Dr. Wong's book is aimed at ALL teachers in schools public and private, grades K-12. I've used the book (and the complementary videos) with middle and high school teachers in our PAROCHIAL school. Those teachers who have implemented even a few of the books' suggestions have enjoyed significantly fewer student problems than those who just sail along doing the same, tired old things in the same, tired old ways. As for examples of classroom rules, they're THERE in black and white. I fail to see the problem.
I have been an educator for over 20 years and have been using Dr. Wong's book for the past six. How I wish I'd had it for the fourteen years previous!

This book has shown me, a first-year teacher, the most effective ways to budget my time, energy and resources. There are so many valuable examples and suggestions for behavior management, procedures, setting rules, and overall ways to be a highly successful teacher. This selection goes beyond theory and actually shows the reader a path to take in order to be the kind of teacher that makes a positive impact on the lives of children, parents, and collegues alike. Reading this book decreased my anxiety in the few weeks before my first teaching experience, simply because it helped me realize exactly what I wanted my classroom to become. I highly suggest this to any teacher, new or veteran, as a refresher course in why we have chosen this career and how to be our best! |

The First Days of School are a recommended read for any teacher from beginner to veteran. Harry and Rosemary Wong detail some invaluable techniques for creating lesson plans and reevaluating your teaching technique. Regrettably, the section on classroom management is geared for elementary, and quite possibly middle school, as opposed to high school. Although, they detail how to create a classroom procedures, which is helpful for all ages, I found the techniques they suggest for classroom management (such as ringing a bell, using finger gestures, and hands up to get attention) were too elementray for the high school students. I tried each procedure but found students had a hard time remembering and respecting these concepts. They even threw out my bell one day when I was absent. They found these techniques treated them like they 'were in kindergarten.' There are many invaluable tools in this book for all teachers, I refer back to it constantly, but I do not recommend it to high school teachers exclusively looking for help with classroom management skills. |

As a teacher with a number of years under my belt, I saw bits and pieces of Harry Wong's videos at various teacher workshops. I purchased his book to read over the course of last summer. I implemented several of his ideas into my classroom and I must admit that I am a vastly improved teacher. You do not have to be a first year teacher to benefit from this book. Particularly, Wong's ideas about classroom management have made me see things in the classroom that no methods course has made me see. To top it off, Wong adds his characteristic wit to his wisdom. It has come to my attention that many schools are now using this book as the textbook for introductory teaching courses. It is much better than the textbook I had. A must read for all teachers! |

As a "newer" teacher in middle America, I was anxious to read the Wong's book, especially since it has received rave reviews from every source! And it was a worthwhile purchase and easliy worth the hours I spent reading it. I will refer to you often. However, it is not the *only* book to read on this subject. For a full, well-rounded review of teacher advice, also check out Unauthorized Teacher Survival Guide by Jack Warner and If You Don't Feed the Teachers by Nell Conners. Buy and read all three and you will have a good start on your teacher education after college. |

I highly recommend this book to all students of teacher education programs, preferably before you begin your student teaching. Wong includes fundamentals that while basic, may frequently be overlooked (greeting your students at the door as opposed to staying seated at your desk while they come in, for example). It's hard to walk into your first classroom, and Wong teaches the practical classroom management techniques that most of today's teacher ed programs, in their zeal to be progressive, omit, much to the detriment of the student teachers and ultimately, students.
Although "The First Days of School" is more appropriate for elementary/middle grades, I would recommend it for middle and high school teachers, too. |

I think this book is useful for teachers of all experiences. This book provides teachers with different ideas and strategies on what is effective for starting the school year off. I was very nervous about starting my first full year of teaching and this book equipped me with a lot of helpful ideas, which calmed my anxiety. The book is easy to read and offers suggestions on how to make teaching easier. I liked how it presented different strategies (from classroom management to suggestions on how to allow students to get up out of their seat) from a variety of teachers from different age groups. I was then able to pick and choose strategies I wanted to try in my classroom. My husband was very impressed on how well my first year went, that he began to use some of my ideas that I got from this book for his second year of teaching. |

I'm new to education. This book is very, very well read among educators. Looking at it with my fresh eyes, and with a need to quickly grab useful info for my 1st day at school I thought that:
1) it had very practical advice presented in a quickly read, quickly grasped fashion.
2) I also thought that much of the man's success came from his force of personality as well as from his methods. therefore one's success with his advice would depend on finding a way to fit his suggestions to your own personality. |

A must have for every teacher whether new or experienced. This is the one book that I take home every summer to reread. Buy it for yourself or for your student teacher! |

As a first year teacher there were so many good tips for starting off the year on the right foot. I love the format of this book because it doesn't overwhelm you. There are great insights you don't have to dig for, which is helpful because you already have enough to think about. This is great to have around all year because you can flip through it as a reference so easily.
