Ron Clark is everything a teacher today needs to be, and more!!! Choosing to take the more difficult path and work in a tough, urban district he made magic happen with his students. My favorite part about Clark and this book is that it reminds us teachers that there are three components to learning: knowledge, skills, and values. Too often teachers become overwhelmed with preparing their students for the state exams at the end of the year that they forget the key ingredient of classroom success - good citizenship. As teachers, it is not our job to simply fill our students' minds with as much information as possible. It is our job to prepare them for the next stage of life, both academically and emotionally. |

Every teacher and parent should own a copy of this book; the 55 rules and guidelines outlined in the book are clever, meaningful, and extremely useful for students and adults alike. Throughout the book, Ron Clark weaves tales of his personal experiences, giving purpose to each of his rules. This master storyteller will make you laugh, cry, and become motivated to make a difference in the world. His honesty about the triumphs and challenges of being an educator is refreshing--this book would make a wonderful gift for every teacher and parent you know. After reading this book, you will understand why Mr. Clark is an award-winning educator. You also will be inspired to step forward and do more for children; I know I was. |

This is a simplistic, but powerful guidebook that should be part of the essential library of teachers, student teachers, other educators, and to a lesser degree parents. Mr. Clark explains each one of his rules in a practical way so that they can easily be adapted. Examples add to the overall understanding. Most interesting is that Mr. Clark never loses sight of the goal of teaching: preparing young people to succeed in life by knowing how to interact with others. Though one would think it obvious, try going into a classroom where no one wants to be there for learning; only for socializing or heat in winter. The Essential 55: An Award-winning Educator's Rules for Discovering the Successful Student in Every Child lives up to its title and should be standard fare in every school and part of the criteria of the education major because of its practical nature. Perhaps rule 56 is if you are the new teacher on the block, you will be stuck on the top floor of a six or seven story building with the textbooks in the basement - whoever owns the elevator is your best friend on that first day. |

I have been using this book as a supplement in my classroom this year, and I have seen some really good results. After the first week, I dropped 8 of the rules and ended up to the point where I am only using 40, but the students have enjoyed learning the rules and they are now the most behaved class I have taught. |

Sometimes poignant, often funny, always insightful, Ron Clark's The Essential 55 is a book I wish I had read before student teaching. Clark's rules may boil down to the Golden Rule, but he spells them out in a practical way and illustrates them with anecdotes that spice the account and keep you reading.
He explains each rule with personal background, reason, and a history of successes and the failures that led to the rule. Many of these rules are ones that parents should be teaching their children, such as table manners, saying thank you, washing their hands after using the rest room, but others give young people definite ways to build character, such as surprising others with acts of kindness.
Clark comes across as a dynamic and dedicated teacher. This book will help teachers improve their performance and help parents develop character in their kids. It should be required reading for all prospective teachers. We are including this on our Christmas list for my dad who is a school board member, and my sons who are future parents. As a former homeschooler, I recommend this to other homeschoolers. |

What a fabulous book! I read it over the weekend and gave it to my daughter. Ron Clark's rules for guiding kids in the classroom and daily life is a godsend for parents, teachers and students. I also recommend a book written by Dr. Rosalene Glickman, a teacher too, called Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self. Optimal Thinking shows all of us how simple it is to bring our best self to every situation and make the most of it. Both of these books are top-notch. |

No book I read or lessons I learned in college helped prepare me for what the classroom was going to be like. If I had this book back then, I know my first year would not have been so difficult. I have now learned many of the things Mr. Clark writes of, but the way he looks at situations and the creative advice he has for dealing with students is priceless. He basically lists his 55 rules and then he explains why each one is important, how to teach it to kids and he offers great stories of his time in the classroom to go along with most rules. It was a quick read and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I have been in the classroom 5 years, but this coming year I will be taking a new perspective...and 55 essentials...along with me. |

This book provides 55 practical strategies for students to be successful in and out of school. Ron Clark teaches etiquette, self-respect and consideration for others. Mr. Clark is a brilliant teacher who has his heart and mind in the right place. I also highly recommend Optimal Thinking: How to be Your Best Self, by Dr. Rosalene Glickman. Optimal Thinking is taught in schools throughout the world to empower students to be their best, emotionally self-reliant, optimize situations and achieve their goals. These books are first-rate. |

I highly recommend this book to both new teachers entering the workforce, and to those of us who have been around for a while. With wit and insight, Ron Clark reminds us that if we really want to motivate the students to learn, we have to connect with them, get them to respect us, and excite them. How do we do this? By modeling the exact behavior we expect, lots of praise and immediate consequences. Many of the rules are simply good manners, some deal with maintaining order in the classroom. Along with each rule, he includes anecdotes from his own experience- often funny, sometimes poignant. The ideas Mr. Clark puts forth are sound and DO work! Well done Mr. Clark- May you continue to touch the lives of children and teachers for many years to come! |

This book has completely changed the way I view my classroom and the way I teach and relate to my students. I felt like Mr. Clark was speaking directly to me as he told his heart warming stories and shared his creative tips for getting the most out of all children. I could see the faces of my "hard to reach" students as he told his stories, and I only wish I could turn back time and handle situations the way Mr. Clark did. He isn't what I would call a convential teacher, and some of his strategies seem different, but they work. He got results from his students, and as I have used his 55 rules this year, I have gotten the same types of results with mine.
On a final note, as you read this book, you may not agree with absolutely everything he says, but he has energy, passion, creativity and AMAZING ideas that work. What he brings to the table is different and new, and it deserves a look from everyone in education and everyone who works with children, even parents. Bravo to Mr. Clark for being a champion of children!! |
