Mr. Eckhart Tolle's teachings are excellent for the Westerners who just begin to wake up not so much to the "true reality" as to the basic falseness of our existence. This is, of course, the most important first step in the right direction. Unlike many contemporary spiritual teachers, Mr. Tolle is not afraid to speak about the madness present in our psyches and in our civilization, and it is very amusing to apply his analysis to the political correctness and the individual rights movement (which both show then their true colors as the ego-reinforcing, freedom-denying ideologies.) In this respect Mr. Tolle is providing a precious service which, however, is more easily accessible in, say, his "Stillness Speaks" than in the present volume.

In contrast to the Oriental (especially East Indian) exponents of Advaita Vedanta, its Western followers tend at some point to veer into the self-help mode. Mr. Tolle is no exception here as evinced by his discourse on the pain-body. Ramana Maharshi would simply ask, "Who feels this pain- body?" and it would become immediately obvious that the right answer is "nobody". But perhaps Mr. Tolle's concern with such merely egoic concepts is a concession to the coarse human nature of the majority of his readers.

I am also rather surprised by Mr. Tolle's adherence to the concept of reincarnation (which term he seems to use as including metempsychosis.) Although still very much present in the popular spiritual culture, this idea has been convincingly debunked not only be Rene Guenon and Ananda K. Coomaraswamy but also - from a different perspective - by Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj. With Mr. Tolle, however, this may be simply a wordplay since he speaks elsewhere about us "reincarnating" at every instance of regaining our consciousness. Even so, reincarnation - just like the pain-body - is a concept quite alien to the general metaphysical landscape of Mr. Tolle's teachings.

Another surprise, this time on the factual level, is his repeating the fallacious story about 2-3 million witches having been killed by the Church. This feminist fable has been proven untrue many, many times over (most recently during the Da Vinci Code controversy) and Mr. Tolle - usually very accurate in the matters of historical record - should really know better (the facts are: not 2-3 million but about 150 thousand, and not all women but 25% men; also, mostly not at the hands of the Catholic church but by the Protestants.)

Despite these shortcomings The New Earth is a valuable text for initiating a transformation of human consciousness at the most rudimentary level. Once this is accomplished, Ramana Maharshi or Nisargadatta Maharaj should be allowed to take over.

If you are a fan of Tolle's, this book will delight you. It gives a clear, concise, summary of the major points he had made in other books but elaborated upon insightfully for practical application in one's life. This is a book that I plan to re-read many times (I'm a slow learner, it seems), and I've already garnered a number of insights that have given me the courage to trust Life and let It carry to into further embrace of the Presence. I hope the audio CDs will be quickly available for my use on my daily walks, since of all the Tolle audios (lectures and book readings) that I have so far, I put the highest confidence in this one as providing a continuing powerful emotional boost and reminder (of what I and all of us already know but need constant reminding of).

I found the title (A New Earth) a tad misleading, since it is only in the last chapter (called "A New Earth") that the topic of the collective awakening (and global social, environmental, political transformation) is mentioned at all and then only briefly - but this suits me fine. Tolle basically believes that world transformation (an awakened New Earth) can only come into existence through individual awakening ("awakened doing"); all other action is ego-driven and will not bring us what we yearn for. This book has already helped me greatly in furthering my understanding that all "troubles" (my fears and addictions) are the result of ego identification and can be dropped with conscious awareness. If you relate to Tolle's previous work, you will surely love this book as the best yet.

I highly recommend this newest book by Eckhart Tolle! Similar to his The Power of Now, it is full of 'pointers' and 'reminders' of how bringing 'Being' into our outer world is what life is truly about. His statement that, '...your state of consciousness is primary, all else is secondary', says it all. What I really enjoyed about this book is that it explains exactly what consciousness is and how easy it is to be joyful, peaceful and happy NOW - this minute - not later on down the road after you have attained this or that! I bet that the people who connect with Eckhart's teachings are the ones who have been 'out of sync with life' and have had no success 'fitting in' with different religions, groups, places, etc., until now. People like that (myself included), will find Eckhart's books positively invaluable. As Eckhart points out, we have been trying to go back 'home' since we were born into form! Trust me, I can't explain it the way Eckhart does but I KNOW IT IS TRUE. I am one of those people who are uncomfortable around people who profess to 'know' and think that their way is the only way etc.; however, I am writing this review in hopes that it may be a meager 'pointer' for someone who is lost, worried or who may be suffering in some way. I believe that you will find the 'relief' you need and deserve in Eckhart's writings. Give this book your attention and see what happens!

