  • Charles O'Reilly (Prof. of Human Resources and Organizational Behavior, Stanford University), USA   <2007-01-02 00:00>

HR from the Heart is in a class by itself. It is the first book I've seen on the topic that clearly spells out how HR managers can really add value to the organization. Libby's experience and insights are valuable not just for practicing HR managers but also for general managers who want to know how HR can help them leverage their people for competitive success.
  • Dave Ulrich (Professor, Author, Human Resource Champions) (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-02 00:00>

This book touches not only the heart, but the mind and soul of the HR profession. It’s full of ideas with impact, tools and tips for how to do HR, and wonderful stories. Readers will laugh and learn from one of the most respected HR leaders in the business. A superb book that will be a classic.
  • Beverly Kaye (Co-author, Love "Em or Leave "Em) (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-02 00:00>

The ultimate HR book for the 21st century. It’s everything you wanted to know and are glad someone ELSE asked... and told the truth! Libby Sartain talks to us with wit, great examples, and tough love.
  • Coleman Peterson (Executive V.P., People Division, Wal-Mart), USA   <2007-01-02 00:00>

I predict that this book will become a primer for all students of HR - both in the classroom and in the workplace. It’s the first book on human resources actually written by a human resources practitioner. Libby Sartain’s humor, insights, real-world anecdotes, and unabashed love for our profession have created a must-read for us all.
  • John Challenger (CEO, Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.), USA   <2007-01-02 00:00>

Every HR professional, top management executive, and business student should read this book. Sartain models how the corporate HR executive of the future will look, act, and think, and gives the reader a roadmap on how to get there. An energizing and rejuvenating read.
  • Phil Quigley (MSL quote), Hong Kong   <2007-01-02 00:00>

Libby Sartain lives what she writes. She's truly "been there, done that", and now she's finally sharing her hard won expertise with a worldwide audience. Having served valiantly in every HR job from entry level recruiter to Senior VP, she is no academic peering in from the sidelines, but an impassioned, veteran player in the heat of the game. And having built world class HR teams for such top performing organizations as Southwest Airlines and now Yahoo!, she uses real world experiences and stories to vividly illustrate " a day in the life of an HR leader". Don't let the title fool you...this book is not only for HR folks; it's an indispensable guide for any manager in any discipline keen to learn more about the human side of entreprise. This no nonsense coaching playbook is the first ever aimed at "new breed" HR professionals who are business people first and HR practitioners second. It's packed with useful anecdotes, success stories, tips, and "how to do it" advice that's clear, cogent and cost effective. It's especially useful for HR leaders here in Asia who want to become trusted business partners with what Libby calls " a seat at the table", ie., the respect of top management. She shows them, in simple, practical steps, how to apply "best of the best" HR practices in their own rapidly growing organizations. Speaking from the heart, Libby eschews buzzwords... she's terse, tough minded and definitive... she has a clear, unambiguous agenda and she pulls no punches. Reading this is like sitting in with her for a one on one coaching session... and best of all, you can put the game plan into practice straightaway! Underlying the stories and lessons is Libby's passion for her profession, her love of the game, and her warmth, wit and sense of humor that she uses so effectively to bring focus and pespective to to the task of building a world class talent machine.
  • Jim Citrin (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-02 00:00>

There is perhaps no function within a corporation that has as uneven a reputation as human resources. Ineffective HR officers are controlling, bureaucratic, and disdained by line managers. Highly effective HR officers, are by contrast, problem solvers, strategic advisors, confidants, and people who make things happen. HR from the Heart, replete with principles and lively anecdotes, is the single most effective book for making HR officers the true people leaders that they have the opportunity to become. And with this lively and entertaining book as your companion, you can unlock your organization's most important asset - its people.

There is so much upside for the HR community, broadly speaking, to become central to the life of business. HR from the Heart will lead the way.

  • A reader (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-02 00:00>

Finally, here's a book that gives us the tools and wisdom for navigating a career in human resounces. While there are hundreds of management and organization development books or books that describe one aspect of the human resource function, this is the first book I've seen that offers itself as a trusted friend that will help you not only do your job better but also take your career to the top. Coming from Libby Sartain, it's not just theory. She's been there herself every step of the way. Warning. If you're used to the typically formal business book personality, HR From the Heart will come as a shock. Sartain's person-to-person style breaks the mold. Read this book and you'll want to invite her to your house for dinner. In fact, you'll feel as though you already have!
  • Jeremy Eskenazi (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-02 00:00>

This is an outstanding HR book, and the primary reason it is so outstanding is because it is written by and for "real" HR people. It is not a book written by an academic or theorist. What I loved so much about this book were Libby Sartain's very specific examples of how she manuevered through tough corporate politics, organizational minefields, and ethical dilemmas in her many years of leading HR. These specific examples of what worked for her and what did not are extremely valuable to HR professionals today. Her thoughtful, conversational, and humorous style make this book a very appropriate primer for anyone who is in an HR leadership role and wants to really understand how to be not only an HR leader, but a great business leader. This book has no "bull" - its all real. As an HR consultant, I have purchased this book for each of my clients, and I definitely recommend it as required HR reading.
  • Dave (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-02 00:00>

I discovered HR from the Heart while searching for something that would trigger a sense of professional renewal within me. I own many excellent books on HR issues and competencies, but this one offered some of the best career counseling I could have found anywhere.

Libby Sartain spoke to me as a good friend of many years. She spoke to me as a good friend who knew that I have also been criticized for laughing too loud and enjoying my work too much; a good friend who was not afraid to share a vision and perspective for her work; a good friend who spoke with knowledge, professionalism, care and passion for her role in HR and the people she serves; and finally, a good friend willing to straighten out someone who might have spent the remainder of his career gaining competence, but never knowing a sense of joy, enthusiasm or mission.

HR from the Heart has moved me from a good job to a professional career that embodies the only work I want to do. Whether you love your career in HR or seek purpose beyond the next paycheck - I enthusiastically recommend this book to HR professionals.
