For a comprehensive course in human impacts on ecology, this is a great read. Even for someone fairly well-educated about environmental issues, I felt it gave me a better ability to defend a pro-environmental position with clear logic and detailed examples.
The historical examples give the sort of detail that we all really need to look at. That is the major selling point for this book. Some people want to look the other way on environmental issues and say that humans have always used their ingenuity to solve problems - but Diamond provides numerous examples of how this attitude has lead to the complete Collapse of a society. In a time when some of the first "Resource Wars" are already being fought over oil, land, and food, this book is important reading for anyone who wants to keep this planet viable for human existence.
As with Guns, Germs, and Steel, it is very information-dense. It may be somewhat inaccessible to some readers who would otherwise really benefit from getting this information. The major ideas in Diamond's books could easily be conveyed in a Cliff Notes - you'd get the take-home message nearly as well as if you'd read the book - but it's the historical examples that really make the book. If you liked Guns, Germs, and Steel you'll really enjoy it. |

Someone gave me Guns, Germs, and Steel last Christmas, and I enjoyed it so much I had to buy the sequel, if you will, Collapse. Normally, the sequel is not greater than the original, but in this case it was. Both books are among my very favorites. Buy and read this book. All world history courses should throw away their textbooks and replace them with Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse. These two books provide a big picture on how societies and civilizations rose and fell. |
