  • Thomas J. Donohue (President and CEO, United States Chamber of Commerce) (MSL quote), USA   <2006-12-27 00:00>

The Black Book of Outsourcing moves beyond the rhetoric and offers specific strategies for those choosing to outsource and for those whose careers have been impacted by outsourcing. Outsourcing is a reality. This book shows companies and workers alike how to turn it into an opportunity.
  • Robert Reich (Former U.S. Secretary of Labor, Clinton Administration) (MSL quote), USA   <2006-12-27 00:00>

This book will help you gain an understanding that in the new global, high-tech economy, there's no cruising altitude.
  • Ward Holland (VP, Strategic Initiatives and Corporate Development, Wachovia University) (MSL quote), USA   <2006-12-27 00:00>

This is, without question, the most comprehensive publication on outsourcing. It's destined to become the most regarded source of essential outsourcing information and practice. The Black Book of Outsourcing is the most important outsourcing investment you can make.
  • Joseph P. Quinlan (Chief Global Economist, The Johns Hopkins University) (MSL quote), USA   <2006-12-27 00:00>

An exhaustive, in-depth look at one of the most pressing competitive issues of our time. Required reading for all executives who hope to survive in the global economy.
  • William Brooks (MSL quote), USA   <2006-12-27 00:00>

To improve productivity enough to compete with lower-cost offshore competitors, most North American and Western European knowledge-based companies need to do business process reengineering (good news for IBM, which assists companies in this area all the time).

The objective is not to make incremental improvements, but rather to improve productivity by a factor of ten.

Brown & Wilson, among other superb lessons for business management, discuss suggestions for survival from a company perspective, focusing on what the corporation can expect to gain and what to watch out for when implementing their set of best outsourcing practices and strategies.

Some other advice they offer for companies considering outsourcing:

    * Don't outsource core competencies.

    * Don't outsource what you can't manage in-house.

    * Start small with a pilot project.

    * Measure your expectations with service level agreements.

    * Investigate "bundling" of Outsourcing services.

    * Train or acquire out-of-house an Outsourcing Governance or Management team who can keep outsourcing contracts and deliverables on target.

    * Distribute contracts among more than one vendor.

Personally, I plan to leverage this advice within my department and also share it with my clients. I didn't expect this type of invaluable advice from a single book. Brown & Wilson did a very fine job at clarifying outsourcing from a sensible, objective perspective. I highly recommend you investigate it when evaluating or implementing outsourcing projects. It will save you much time and money.

Although being transferred to an outsourcing company is never something you instigate yourself, it can represent a great career opportunity. For a start, your role is elevated from just being one of several back-office functions to being the sole focus of the organization. The outsourcer needs expertise in your discipline to provide its service to clients. Without it, it has no business.

There is also likely to be greater scope for recognition and reward, because the outsourcer will be keen to retain your specialist knowledge, and will also ensure there is a structured promotion path. Embracing the opportunities afforded by being outsourced will help you broaden your experience and develop highly specialized skills.

The Black Book of Outsourcing is the place to start. Overshadowed by vendor and buyer issues in the general market, this book has been unvalued in the area of how much it can contribute to the individual worker. If your being absorbed by an outsourcing firm, being displaced by outsourcing, or want to find a career opportunity in outsourcing, this is the authoritative manual whether you are in the US, UK or offshore.

Ensuring that you understand the outsourcer and how it works is key to understanding how the move is going to affect you and what steps you should take. Employees who are quick to understand and embrace the outsourcer's culture and ways of working will be better placed to reap the rewards of this experience.

Many people who have been outsourced say that it can be a bumpy and often stressful ride. During difficult times, it is easy to view the past with rose-tinted glasses and feel negative about future changes. Try to remain objective and accept that there will be a settling-in period. Express any concerns you have to your line manager, especially if the outsourcer isn't delivering on its promises. If the situation doesn't improve, review your position and find an employer that can help to realize your career aims.

Where is the best source of information for people being affected by outsourcing or seeking new career opportunities in outsourcing? The Black Book of Outsourcing.
  • An American reader (MSL quote), USA   <2006-12-27 00:00>

I am a sucker for reference books. A good reference book invites browsing by the hour and ends up being tattered from frequent handling, littered with Post-It Notes®, underlined and hi-lighted. When I saw this one, I had to have it and its full of highlighting and post-its! Brown & Wilson are determined to make outsourcing a rousing success for the business, the economy and the individual worker. Economists argue that outsourcing is a major factor in corporate America's ability to remain profitable. Companies that announce outsourcing plans routinely see their share prices rise. CEOs of such companies get paid more. Most of us have a lot to learn on the subject. Because we lack the complete understanding of outsourcing, half of all outsourcing contracts signed during the past three years will fail to meet expectations, say the authors of The Black Book of Outsourcing. Those failures can be traced to three problems: miscommunication, governance failure and poor coordination.

