This new version of the Star Trek Encyclopedia is a reissue of the 1997 edition, plus a 128-page supplement of additional material that updates Deep Space Nine to the end of its run and Voyager to midway through season five. It also covers the movie Star Trek: Insurrection.

The supplement is as meticulously detailed as the rest of the volume, listing such fascinating trivia as chadre kab (Seven of Nine's first meal), 'Kahless and Lukara' (a Klingon opera), and voraxna (a Cardassian poison), as well as all the new characters and species. Appendices include illustrations of starships, cast and crew listings, a historical timeline, and a bibliography. All photographs and illustrations (except for a few historical shots) are in color.

The encyclopedia was devised in part to help production staff on the various Star Trek TV series to keep up with the ever-increasing level of detail generated by over 30 years of creative effort. It is an excellent reference volume and, whether you want to settle an argument or write a novel, this book will answer your questions. But beware: the extensive cross-referencing leads to curious time-distortion effects, in which the unwary reader, dipping in to settle a single query, encounters an irresistible urge to browse further, during which hours of normal time can pass in the wink of an eye.

Considering the constraints on time needed for research, art development, publishing and distribution, this is simply the most up-to-date reference available. Not intended solely for the hard-core trekkie/trekker, but a volume that the casual watcher will find illuminating and humorous. From the un-aired pilot film to the early years of Voyager, this is not simply a reference tome, but a most comprehensive book to be enjoyed. Settle long-standing trivia questions, find out other interesting facts about your favorite bridge-crew member, whatever you want, it's here! I heartily endorse this book, and look forward to the next one!!

This book is one of the best I've ever read on Star Trek. While I use it to look up specific things once in a while, I mainly use it as a good book to browse through at any time. Whenever I open it, I find out something that new that I didn't know before, or something old that is just as informative to read a second or even a third time. It gives a detailed biography of all the different main characters, from Captain Picard to Commander Riker, Lt. Cmdr. Data, Lt. Cmdr. Worf, Counselor Deanna Troi, Geordi LaForge, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Ensign Wesley Crusher, Chief Miles O'Brian, Captain Sisko, Lt. Cmdr. Jadzia Dax, Major Kyra Narys, Security Chief Odo, Dr. Julian Bashir, Captain Janeway, Commander Chakotay, Seven of Nine, and much more! Besides this, it lists detailed descriptions and diagrams of the main ships, and gives at least mention of almost every kind of ship that is mentioned on Star Trek at any time.

There are several charts and tables that make up detailed lists of all known kinds of races/life forms that exist, all known planets, all known names of Starships, all known planet names, and more. Basically, if it was mentioned in any episode of any of the Star Trek series, you will probably find it somewhere in this book, and the best part is that it's all in alphabetical order, organized just like an Encyclopedia of the 20th century! I definately recommend it to any Trekkie, die-hard or not! This book deserves a 6-star rating, it is unlucky that 5 is the maximum!

This book is a must have for all "Trekkies." This book has enough information to entertain for hours. It'll make you become an expert in the Star Trek Universe. It covers all 35 years of Star Trek. And in October, when the paperback vrsion comes out, the encylopedia will probably feature information from the last movie: Star Trek: Insurrection. THIS IS A MUST HAVE BOOK. When reading this book and absorbing the knoweldge, it's as if your a part of the Star Trek staff. If you ever wanted to write a Star Trek episode, well with this book, now you have your chance.

This book will really take you to worlds where no man has gone before because with the Star Trek: Encylopedia, it's like a never ending rollar coaster ride.

The Star Trek Encyclopedia is an exellent source of information for Star Trek fans, especially those who are die-hard. I liked the book because it has very good information on ships, characters, and more. The book also has information on bloopers and other parts that actors played. For example, the book pointed out that In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Khan said he remembered Chekov from "Space Seed", unfortunatly this is impossible because Chekov's character was not yet created.

The is book is also good to get information on broad subjects, like ship classes and planets etc. For example, the book has lists of all the named ships, their classes, and what they did in relevance to Star Trek.

The book doesn't tell info on the books, but it is good in all other areas, episodes included. I would recommend this book to all Trek fans who ever wanted a place to look something up.

