Belongs on any shelf of serious reference works for writers, along with The Elements of Style.

"A clear sentence is no accident," booms William Zinsser as I drive to work. "Easy writing makes hard reading, and hard writing makes easy reading." Buy the CD version of this book. The principles of cutting your copy 50% will be drilled into you. Your colleagues will appreciate being able to understand what you are trying to say.
Spend the money on this instead of some horrid trash like "The Secret."

OK. So, I have a degree in English and write for a living. Once again, I experience humility and just when I wanted to feel like I'd accomplished something as an author.
If you plan a career as a writer (and why not) you'll want this book on the right side of your desk. I can't imagine writing without it.
Now for the "The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction" - I disagree. Creative writers, do your first draft with every drop of passion you can muster. Then come back and do your copy editing. Use your head in your next draft and use Zinsser's book as your guide. Make your novel, short story and screen play roll and smooth out. This material will help make your material - "a good read".

On Writing Well is opininated and reactionary to trends in sloppy writing that began appearing decades ago. It's gotten worse for observers of writing , now that even wire stories blunder in the minefield that is the rich English language. Solid advice for those committed to keeping the flame of literacy burning brightly. IF you write well, this book will confirm what you know. If you don't write well, read it, or just start a blog.

William Zinsser's book, On Writing Well, is a book to guide writers on how to write. Zinsser breaks this book up into four main parts; Principles, Methods, Forms, and Attitudes. Zinsser creates subcategories which are subjects that Zinsser feels writers might have trouble with or include different forms of writing. In each chapter there are examples given that shows the right way to do something and the wrong way. For instance he has a chapter called "Bits and Pieces" in which he shows the how to use a verb, adjective, and adverbs. This helps readers to see what common mistakes are and what would be the right way. One thing that I found great about Zinsser was that he made a major point, that when you write you should always be yourself.
Zinnser's language in this book is easy to follow. He doesn't use big words that you can't understand but uses everyday language. It was a easy book to read because you didn't have to think to much, because he explains everything.
The book is overall a good book. I found this book useful because it gave clear explanations and examples of different writings on that subject. In the chapter leadings and endings, he gave examples of different kinds of leadings and endings. Each chapter was helpful in its own way and it made you want to keep reading. I liked this book because it taught me about how to write different forms of writing and the appropriate ways of going about transitions, leading and endings, word usage, clutter, and style.

Of course, the best book ever written on writing style and word usage remains Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style". However, William Zinsser's "On Writing Well" comes in a close second. I have just re-read Zinsser's book for the second time in five years, and it yielded as many rich treasures of writing advice as the first time I looked at it. An indispensable part of every writer's guide - not just for professional writers, but especially for people who only have to write occasionally for their job. The book has plenty of specific guidance for students, educators, government workers, engineers, and everybody who must write to communicate - which means this book is for everybody.

Zinsser has certainly mastered the art of writing well, and therefore can speak on the topic authoritatively. This book is not only written with humor, but with empathy for people who are struggling with the ability to write well. The book certainly demonstrates that this ability is not inherent, but rather it is moreso the ability to work hard, understanding that writing is a process and a very messy one at that. This work can inspire the worst among us to really try at being the very best writer that we potentially can be.

I purchsed this book because I was looking to write better at work (I'm a management consultant). As I began reading, I quickly realized that it was not the "don't put prepositions at the end of a sentence" (although, he actually debunks that somewhat)...Point being, I learned so much more about writing than I ever thought I would, and the benefits accrued immediately -- the following Monday, I could see the results already (and so could my Boss). And the book is a pleasure to read -- it makes you more conscious of how writer's write, making reading other author's less pleasurable now , or at least realizing their flaws more readily. I would highly recommend this book to those who want to be better writers, no matter their ultimate goal, and even those who just love reading, and want to better understand the craft of writing.

I am now reading - "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser - and its delightful. I enjoyed every page of the book - the conversational tone and liberal doses of humorous anecdotes. Initially I was hesitant to buy the book after reading the "2 star" reviews in Amazon. Many of them took offence at the authors tone and his rather forthright views on famous American politicians.
But I found the book enjoyable and every bit of it is relevant and fits together. It is written in a way that behooves us to put the material into action immediately. Now is the tough part of finding my own distinctive style of writing - and doing it well. I am looking forward to the practice and also reading through the book again and digesting the material.
