My son is just barely 6 and will be a big brother in about 3 weeks. I got this book to help prepare him for the arrival of his baby sister and it was a great purchase. It has helped him understand that the baby will be pretty helpless for a while, and that he can help with the baby. It also talks about how great it is to be the "big kid". It is a simple book that doesn't have a lot of pages. It would definitely be appropriate for younger children.

My 21-month-old son loved this book while I was pregnant. When the baby was born, he quoted the book to us many times, going over and over what babies can and cannot do. "Can't walk, can't talk, can't play toys... can drink milk, can sleep, can cry." I think it really helped him with a difficult adjustment, and gave him the reassurance that Mommy and Daddy love him still, even though there was a new baby to love, too.

I bought this book for my 1 1/2 yr old son, and I think he is starting to understand now that the baby he knows is in my belly will actually be living with us in our house permanently. Things I personally appreciate about the book are the fact that both mom and dad are present and involved in the baby's care and that certain facts of newborn life (such as crying and the baby's relative helplessness compared with what a toddler may expect) are covered in a matter-of-fact but positive way. I also like that the book emphasizes how much the parents love the older child and all the ways that he is special (e.g. "I can walk. I can talk. I can play with toys.") As I breastfed my son for over a year and hope to do the same with his baby sister, I do wish that nursing were mentioned in some way. Instead, the only discussion of feeding says "Babies like to drink milk" and "I can help give the baby a bottle." I think the book is still relevant for the vast majority of families since some will use formula some/all of the time and even among the breastfeeding moms, it's relatively uncommon to encounter a mom who never pumps. Even if you do plan never to use a bottle, I would definitely still recommend this book. This is a very small complaint. Overall, this book does a lovely job of preparing big brothers for their new job!

I bought this book for my stepson while I was still pregnant. I was worried he would become jealous once the baby was born. He was three at the time and loved this book. It really helped him understand that babies aren't capable of doing the things he does, which he was having a hard time grasping. He couldn't wait to "play baseball and build blocks as soon as his baby brother came out" of my "belly". I did have to make minor changes while reading the story because it is written with "Mommy & Daddy" but that wasn't a big deal. He's now 4 and my son is 5 months and this book remains one of his favorites. He always wants to "help give baby the bottle just like the GREAT big brother in the book to be the BEST big brother in the whole world"! It also lets siblings know that they are just as special and loved as the "new" baby is. God Bless!

This book is one of the favorite stories of our 18-month-old, so much so that we're able to quote the story during regular conversations during the day. we have yet to find out how well this book does for preparing our son for his little brother, but at least he knows that there are some things that big kids can do that babies cannot. I like the fact that the book emphasizes that a big brother can be very helpful with the new baby and is still very loved by his parents.
