A Swiftly Tilting Planet has been one of my two favorite children's books, alongside Old Yeller, ever since I read it as a kid. Rereading it the other night prior to the broadcast of the A Wrinkle in Time TV movie, I had the same epiphany I've read about other people having when they reread The Lord of the Rings as adults: I didn't remember how sad this book is. Yes, I remembered the Chuck storyline clearly, and I knew it was sad as a kid, but I wasn't prepared for how much more powerful I would find it as an adult. I was actually crying when the grandmother asked that the children wait to use the rune until "the time is ripe". Like in "Casablanca", the problems of a family being destroyed by the bad things in life don't amount to a hill of beans compared to nuclear war... I can't imagine an intelligent child who likes time travel stories not falling in love with this book, which will always have a cherished place in my heart. |

A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L'Engle combines the threats of nuclear war in today's society with the more complicated science of time travel. Mad Dog Branzillo, a South American Dictator, frightens the whole world with possibilities of dropping a nuclear bomb on America. It is up to Charles Wallace, a 15-year-old genius, his sister, Meg, and a mysterious rune to save the world from destruction. Charles' mission is to travel back in time with a unicorn named Gaudior to alter the past. In order to do this incredibly difficult and dangerous task, he must venture inside of people's souls to live with them and change the course of their lives so that Mad Dog Branzillo will not be born as a nemesis. Guided by this almighty rune, calling on all heaven with its power, and kything, or sending messages through the mind, with Meg, he fights to triumph over evil and to seek peace. his book delighted me because of the great mystery of the time travel. I would recommend this book to anyone else who enjoys time travel and good fiction. I would not suggest this book to a person who does not enjoy fantasy or other books of the sort. A Swiftly Tilting Planet is fun to read and I would suggest that everybody read it and the others in the series. |

I can't really remember when I first read Madeleine L'Engle. It must have been before I was 12. But she is one of my favorite authors, and this book is my favorite of hers! Each time I read it I feel like I get more out of it. I can't wait to get back home and read this book again. This book is complex. I would recommend it to anyone who is of the opinion they can think, regardless of age. Yes, it is disturbing at times. But that's no reason to prevent a child from reading it, for life is disturbing at times. What's important here is that good triumphs over evil in the end, due to choices people make, and due to a higher power. And I don't think there is anything wrong with being pregnant! Meg is probably thinking of writing her thesis or something at the time; it is kind of besides the point of the story. Also fascinating are the historical references to an apparently European genetically influenced tribe in America long before Columbus. It makes me wonder, and I also wonder where L'Engle came up with the rune. Really, I can't say enough, just read this book! |

These series from L'Engle are amazing and I couldn't get enough of it. Especially this book. It has so much adventure and mysteries that it seems like you're involved with the story. It's full of surprises that it will keep you reading on and on for hours. The characters are wonderful and unpredictable. You'll never know what's going to happen next and you always learn something new from them. It's a good book but I don't think the character's personality should have changed so much though... Meg who was once an adventurous girl is now a housewife. But that's reality right? That is why the book is great, it has a little mix of reality and imagination and you could picture everything from what you read in the book. I would totally recommend this book to anyone around any age group. You'll enjoy it. |

I enjoyed this book very much because of how the author told the story and what the story was about. And you always learn something new whenever you were to read the book. The book is so realistic that you could imagine every picture in your head, that’s how descriptive those words were. It was an amazing book. It's full of fun and about the good side trying to prevent the bad side from destroying the world before he could. I recommend this book to anyone who is up for adventure, mysteries and surprises. |

This book is wonderful!! The plot is amazing and although I liked A Wrinkle In Time better, it is now one of my favorite books! At this time, all the mentioning about the nuclear war and Mad Dog Branzillo, just reminds me of our situation. I wish I could go back in time and save us as Charles Wallace did. I also liked the fact that Calvin and Meg are now married, and Meg expecting. The rune that Calvin's mother gave to Charles was very interesting and it leaves me wondering how Mrs. L' Engle came up with it. On the subject of coming up with things, I like how Mrs. L' Engle used Latin for some of the character's name's such as Gaudior. Overall this book was amazing and wonderful~I could not suggest a better book to read. |

Madeleine L'Engle's A Swiftly Tilting Planet is an excellent book in my opinion. Demonstrating a well thought up plot and a twist of suspense this book is definitely a five star. What makes A Swiftly Tilting Planet even better is the extraordinary use of science fiction. Another technique displayed by L'Engle is the return of her characters, Meg Murry O'Keefe and Charles Wallace. So far I have greatly appreciated this interesting piece of literary work. Other aspects that I thought were very creative were the setting and the unusual characters, such as the flying unicorn. I can easily relate to the main character Meg Murry O'Keefe because we are both young women growing up in an ever-changing world. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is up for the challenge of amazing novel written by Madeleine L'Engle. That is why I really enjoy the book, A Swiftly Tilting Planet. |

Like many other readers, I loved A Wrinkle in Time, liked A Wind in the Door (but not as much), and so was pleasantly surprised with this book. I admit from the summaries it does sound somewhat contrived, even cheesy. But it's not at all. The main theme of this book is a balance between things, and how people and events are so interrelated, even though they don't seem to be at first. It is fascinating how the two brothers thing (a form of Cain and Abel, of course, although it's not that obvious) repeats itself over and over through the different timelines and can be changed by the smallest alteration. You should definitely read this book, even if you haven’t read the others (although it does help!) |

This is a wonderful book as Charles Wallace Murry attempts to solve the mystery of an ancient Welsh rune in time to save the world - and perhaps the entire universe. As he travels in time, the links gradually come together between Madoc and Zyll, the Maddoxes, and Mad Dog Branzillo, but will he be able to stop a nuclear war? I read A Wrinkle in Time and A Wind in the Door for the first time a couple of weeks ago, after hearing all my life that they were the most wonderful books out there (I am 23 now). I enjoyed them, but also found them a bit simplistic, understandable since L'Engle mainly writes for children. However, I haven't been able to put down A Swiftly Tilting Planet. The story is so wonderful and the suspense keeps you turning the pages as you try to put the mystery together. I wonder why no one really mentions this book, because in my opinion, it is the best of the Time Quartet. |

I'm new to reading L'Engle. My friend introduced me to A Wrinkle in Time and I decided to take a chance. I'm sure glad I did! These books are all energizing and easy to follow. The way she wove in different time periods was amazing - like I was really there! It takes a good writer to do that! It's the best book yet. I like the Bible verses she adds into the story, even if all her themes don't seem to agree. A Swiftly Tilting Planet is a great book! It sure won't let A Wrinkle in Time fans down! |
