna take a trip to Persopolis, in the Tortallan desert, Alanna comes face to face with this black city. There is an immortal evil in it, greater and more powerful than time itself. Will Alanna come out of this encounter alive?

The beyond brilliant crafting of this novel, the plot and suspense of it, and the downright honesty of Alanna's character all make this book one of the best you will ever find. I've read this book thirty or more times, and I never get tired of it. Simply spell-binding.

A friend recomended this book to me last year. She told me that it was a really great series and after I read it, I passed it on to someone else. I really liked this book, the first on in the whole set of series. But after I read some of these reviews I found out that if someone really wants to read the rest of the series they would get sort of confused. So, before I start talking about Alanna and all the other great characters in this book, here is a list of the books in this series and the order in which you should read the other books.

Song of the Lioness: 1. Alanna: The First Adventure, 2. In the Hand of the Goddess, 3. The Woman Who Rides Like a Man, 4. Lioness Rampant

The Immortals: 1. Wild Magic, 2. Wolf-Speaker, 3. Emperor Mage, 4. Realms of the Gods

Protector of the Small: 1. First Test, 2. Page, 3. Lady Knight(Not yet Published)

And then there is a set of series that have nothing to do with the ones above, but are by the same author:

    Circle of Magic:

    1. Sandry's Book, 2. Tris's Book, 3. Daja's book, 4. Briar's Book

The Circle Opens: 1. Magic steps

And there you have it, a list of all the books by Tamora Pierce, in the order you should read them. Now, the real book review. Alanna and Thom of Trebond are twins. Their father wants Alanna to go to the convent and Thom to go to the palace to bacome a knight. Neither of them wants to go, Alanna likes fighting and would rather become a knight and Thom wants to learn sorcery. So with the idea of switching places they go to Maude, the village healer. She decides to ask the gods. As they don't object, she helps the twins. Thom forges the letter and Alanna cuts her hair. They look so much like each other that nobody but Maude and Coram(the one who is supposed to take Thom to the palace) would be able to tell the difference. And that's how the set of series begins, with a young girl who has abitions to become a knight. But she has choosen a hard path, girls aren't allowed to become knights. She has to disguise herself and act like a boy. This series(Song of the Lioness) is all about what she has to go through to reache her goal.
