This book came to me at exactly the right time. She not only illustrates events in history but she also shares a method to allow us to release judgment and victimization allowing us to embrace the Divine in life and manifest our deepest dreams. Dr. Dyer was right, this book does have the ability to change your life.

In 1994, Rwandan native Ilibagiza was 22 years old and home from college to spend Easter with her devout Catholic family, when the death of Rwanda's Hutu president sparked a three-month slaughter of nearly one million ethnic Tutsis in the country. She survived by hiding in a Hutu pastor's tiny bathroom with seven other starving women for 91 cramped, terrifying days. This searing firsthand account of Ilibagiza's experience cuts two ways: her description of the evil that was perpetrated, including the brutal murders of her family members, is soul-numbingly devastating, yet the story of her unquenchable faith and connection to God throughout the ordeal uplifts and inspires. Her account of the miracles that protected her is simple and vivid. Her Catholic faith shines through, but the book will speak on a deep level to any person of faith. Ilibagiza's remarkable path to forgiving the perpetrators and releasing her anger is a beacon to others who have suffered injustice. She brings the battlefield between good and evil out of the genocide around her and into her own heart, mind and soul. This book is a precious addition to the literature that tries to make sense of humankind's seemingly bottomless depravity and counterbalancing hope in an all-powerful, loving God.

This is an important book for three reasons: first, how difficult it is for less developed countries to move beyond the mythic membership level of consciousness; second, how important her capacity to develop a contemplative prayer form to keep her from despare during the time in the closet; and third, her realization that only forgiveness of those who put her in this difficult situation would allow her to move forward with her life.

Thank you Immaculee for telling us this powerful story. Your faith in a loving God, your incessant prayers, your courage to keep going, believing that He would see you through, and finally your ability to forgive those who did you harm create a shining light that is so needed in this world! I hope we will hear from you again. You are an inspiration. I recommend this book for anyone who might think they are in an impossible situation. This story shows just how powerful a tool prayer can be.
  • Teri Persico (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-04 00:00>

A very powerful story about what truly happened in Rwanda by one of the survivors. This book was a page turner I couldn't put it down. A moving story of the will to live under the most trying conditions and circumstances and living proof that prayer, and communion with God is our highest source of good in any situation. It's hard to imagine that this type of brutality existed in this century after what happened in Nazi Germany! It begs the question why weren't all the world's leaders doing something to stop it?
  • Vicki (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-04 00:00>

This was one of the best books I've read in a long time. It was so good I passed it along to other friends who also said they could not put it down. After seeing Immaculee with Wayne Dyer, where he read the book introduction which brought tears to my eyes, I went out and purchased the book. As a Christian I applauded Immaculee for speaking out about her faith. The book was written in a way that grabs the reader from the first page and does not let go until the end. Thank you Immaculee, for opening your heart and your life and sharing your story with us! I am embarrassed to say that I didn't know much if anything about the Rwandan Holocaust and I can only pray that it never happens again anywhere.
  • Laura (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-04 00:00>

I read many good books in my life but never felt compelled enough to review any of them. This book was an exception. I want to let others know about this book because I believe it has the power to change one's life. As a teacher, I am planning to recommend this book to all of my students. Immaculee's amazing story has renewed, deepened, and strengthened my faith in God. Her experiences remind us that God's joy, light, and presence can be experienced even - and especially - in the darkest and most horrifying moments of our lives. Her example shows us that forgiveness is the only choice we have if we want to live our lives in freedom, joy, and Truth. At the end of the book, I was in awe, inspired, and profoundly transformed. Read this book. You will be a better human being for doing so.
  • R. Dodd (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-04 00:00>

This is a troubling book, and yet inspiring beyond words. How many of us have struggled to practice love, compassion, forgiveness and positive belief in our everyday "normal" world? Imagine doing it in the midst of unimaginable terror - at the epicenter of Hell on Earth.

In the middle of an apocalypse that shatters a beautiful life, author Immaculee Ilibagiza discovers that her battle to survive the holocaust in Rwanda is really a battle waged inside of her. It is faith, love, hope and courage that are in a life-or-death struggle against the voices inside her that whisper dark things in the darkest of times.

Left to Tell is an important tale simply because what happens on this planet happens to all of us. This is an incredible story of courage, madness, miracles, and the power of forgiveness. Immaculee teaches that to forgive the unforgivable, to heal the world, and ourselves, we need only to see that fear is poison and the antidote is love.
  • O. Brown (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-04 00:00>

This beautiful book is the story of Immaculee Ilibagiza, a young woman who survived the Rawandan Holocaust, and despite all of her losses, including the brutal slaying of most of her family members, discovered an intense spirituality and a mission for the rest of her life to tell her story and help others. Left to Tell has been compared to the stories of Anne Frank and Viktor Frankl and I would agree. I think that Immaculee Ilibagiza's story will be something that I will never forget, and that I will carry with me in the way of The Diary of Anne Frank and Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning. Yes, it is this memorable.

Wayne Dyer is aggressively promoting this book and Immaculee's story, and rightly so - this is how it came to be published. It is an inspirational story of almost unbelievable suffering and unbelievable forgiveness. I knew very little about Rwanda before reading the book, and had very little interest also. I read the book all in one sitting, because I couldn't put it down. Immaculee describes (with the assistance of co-writer Steve Erwin) her inner struggles and how she grappled with many negative emotions, eventually overcoming them as her spirituality grows and changes.

Immaculee was raised Catholic, but the spirituality of the book has a universal appeal. Published by Hay House and promoted by Wayne Dyer, it has an appeal that will inspire even an atheist (while not offending them) and bolster the faith of those who already believe in God, whatever they conceive God to be. This is a story of the triumph of a human spirit, and about our interconnectedness. It is a story of a country who suffered while ignored by the rest of the world. It is a story of incredible suffering of so many, and gives those of us who have not suffered the way Immaculee has the benefits of lessons that we could learn in no other way.
