Praise to this book! I was just not expecting to have it change my life! I walked into the bookstore looking for something to help me with my occasional destructive behavior and prayed to be led to the right one. I picked this edition up, sat on the floor, and was totally taken aback with just the introduction! I devoured the book in a short time and have decided to take a second run at a much slower pace. This book helped me to put "my purpose" and my self destructive behavior in a much clearer light. My husbands tells me he has definitely seen a change in my personality. I know I've changed - I feel it - I feel wonderful! |

This book is wonderful. I love Marianne's stories, particularly about her upbringing at the hands of an "eccentric Jewish father." "I come from a dysfunctional family," Marianne writes, "But who doesn't? This world is dysfunctional."
I have given this book as a gift twice, and I love Marianne's audio tapes upon which this book is based. Marianne Williamson is very direct and very strong. Her thinking is very clear. However, I would have to say that this book is for beginners on the path of the Course. The Course is a very demanding spirituality that makes us take stock of all our beliefs and eventually finds them to all be lacking. Further, the Course is founded on a non-dual view of God which many comment is quite similar to the Vedanta. Marianne does not tackle any of these more "abstract" themes of the Course in this book. The result is that the metaphysics of the Course do not always come vividly clear in this book. But that doesn't take away from the appeal of this book.

This book is packed with profound and practical spiritual truths. Marianne Williamson is writing with deep compassion and obviously has considerable first-hand experience of the principles she's writing about.
The basic message here is that we are all perfect expressions of love, and that the energy of love and God is all there is. Anything else is an illusion. All the judgments of oneself and others, feelings of superiority and inferiority and so on fall away if one chooses a path of unconditional surrender to God's will, that being the truth of who one is. Many practical examples of how to apply this approach are presented. I found the chapters on relationships and work particularly interesting.
As someone who struggled to get to grips with the original A Course in Miracles in the 1980s, I thank Marianne Williamson for giving us a more accessible version of the same powerful truths. As with the original text, some people (e.g. me!) may be a bit uncomfortable with some of the use of Christian terminology, but God and God's love are being re-defined here, in a similar fashion to Neale Donald Walsch's extraordinary Conversations With God books. Masterful stuff!

I first discovered this book 2 years ago. I specifically say discovered, for it's like unearthing a treasure. I can't begin to express the impact this book made upon my life & continues to do so. Williamson explains in vivid detail how thoughts & perception can literally alter your life. Happiness isn't something we're innately in contact with, it requires cultivation, something we actively choose every moment of everyday. Anguish & suffering is a part of the human condition, but it doesn't have to consume your life. Often- times modern society is so consumed with success, competition, and acquiring material things, we forget the concept of joy is also a part of the human condition. We have a right to anticipate it, but it doesn't just saunter up & plop in your lap. It's labor intensive. I found concrete steps on how to redirect my energies & thoughts, and eventually my reality. What value does life hold if we can not love, permit ourselves to be loved, & be joyful? This book is the ultimate "how to" improve your consciousness book. I refer to it every time I feel a bit blue. It's really my blueprint of reaffirming or correcting my thought patterns. I've highlighted points crucial for my life & refer when necessary. Most importantly it works without fail. That is indeed the true litmus test. I also strongly recommend Williamson's various cassette lecture series. If you're weary because of some negative things you may have read about Williamson I urge the reader to disregard them. Truthfully I don't care if she has some inconsistencies in her life, don't all humans? You're not moving into her home, you just want to benefit from some profoundly wise & inspiration advice. The basic truth is, the principles she details quite simply work. I am forever grateful to her & have purchased this book for my friends. If you desire to live & not just exist, this is a great gift for yourself & loved ones. Enjoy. |

This book has entirely changed my life, my perspective, my attitude, my feelings about myself and others, I could go on and on. This is something that I cannot stop talking about. Anyone who is lost, confused about religion, who feels poorly about themselves or others, depressed, or just doesn't feel like life is much "fun" anymore... read this book! I can't even tell you what a load it takes off and how wonderful it is to learn that God LOVES you, is not out to punish you, and only has your happiness in mind. I can suddenly walk into a room and feel GREAT about myself knowing that I am a BEAUTIFUL, wonderful child of God. It is the most amazing thing I have ever felt! From this book I have learned what life is about, and what it's not about. After reading it, I bought an additional 10 copies and hand them out to anyone who seems interested. My hope is that everyone can find this love that Maryanne teaches so that they may be as incredibly happy with themselves and their lives as I am today! |