This book is much better than any other Star Trek info book I've ever seen, it also comes with free blueprints of the USS Enterprise D, so its a must.

If you consider yourself a Trekkie or just someone who is truely intersted in Star Trek this Encyclopedia is a must buy period. It has insight to every facet of the Series. From the Original to Voyager you'll know details to everything. You'll won't be able to just glance through it once.I consider myself a huge Trekkie and like to think I know alot about the Shows, but I'll find myself amazed when I discover details about a certain charecter of Episodes I've forgotten or never knew exsisted.Especially interesting is the Timeline parts of the book,The breakdowns of Ship commisions and Designs, information about Actors,Cuisine, backstories of Charecters. You name it and they have everything about it...well almost everything.

You have to realize this fact before buying this Encyclopedia is that it was made in 1999.It's been 9 Years.Alot of History has happened in Star Trek since then and if you don't realize this now, you'll be disapointed to discover that to information about Deep Space Nine's last Season, the last 2 Seasons of Voyager,The whole of Enterprise and Star Trek Nemesis. All of this information is non-exsistant.And just imagine the frustration of people who actually owned this book through the years and reread it wishing it had all this wealth of new information.I honestly can't comprehend why Pocket Books would not release the Book with all of this missing information availible.Or make a CD-Rom of it.

This might sound like I'm ragging on the Book, but that would be impossible to do.Wiether or not this info is in this paticular Book doesn't really matter, because it extensively covers in scrutinizing detail of all the Series up to Deep Space Nine Last Season,Voyager's last 2 Seasons, the whole of Enterprise and Star Trek Nemesis. And believe me you'll be more than satisfied with that alone.

So,most definately buy this now and enjoy it and you will. But just realize it's outdated and once you do that then you can truely enjoy this Encyclopedia the way the Publisher intended you enjoy it:with wonderment and fun.

This is probably the most wide-spread book about Star Trek, and I agree that it's the most important one too. It is almost superfluous to review such a common book. The Encyclopedia is Star Trek, it shows everything the show is about on the fictional level.

Mike Okuda, Paramount's "canon-keeper" was very diligent and very careful in compiling all the facts from 35 years of Star Trek on screen in one book. Considering this enormous work and the fact that the Okudas have other things to do than writing we may easily forgive occasional errors like mislabeled images or misread registries of starships. Moreover, the Encyclopedia is the one and only reference book that strictly adheres to the facts established on screen, and in this respect it is more comprehensive and more detailed than every such attempt by fans. This is why I always defend it against fans who take the (necessary) nitpicking too far and claim they would do everything better. I have no objections when Okuda supplements the 99% of hard canon evidence with 1% of good speculation.

What I like about the Encyclopedia is that, besides the fictional content, it has a good deal of background information too. After all, it is always nice to learn how something was created or if a name is a "tip of the hat" to someone or something in the real world. I'm not quite content with the images many of which should be much larger (which is a matter of the costs, of course). There are also many redundant illustrations, such as I would rather like one big image of the Excelsior class than a small one for each single ship of the class.

Anyway, the Encyclopedia is a must-have for any fan who doesn't like to deperately search for every bit of information in the internet. As far as I can tell, much of the content of the Encyclopedia is in no form available in the web.

I'm a builder on an online rpg based on Star Trek (all movies and series) and one of the imm's on the game suggested this book as a reference. Right away I jumped on here to order it and all I can say is that of any reference book I've ever read on any subject - this is by far the best.

Written in plain english, which is great for someone who is not a die-hard Trekkie, I was able to not only find the information I was looking for, but learn many new things about Star Trek and it's intracacies (sorry bout the spelling), that have made it the legend that it is.

Hats off to Michael and Denise Okuda, and Doug Drexler for creating such a helpful tool.

This is Encyclopedia is a must have for any fan. It has information that will take hours to read but the time will fly and you won't even realize how much time you've spent reading it! There are illustrations and TV pictures for some of the topics. From people, to places, to things, this book pretty much has it all.

You will enjoy the book as one topic makes you look at another and another. The only down side to this book is that it was made in '99 so things mentioned at the end of VOY and all of ENT aren't included. With minor things missing, this is still worth getting. Hours of info that you will enjoy reading!
