This book is a must read for anyone new to the business world. It drills on the basic question of what is the goal of an organization or an enterprise. Then taking some case study from the supply chain world it drills down into more subtle questions to find bottlenecks in an organization, suggest improvements, drive efficiences etc.
Overall a simple, easy to read material especially for new comers in the business world. Since most cases are cited from the supply chain it might not suit that well to high paced software or internet world. However the fundamental concepts show cased here do apply in general to broad industries. |

I'm always searching for ideas that discuss how people solve common problems. This book, while perhaps targeting manufacturing spaces, has application in life - software inclusive.
Written in the form of a novel… I couldn't put the book down. There were examples within examples… parallel concurrent story lines… golden key points that were first implied, then stated, then listed with supported logic.
I'll have to read it multiple more times for a) a refresher, and b) to pick up and apply things I overlooked the previous time(s).
Flow, constraints, waste, cost structures, team utilization, work prioritization, etc. I easily find parallels between this material and Agile software development ideology. Cross-pollination between industries and ideas. Software heads should have to read this book and translate the fundamentals across to the software solution delivery streams. While they don't match up 1:1… they share commonalities brought to light by this book.

First the good news! The author makes a dry subject otherwise, very interesting and fun to read! It's not often someone other than Eliyahu Goldratt that can make a production management/operations management subject this readable!
However, the principles outlined here are "necessary but not sufficient" (which is ironically the title of one of the author's other books!). The author tells the story about a Plant Manager struggling with managing the different demands on his production capacity and people arising from improper metrics and management. He slowly starts using many of the principles outlined by Eliyahu Goldratt's work on "Theory of Constraints" (TOC) to resolve many of the issues and makes his plant perform immensely better.
The Toyota Production System seems to fix many of the problems outlined in this book as well as others not discussed in this book in a more comprehensive and elegant way - by using "pull" method of planning production (making only those parts that are consumed needed by the process step after you), production leveling (mixing products so that you avoid inventory), multi-skilling of people so that others can fill in case someone is absent or sick, Just-in-Time and in general, a more rational, reasoned and complete approach to manufacturing! |

Mr. Goldratt hit a strong, stand-up double with this business novel. He thoroughly exposes his Theory of Constraints, which is a valid consideration for just about all of life's interrelationships and business activities.
That being said, the story could have been told using only about two-thirds of the pages that Goldratt devoted to the tale.
Despite its repetitive story line, I gladly recommend this book to those who have an open and creative mind. Its concepts and story should have wide appeal, especially in the world of business.
