Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a beautifully told tale spoken with the fine voice of its young narrator, Cassie Logan. It is the story of the Logan family and their struggle to maintain both their small piece of land and their dignity in one tumultuous year, two things not permitted a black family in Mississippi in the early decaces of this century. The author brilliantly captures the times of which she writes but, even more important, captures the people she writes about. There are not characters here who can be simply called victims or survivors or fighters or any other single term. These are fully developed personalities, particulary the children, that speak with authentic and complicated voices and spool out a tale that is heart breaking with equal parts despair and hope. A wonderful book for children.

How can one not love a book that is full of great characters, and a literary depiction of a harsh historical period? Mildred Taylor's Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is an excellent book that I have recently been introduced to. The reason I love it so much is because of the way Mildred Taylor describes the relationships between the White and Black races in the book. In a lot of multicultural literature the White race is depicted as the horrible oppressor giving pain to a victimized culture. However, Taylor does something wonderful. She doesn't stick to this idea. Of course she writes about the racist characters and the despicable things they do, but more importantly she gives us characters that are White and truly good, like Mr. Jamison and Jeremy Simms. She also gives us Black characters that are truly good, like the Logan's, and not so nice Black characters. I really enjoyed the chance for a culture, or race, to be both good and bad not just one or the other. In fact I'm planning to place this book in a future lesson plan so the students can discuss the characters and whether they contribute to both the good and bad aspects of this racist period. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about the good that any person can do no matter what race they are. Taylor is a talented writer and I'm excited to read more of her books.

This book is so excellent that I have no idea where to start. I don't think schools adequately teach pupils about segregation-era America and how awful it was. When I was in 4th grade our class read this and most everyone was brought to tears. The story is written so well that you know all the charecters and what they do, but it doesn't bore you with details. This book shows the real side of segregation and how awful it was. I am very surprised it has never been made into a movie.

The book Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry is a very influential book. It made me realize how much prejudice and racism there is in this world. Before I read this book I thought that prejudice would never be in my environment. After I read the book I realized that prejudice and racism is everywhere. This book tells me that all people are victims of racism no matter what race. When you read this book it reminds you that this world isn't perfect.

The book Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry main characters are Cassie; an outspoken, rebellious, ten year old who can be very bossy, Stacy; a caring twelve year old who is a loyal friend, Little Man; a meticulous six year old who is very outspoken, and Christopher John; a positive seven year old who can be very sensitive. The setting takes place in the south where prejudice and racism is a major problem in the area. All four kids realize that there is a lot of prejudice and racism that is in their enviroment. Also they soon find out what its really like to be victims of racism. All four kids learn a vauable lesson.I recommend this book to every one because it can change the way you see life. I'm sure this book will influence you as it influenced me.

Cassie Logan is one of my favorite protagonist in children's fiction. She is feisty, smart, perceptive, and independent. Because she is only 9 in this book, teachers sometime make the mistake of assigning it to younger children who don't understand the "bad grammar" and want to see everyone as either all good or all bad.

This book, I believe, should be read aloud with all the enthusiasm, voice inflection, and drama a teacher can provide. I would not read it to students below 7th grade. My low-level 9th graders are eating it up (of course, when Stacey beats up TJ, and Cassie gets even with Lillian Jean).

The prequels The Friendship, Mississippi Bridge, and Song of the Trees are great for those below 7th grade. The sequels Road to Memphis and Let the Circle Be Unbroken mature along with Cassie and Stacey and contain more sophisticated subjects as Cassie leaves Mississippi to work with civil rights. She gets a love interest. The Land is a longer prequel telling how David Logan came to buy his 400 acres of land and marries Mary Logan, Cassie's mom. I haven't read it but will. I hope MT continues to write about this family becasue I love them all!

I really love this book. It kept my attention through the whole thing. I loved the characters and I felt for them as they suffered. The characters were well formed and it helps show what it might be like to be a black family living in that era and what they had to put up with.

This book is great! I loved it. It is a book to read over and over! I read it in reading class. Teachers every where should read this to their students. I wanted to read on and on. "Roll of Thunder Her my Cry" is a book about a girl (Cassie) who is a strong girl who can stand up for what she believes. Cassie struggles with parts of her life. I would to. This book is good for all moods. Joyful, Down, I could go on and on saying the moods. Could you stand a bus spitting mud at you? I surely could not. What about your brothers friend that caused trouble on you and your Brothers and sisters. If that sounds interesting there is so many more adventures to jump into and they are much more interesting. Enjoy!

Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a realistic fiction novel on racism. The characters are the Logan family, a Negro family with an uncommon gift, 400 acres of land. This family lives in the time of the great depression. The members of this family are 4 kids and their mother and grandmother. Their father works out on the railroad, in another town. Their uncle also lives in another town. I enjoyed this novel and recommend it to high-level readers. When the story got to its best parts, I could not put this down. Also, if you are a person who enjoys cheerful stories and cannot stand stories full of tragedy, this is not the book for you.
Many people treat the family down, and they are in horrible situations often. This is a great book overall.

The Logans have always owned their farm in Mississippi. Hundreds of acres of land. The land that all of the other sharecroppers employers would do anything to get their hands on. And it belongs to the Logans, a black family.

The four Logan children, Stacey, 12, Cassie, 9, Christopher- John, 7, and Little Man, 5, all get mixed up in the prejudice and racism of the deep south during the book. Stacey's friend, TJ, is a source of much trouble for the children, encouraging them to do things they shouldnt and getting them into trouble. He then gets himself into a mess when he begins to hang out with Melvin and R.W Simms, the sons of a very powerful, racist man. The Simm's other son, Jeremy, is very fond of the Logans, however, and tried desperately to become close to them.

All throughout the book, the children find themselves getting into trouble, witnessing horrible acts against their friends and neighbors, and eventually, fearing for their lives.

This book is a good illustration of life as it was in the mid 1930's in the deep south for a black family. Good for historical fiction readers, and very well written.

The best thing about this book was that the narrator, Cassie, is nine, an age where you haven't learned to wear masks and fake things in life, an age where pretense doesn't make much sense. So I didn't doubt the sincerity of her voice as she told about her experiences, in a year when her world comes tumbling down. The book takes place in the South, in the 30's. Slavery has been abolished, but not its cousin - sharecropping. Most of the sharecroppers are black families who plant on white land, then have to pay the white owners more of their earnings than is fair. Cassie's family is lucky, they own their own plot of land, and she has never really thought about being black, or white. Until she is publicly humiliated by a white girl, riders come in the night, looking to hurt and kill blacks accused of crimes they didnt' commit, and a boy named TJ Avery is sentenced to jail for life, accused of murdering a man...

This is one of those books that you wish wasn't dubbed as a childrens' book, so more adults would have the chance to enjoy it.
