This book is bright, simple and has a great rhythm. It's easy to get your children to begin reciting in reply to each statement 'but not the hippopomus!' I found my, then 2 1/2 year old 'reading' this book (from memory) to her little sister after only a few weeks. Excepting the fact that many of the terms used for the animals are hardly recognizable outside the US, it is a great little book. A word of warning though... it's not a good bedtime book unless you plan to read it 30 times before their heads hit the pillow.

What a wonderful story! I never thought that my almost 2-year old would say "hippopotamus" and "armadillo" but he does! And when the hippo joins in, he puts his arms in the air and yells "But yes, the hippopotamus," then saddens slightly as we finish with, "But not the armadillo." It's definitely a five-star book.

Sandra is just about our favorite writer when it comes to books for pre-schoolers. She combines witty and silly rhymes along with her trademark humorous cartooning style to make classic after classic. The best children's books for pre-schoolers are those that make them laugh. It's not all about trying to educate them all the time and Sandra's books always put a smile on my 2 1/2 year old's face. This time a silly Hippopotamus is not having any fun at all. All the other animals are off playing and doing fun things and as each of them goes off to do their thing we read..."But not he Hippopotamus!" The poor guy is feeling left out until the rest of the animals eventually invite him to join in. And then he's happy but there's a surprising and funny twist at the end of the story. Really a fun story. As usual it's a nice, sturdy board book that will stand up to a lot of abuse. Highly recommended.
