Ages 5-10. Like other books in Marzollo's I Spy series, this one features a simple rhyming text and crystal-clear color photographs of common objects. Readers will have to be eagle-eyed (not to mention diligent) to locate the bright toys, games, party favors, sports equipment, and other childhood items that hide in blue shadows, on a shell-filled beach, behind keyholes, and in a whimsical nursery painting. Filled with props, the diverse and imaginative "sets" (their construction is explained in a note) should inspire kids to invent their own mysteries and rhymes. Librarians should be forewarned that patrons may be tempted to mark up the pages, but this is still a book to recommend to young detectives sick of looking for that little guy in the red-and-white stripped shirt and the red hat. Careful with the purchase of this book. It is an excellent "I Spy" in the series. However, the inside pages are the same as another; only the front cover is different. If you're adding to a collection be sure to view inside pages. |

This is a wonderful series, my family has each book and we get so much enjoyment. The I spy Mystery I really feel has some great creative photography. I thought some of the pictures may be scary for the young but that wasn't so. They seem to be amazed with the photo that is like peeking though a keyhole and especially the pages with all the marbles. The extra credit questions in the back of this one are really a lot of fun. You can't go wrong with this book and is great for all ages! |

This is one of my favorite I Spy books because it has a lot of mystery themed riddles. As a sleuth, you will need to find certain things at the end of the riddle, such as something fancy, something missing from another page, or even the criminal responsible for this crime.
Please note: There are additional riddles at the end of the book, including mystery riddles, such as finding the gems and jewels in a box, or finding the missing pieces of a charm necklace.
Overall, 5 Stars. If you like solving mysteries, be sure to get this book! |

My 5 year-old godson is absolutely enchanted by this book. It is his absolute favorite and the first thing wants when he comes over. It has been a source of countless evenings of entertainment for our family. The layout and photography of each page is very creative. This book is one that can be enjoyed by kids of all ages, over and over again! |

The I Spy books are a play on the children's game of "I Spy" a game I played often during long car trips except that each book is themed. I Spy Mystery centers around buried treasure, a sunken ship and some other shenanigans. Most of the items photographed are miniatures and toys though what is often being sought in the riddles isn't as obvious as the photograph would first imply. The photographs themselves are deceptively simplistic. A photograph of a green house would appear to be nothing but flowers but may in fact hide things like anchors or race cars.
I Spy Mystery seems to be a tougher book than I Spy Spooky Night. I've read the book now twice and still haven't found all the mentioned items! |
