We loved it! The best 269 page book about dating disasters we've read this year!
  • Comedian Rocky LaPorte, USA   <2008-04-10 00:00>

Loved it! Ian's book is very insightful and learned a lot from it, mostly that women are crazy and Ian's a perv.
  • Mystery Method Forum, USA   <2008-04-10 00:00>

Nothing short of hilarious. (on the advice) AWESOME stuff!

Go to the bookstore and you'll see a bunch of books on sex, a few books filled with advice for men on how to score beautiful women, and oh... ten thousand books filled with advice for women on dating.

The problem? They're all separate. Why? Don't this things need to go together to work? What good is knowing everything about sex if you can't get a date? How can you get a date if the book telling you to do "this and that" is in direct conflict with the book telling your date to do something else?

I always wanted to tell my dating failures onstage because they are very funny and informative. They are too long, though, to work in a standup routine, so I'm glad I was able to put them in a book.

Ever feel like God is against you when it comes to dating, sex and one-night stands? She is.

Comedian Ian Coburn relives his funniest dating failures in the best dating advice book geared toward both sexes. While Ian shares the lessons he learned from his embarrassing escapades in his hilarious standup fashion, he tackles some of the biggest questions men and women have about each other: Do guys know they favor one breast over the other? Why do women like jerks? Why don't guys call? Why don't women call back? What's the best way to approach a woman at a bar? Why are men so bad at reading signals? He also admits that it's harder to be a woman than a man and tells why.

Whether the story is about the time he was fooling around in his mom's car while he was supposed to be bringing Drew Carey offstage or how he graduated college still a virgin; or the time Jenny Jones grabbed his butt and hit on him or his downward spiral to behaving like a jerk culminating in a night on the town with Damon Wayans, it's all here--openly honest and hilarious--including Larry the Cable Guy's real name and what Nikki Cox is like in person. So sit back, relax, get ready to laugh and find out why God is a Woman.

Great stories, great insight into the life of a comedian. It shows how the job and the life become one and the same. I find it especially insightful because it gives you the view point of a comedian who is not a celebrity. All the other books on comedy are by guys like Rickles and Allen but this is by a guy who still works the circuit and that makes it even more interesting and original. No other book on stand-up comedy has that distinction. For those reading it as a dating advice book, look at it like the independent film of its genre. Instead of having lots of marketing and a stupid title like Get Her Into Bed or Get Laid Now, it has a title and cover that enable you to read it on a bus. It doesn't cater to what big publishers want with what amounts to totally worthless advice. The stories are really the best part of the advice. The tips at the end, really just a review of the story they follow, are quite good and insightful. It differs from all the others by being much funnier than tucker max, wiser than mystery or neil strauss, the author actually likes women and no one is trying to sell you anything. Also suggested: Leading with My Chin and Steve Martin's new book, which comes out tomorrow. I know already it will be great and that these three are the best books out there on stand-up comedy. Great stuff.

11.20 UPDATE I only truly came to appreciate just how good this book is today. I just finished Steve Martin's book, of whom I'm a big fan, and I liked this one more, which is saying alot. The author does a fantastic job of interweaving the stories of comedy with those of his life, like when his mom drives him to a comedy show, where he avoids her because Drew Carey is the headliner and he swears alot and his mom doesn't like swearing, so Ian wanders off and ends up in his mom's car with a girl while he's supposed to be bringing Drew offstage. His life seems more interwoven with comedy than any comedians' book I've ever read and I've read them all. I think other comedians must have the same experiences but their books, which are far less funny, seem to be arranged like "here's what was going on in my life, here's what was going on in my comedy life." They don't capture the essence like this work does and I wonder if that is because they are all by big publishers and this book is by a small publisher, again like an independent film. There are no photographs in this book, no thick paper with large spaces between lines and that all adds to it; it makes it standout even more as a different, innovative work of comedy. This book is the closest you can come to experiencing being a comedian without getting onstage yourself.
