This is a fabulous book. Beautifully written prose, with each word obviously carefully chosen. Stunning and imaginative illustrations match the meticulously written story. I am a school librarian and the children absolutely love this book and want to hear it and look at the illustrations again and again, each time discovering something special they missed the last time around. Highly recommended and a book that can be enjoyed on many levels. |

I finally found a perfect book for young children... in every sense of the word. Outstanding choice of words, lyrical rhythm, awesome art, original concept, and interesting, lovable characters. |

Brian Lies delivers a book on an unusual topic, sure to delight, bats enjoying a beach party. Even among children's books, few work as well as this, with lovely painted pictures filled with humor and rhyming poetry. Increasingly, authors of children's books are returning to the days of recognizing the intelligence of their audience, including their appreciation of artful language. Any parents who have children that love books will surely find that they love this fine work. |

This book is great. I even enjoyed it. The story is written in verse so it is easier to read aloud-at least for me. The artwork is stunning and so cute. The way Lies personifies the bats while simply substituting some small details such as the "salted skeeters", "moon-tan lotion", and "sand caves" is so fun. This book is on par with classics such as Snow and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. |

Every child who has played at the beach or, for that matter, has always dreamed of going to the beach will simply love this book. The illustrations are charming and the writing is witty. Who can resist these charming little bats?! |

This wonderful, charming, witty book is as much a pleasure to recite as it is to look at. The text is clever and inventive; the illustrations spark the imagination. Lies uses a breathtaking palette of dark, nighttime colors for the beginning of the book-but then includes a few scenes in starkly different (and funny) settings. His characters and details are highly engaging and can be enjoyed over and over again-as they surely will be when they become a bedtime or storytime favorite. |

This book feels like an old favorite on the first reading. My 4-year-old and 6-year-old (and their parent and grandparents) love the clever rhymes and the beautifully-drawn, detailed pictures-our favorite is the bat shivering in the cold water. Destined to become a frequent gift from our family, along with The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza by Philomen Sturges. |

This fanciful tale of a vacation night for bats is full of fun. There are lots of engaging pictures that invite discussion about what people do at the beach. The author is developing a web site for the book, which provides interesting enrichment activities. The experience helps create a new image for these long maligned creatures. You almost want to hug one. Almost. I have added several free activities about the book to my web site. |

The first thing that grabs you about this book is the fabulous illustrations and how they capture the effect of the moonlight for example as seen through the water and the bat's wings. It is so easy to relate to this story as you see the things people do at the beach being done by bats but in the way bats behave. A great way to learn about bats and enjoy the cross over familiarity to our world; delights and makes you laugh. Wonderful read and great eye candy! I bought many to give to each of the little one's in my family and to my friend's kids. |
