For those trying to make their Web sites profitable in the lean years, Internet marketing sage Seth Godin, author of Unleashing the Ideavirus, has written a practical guide to making sites more attractive to browsers. The Big Red Fez: How to Make Any Web Site Better offers simple but frequently overlooked design tips (avoid inefficient pull-down menus, don't ask for the same information twice) that will keep impatient users from ditching your site before they buy whatever it is you're selling. Godin's primary mantra is to limit information on each page and offer clear incentives for clicking to the next screen. Each of his concise points is illustrated with an image from an actual Web site, making the book itself a model of simplicity that will be appreciated by busy entrepreneurs and Web designers.

While the average computer book is as thick as the unabridged telephone directory to China, Godin's new Web marketing manual is so slender you'll actually want to read it. Geared primarily toward those designing, building, or owning retail Web sites, the text encourages us to picture the would-be shopper as a monkey (wearing a red fez) whose attention will wander if he can't instantly find a "banana": a simple objective on each page that leads to a reward. (The author insists the comparison is not demeaning, saying we're all monkeys once in a while.) Though he may be part of the insidious gang that seeks the best way to part us from our hard-earned cash, he is also a de facto consumer advocate; it turns out that what we find most annoying in the online world - Flash sites, crappy search engines, Spam--are the very things that cut into revenue. Imagine! After this brisk and humorous read, even a monkey would agree that this is how business ought to be done. Keir Graff

Books on websites are usually old before they come out.

    Not this one.

Seth has recorded the timeless thinking behind websites. The thinking that will never change and will help you create brilliant stuff.

No other book does this, not this way, not this sharp, short and bold.

It's a short book, but longer isn't needed. You get it at the first pages. The rest is to drill in into your system.

Brilliant book. Brilliant author by the way (check out his video's that roam around on the web and you'll know this book is great).

If you're looking to do business on the internet this book will prove invaluable, its a manual how to make a internet business succeed, without it so many important factors can be overlooked making the end result i.e. your profits sink to the bottom...a must read for the serious entrepreneur who wants to make serious money on the net.

The trouble with marketing books and internet based ones in paricular is they give you so many "musts", that by the time you reach the end, you've forgotten the first points that were made and you forget the basic stuff!

Admittedly, Seth Godin is one of my business heroes, but this has to be worth sending $2.70 of anyone's money to charity!

One learns best by seeing, not reading. Every point he makes is illustrated with a real-world example taken straight off the Web. Godin pulls no punches and slates some very well-known big names - but, it has to be said, all is reasoned and fair comment. There are accolades too, showing in clear practical steps how to make any commericial Web site better. Don't mess about - just buy it. $2.70? No brainer!

If you're looking for a short, simple, straightforward book then this is the one. Filled with great info on where most of us make mistake when building a website, and what we can do about it! If you've read Permission Marketing and Idea Virus then this is a great follow-up book. I read it in one sitting. Get this book fast.... before your competition does!

The problem with most books on any technical or business subject is that the conversation generally runs around the case study instead of simply stating what is wrong, and what should be done right. What I love about this book is that it gets right to the point, sharing Godin's thoughts on what works, what doesn't, and why.

I dog-earned about a dozen pages where I can apply some of his points to my current projects or clients. What I got out of this book was 1) keep it simple, 2) if you can't make your point in a few words, rethink what you're saying, and most importantly 3) remember that it's not about you -- it's about your customer.