Tolle's works are a blessing, in that they are very powerful for helping people evolve, and that they have caught on enough to impact so many people and thus our society at large. In reading the well thought out reviews of others, I can't help but chime in with what I think is the most important aspect of Tolle's books - that they vibrate strongly and offer the presence ("being", "now"...) that he speaks about. The books allow us to relax into and vibrate along with this presence, thus helping the reader to know what "now" is, and to learn how to stay "there". Tolle, in this book and the Power of Now, does have a lot to say, a lot of theories and ideas, all of which are very interesting and grounded in long-standing spiritual traditions (of various kinds; not a particular line); but for me it's all stuff to keep me busy while I enjoy the feeling of the work. However, as many reviewers have mentioned, for lots of readers, this information - the ideas - will be very powerful if they have never been entertained before. Overall, all of Tolle's books are recommended very highly.

As long as I spend 30 minutes a day reading and rereading A New Earth I'm often able to watch the ego and not become totally identified with the incessant thoughts running through my mind. I am having more and more glimpses of inner-peace when I practice the exercises Eckhardt Tolle suggests. Just reading the book once may not make such profound changes since the ego is very clever but as long as the reader continually reads and meditates on Tolle's profound wisdom, an opening of a change of consciousness emerges. I've written up the exercises that are interspersed throughout the book and the most salient points so that I can review them throughout the day.

This is unquestionably the best life guidance book ever written if you are in pursuit of enlightenment; that is, an understanding of the true nature of life, the universe, and everything (to steal a famous line). It is a Bible of the New Age and should be read and re-read over time to use as a guide to a better, happier life. Tolle skillfully selects quotes from the Christian Bible and other religious texts to exemplify his points and presents them in a modern, understandable form.

The concept he is teaching is very simple: there is only NOW, but the ramifications of actually "getting it" are truly miraculous. If you are interested in spirituality but the organized religions of today leave you puzzled and unfulfilled, please read this book as well as its predecessor The Power of Now.

This book is designed to remind you who you really are. Eckhart accomplishes what he alone could not do. He has opened the flood gates of awareness upon those who can understand his words.

If you resist the words of this book, you are resisting your own reflection. If you feel that he has cheated or manipulated you in some way, you really don't understand at all.

He is simply trying to rouse you from your slumber to take part in this life the way it was meant to be lived.

If you cannot stand to look at your own reflection, your life will be hell. If you can accept and embrace what you see, your hell will turn into heaven.

He is simply trying to hand you a mirror. It is the most precious gift he can give you.

This book expresses Tolle's vision of more and more people becoming enlightened to the truth of what we are, and through this a new earth where there is not so much blood shed through egoic selfishness. Tolle finally goes into a little detail about himself. He is a spiritual master with out a religion. His vision of a new earth is like the Anti-book of revelation we find in the Bible his book is positive and uplifting. I rank his modern writings at the same spiritual level as the best of the bible and Buddhism.

Facing emptiness during a string of unfulfilling jobs forced me to take action; there has to be more to life, this series and other Eckhart books helped me through the transition I am making in my life and I have not had this much joy for a long time. I was ready for this, really hitting bottom emotionally, but knowing there is purpose for living another day; I always regected organized religion for spiritual direction and without getting too heavy Eckhart speaks in terms that does not make my stomach knot up when he does speak of religious philosophies such as Zen Buddhism and Christianity strictly for the purpose of understanding yourself and getting a handle on your situation, I very much recommend this. Right up there with "The Four Agreements" another must read for living a peaceful and meaningful life. Good luck to all, you are worth the investment!

When I heard the title of Tolle's new book, I thought, "It's about some kind of utopia." But it isn't. It's about what it would take to get there. Here is his description: "'A new heaven' is the emergence of a transformed state of human consciousness, and 'a new earth' is its reflection in the physical realm."

Only speculation can envision where that transformed state might lead. So imagine a world where even half the human race were conscious; or even one-fourth; or even one-tenth. Consciousness generates a "vibrational frequency" as Tolle describes it. A kind of magnetic pulls to anything around it. People around a conscious person are influenced by that pull. Anyone who has heard Tolle in person has felt that. It's like being drawn toward something so perfect and profound you want to be part of that state of existence. Multiply that by millions of people generating the same attraction and then imagine the effect on those who are not conscious and the new earth it could create.

A new earth where no one would wantonly harm another living thing because to do so would feel like harming yourself; where there would be no need for laws or the institutions that enforce them; where people would live in harmony with each other and their environment; where wars would cease to exist; where people by natural inclination would look out for others so no one would be in want. This perfect world could come about because of the awakened awareness of our own true nature - consciousness.

But that's my idea of utopia. Tolle only implies how such a world may be possible. And of course as the Taoist writer Deng Ming Dao says, "There is no utopia. There never will be. There is only the valiant attempt of each person to live spiritually in a world where spirituality is almost impossible." We are fortunate in this period of time to have a great teacher like Eckhart Tolle to show us how to make spirituality possible. And to do it in such precise, clear language, profuse with examples and the words of other great spiritual teachers, as to make it possible for anyone who earnestly seeks spiritual truth to find it. What one finds in reading this book is how to reach the perfection of the "new heaven" if not the "new earth. That may be all that's possible, and ultimately all that matters.