The book provides a step-by- step process to prevent these problems, advice that includes creating a well-aligned sourcing strategy, evaluating and selecting service providers, and methods for long-term management and governance. The Black Book of Outsourcing is chock-full of helpful charts and lists, among them what is the best governance structure and a sample outsourcing management dashboard. The detailed checklists, directories and instructions for success are great weapons for any executive or manager being pressured into outsourcing… Make a personal chart of these pages and place them on your office wall. The Black Book of Outsourcing is the practical guide to creating a foundation for sourcing success. And given the potential outsourcing failure rates cited in this book, business leaders and manager can use all the help they can get. On the whole an excellent read and a book that I read very enthusiastically. It's going to be your outsourcing reference manual for decades to come.
  • Jack Ingram (MSL quote), USA   <2006-12-27 00:00>

This outsourcing book is by far the best on the shelf. The other outsourcing books I've read (as a corporate trainer, I've read over a dozen) focus on the history of outsourcing, the effects of outsourcing and the mundane aspects of the subject.

The Black Book of Outsourcing is a comprehensive and dynamic collection of hard to find information, resources and advice:

Section One - is for Managers and Workers either affected by outsourcing or wanting to improve their performance by understanding the HOW-TO of outsourcing.

Section Two - uniquely focuses on job seekers, career changers, and new grads - all of who are looking for the hottest careers and how to qualify for them. No just what its all about but how to make it work for your career and job search.

Section Three - provides executives, entrepreneurs and business owners with the knowledge of how to start an outsourcing firm, how to use outsourcing to ramp up fast profits in a start up, and how to reinforce cash into your business or company.

The wide range of subject matter, directories (for instance: outsourcing vendors), resources, anecdotals, in-depth How-To and step-by-step directions make this the best outsourcing book available. Its also extremely current and has reliable trusted date which we use. The manuals are part of our workers training and I often see the books dog-earred and post-it noted on our staffs desk. You'll use it for years to come. Trust me - its a great value of exceptional advice.

I had recently caught the authors of this book interviewed on ABC. The "Black Book" part of the title was chosen by the publishers as a connotation of a "prospectus" being referred to commonly in financial circles as a "black book" review. Brown and Wilson (the authors) stated that some readers unfamiliar with such terminology have confused the perception that this is a "little black book" of secrets or a "black book of magic"!!! Although it is consistent with a prospectus of outsourcing, I am sure you will also find some new material, particularly if you are unfamiliar with best outsourcing practices.

Purchasing this book for several of my clients (I sell Outsourcing Services around the globe), this book is perfect to explain to all levels of the organization/company exactly how to begin and operate with outsourced processes. Many folks do not know where to start but are under the gun by their bosses or shareholders to "outsource something now"!!! Outsourcing is a part of business that will not change except to get to be a bigger and more important business segment. The book is also a great reference for people re-negotiating standing outsourcing deals and those managing the best they can.

"The Black Book of Outsourcing" is a great resource in one volume. As far as I am concerned, fleeting originality is on the front page of the newspaper. Business Book Classics have information that is consistent and is re-useable over and over. This book is in the league of classic book shelf resources.

Regarding the misspells mentioned by another reviewer, I didn't pick that any errors in spelling through the book...but the publisher, Wiley & Sons, is known for editting mistakes, so I am sure its possible. They usually change them when the book goes into paperback version.
  • Michael Smith (MSL quote), USA   <2006-12-27 00:00>

Everyone's career path will be touched, affected or interrupted by outsourcing. The top performers who are in touch with what is changing in the workplace will survive because of this book.

As a career counselor to several downsized US colleagues, I have recommended this book as a way to get back on track. I particularly encourage new grads, executives and those whose positions were eliminated by outsourcing to get this book and closely apply the principles they still are not teaching in Business Schools.

The challenges are many but the nuts and bolts of being an outsourcing expert are not within your grasp if you comprehend the big picture, and then learn to use the concepts of outsourcing as they apply to your field of expertise.

Before you know you it, if you push yourself to learn what so many are still complaining about outsourcing, you'll be in the cat bird's seat for the many new US and UK career paths opening up as you read this. Don't let the opportunities pass you by. This book is a winner.