I can't say how much this book has meant to me. Every time I have read it, the truth and the spiritual wisdom of Ms. Williamson's words strike deeper and deeper. She writes is a gentle flowing manner that speaks to the simplistic life of just learning how to love yourself because we are all extensions of God and the Universe and therefore are expressions of pure love. When you finally realize that in spiritual reality, all there is is love, then all your problems are immediately solved, and you finally realize these problems were never "real" in the first place. This is the "holy instant" or the miracle of "atonement" of which A Course in Miracles teaches. Even though I have never met Ms. Williamson personally, she has made more a difference in my life than anyone else. |

In its own way, A Return to Love is a seminal piece of writing, more for its message than its poetry. I turn to Marianne Williamson's when I need a little pick-me-up; I have found she is one of the few "religious" voices I can handle these days. This book is based on her interpretation of A Course in Miracles, a kind of New Age bible. I have never attempted to read that tome, so this book acts as a kind of cliff notes version for a mainstream audience. Its basic message is the following: when we are born, we are programmed perfectly to focus on love, but as we grow older we are taught a bad philosophy of fear. The key is to reconnect with our essential, loving selves by asking God to erase the fearful thoughts that block our essential selves. This process - letting go of fear and anger - is a miracle.
The logical side of me says that the central supposition of this book is false; in fact, children are born with both love and fear - on a primal level, anger in a baby (crying) is an expression that needs aren't being met, and that anger is an essential part of an infant's survival. In a sense, anger is a form of communication, and is something people are born with.
And, yet, this book distills spiritual principles in a language that is more accessible to a general audience than traditional religion. It has the power to reconnect people to a basic type of spirituality that is lacking in a lot of mainstream life. It also contains a lot of advice about relationships that is greatly helpful, and is a fun read. I found that reading it lead me to a greater curiosity about religion and spirituality; it is a gateway.

Not sure what A Course in Miracles is all about? Neither was I when I picked up this book. If you are new to these principles then you will thoroughly enjoy Ms. Williamson's book and come away with answers to your basic questions about A Course in Miracles. Plus Ms. Williamson writes in an easy style that makes this book accessible to all. More importantly, she speaks from the heart and inspires each of us to do the same. Given these troubled times, A Return to Love will be a source of comfort to many. My only problem with this book? When I first skimmed through it, I dismissed it as a lot of "Pollyannish" talk. It was only until later, at a low point in my life, that I found myself opening up to its wisdom. So if someone gives you this book as a present and you are not quite in a place for it? That's okay. Keep it on your shelf and it will be there for you at just the right moment. I highly recommend it to anyone searching for spiritual answers. |

It has been several years, now, since I've read this book and I'm still talking about it! This book unequivocally changed my life. Marianne basically tells us, with the help of A Course in Miracles, that LOVE is the only thing in our lives that is not an illusion. Everything else is. Think about it... it's so very simple, yet society tends to make things so complicated. This book helps us to look past the dysfunction in our lives and in our society and to focus on what is TRUE, what is LOVE. The other thing I like about this book is Marianne's candidness about her own life in the Introduction of the book. She's got a great sense of humor and she allows you to have comfort in knowing that she is an ordinary person, just like you and me. And her interpretation of Unconditional Love is simply beautiful! Thanks Marianne! Please write more! |

This book is a must have for every woman. It helped me to understand why relationships sometimes don't work. And how I could overcome the pains and devastation of a breakup. Especially, when left for another woman. I cried, I isolated myself from the world, I lost my self-esteem, I lost the will to want to live. Then a friend brought me this book and told me to please read it. It sat on my desk for weeks before I had the desire to read again. One day I picked it up, and started to read it. I wasn't able to put it down. I felt as if the book was written just for me.
So for every broken spirit, brought on by others. Read this, and you will make Marianne your favorite author. God bless her work. For even if it just heals one soul. In my eyes she was a heaven sent messenger from God... |
