"The events [in a child's bedroom] are quiet ones-the ticking of a clock, the reading of a book . . . Alternating with the interior landscapes is the moon's-eye-view across the globe of other slumber scenes . . . nomads and camels crouched among desert dunes, a lion likcing her cubs in a faraway den. A dreaming child blends the two worlds in a caravan of color."
  • Publisher's Weekly (MSL quote), USA   <2006-12-30 00:00>

"With quiet phrases and luxurious color, Banks and Hallensleben evoke a perfectly peaceful bedtime . . . As night gently envelops the landscapes, the words and art convey the snug warmth of a featherbed and a world as small as a neighborhood."

This is a fantastic child's book! It is gorgeously illustrated with mysterious, lush, beautiful night scenes; the text is rhythmic, soothing, subtle poetry of the highest quality. I've been reading this book to my niece for three years and she loves it still! When she was four I'd read it to her and she would get to "read" the refrain "And if the moon could talk" each time it appeared. When she was five and six she'd read it with ever-increasing ease as she learned to read; now that she's seven we alternate pages, but she still has her favorite parts she will not allow me to read-she insists on having those pages to herself. We imagine we live in the beautiful town, assigning houses to grandma, uncles, and cousins. This is a book to treasure!

This perfect bedtime book is utterly charming. The colorful, impressionist-like artwork is terrific - full of familiar animals and objects that the little readers can find and point out. The text is nearly poetic as it moves deftly from the real world to the world of imagination, and inexorably, toward sleep and dreams. Our son and daughter (21 months and six months old respectively) both love it. A must have for all parents who make reading to small children a bedtime ritual.

I would like to give 10 stars. This is certainly the nicest book I ever read to my children, and we have so many books at home. They are so fascinated with the poetic text and the beautiful indoor and outdoor artwork. This book is clever, delicate, profound, moving. It makes children dream and learn. I am sure it will be around for as long as Goodnight Moon has been with us. This is a unique masterpiece and people here in France have understood that: the book is sold out.

I love this book! The pictures are amazing-the text, more like poetry than prose. To me, it is so beautiful that it actually makes me a little weepy.
Best of all, my 19-month old son brings it to us again and again (saying "moon, moon"). It's one of the few "bigger-kid" books he will actually sit through!
To me, it is nothing like Goodnight Moon (which we also love)-it is a whole different category!
