MSL Pointer Review: By far one of the most irreverent and wittiest political books you're likely to stumble upon.

This book is just stupid. I'm a former history teacher and although some of this book is researched and some is accurate, it's obnoxious, idiotic, and in poor taste. I mean really if you have to superimpose naked aged bodies onto the faces of supreme court justices to get a laugh don't you think it's time to retire? Whether you agree with the justices or not, they're accomplished and need to be treated with respect. This book is shameful and in poor taste. I wouldn't let your kids look at it, wouldn't put in school libraries, and wouldn't recommend it. Learn some manners!

    (A negative review. MSL remarks.)

Let me start off by saying, politically, I generally lean to the right. However, I still watch The Daily Show religiously. (It truly is a breath of fresh air from the "PC" craze that fills the news casts today.) So naturally I was anxious to read Jon's book. I loved it! I would like to add I could not believe some of the poor reviews people gave it. They obviously don't understand what Jon was going for. First of all, for anyone who says it is a bad text book- it's not supposed to be an actual teaching aid. It's supposed to be funny! Secondly, to everyone who said the book -inappropriately- cut down the founding fathers, current politicians, historical events, and everything in between, I must disagree. For one to think the history of the America was upstanding and perfect is absurd. As Americans I think we have an obligation to understand Americans are not perfect. The book addresses slave ownership by the founding fathers, equal rights being trampled on in the constitution (by race and gender), unfair treatment of Native Americans, as well as the publics apathy to name a few. Obviously the authors made up most of the facts but if you can't figure that out after the forward by Thomas Jefferson you need more help than a parody book can provide. In spite of the "political correct" obsession in this country, Jon is able to take a step back, say what's on his mind, and make a great read. If you are looking for a history text book for school, get something else. If you are not allowed to watch PG-13 movies due to adult language, i suggest you get something else. However, if you would like a good laugh I strongly recommend America (The Book).

Profiling various sectors of the government with witty, Doonesbury like comic book renderings, statistically humorous charts, and his usual cut of sardonic, Jersey-Jewish influenced, Ivy League educated prose, Stewart brilliantly satires the modern state of politics. Written as a mockery of a school-based text-book, students would surely get more understanding and realism from this modern account of politics, than from a watered down, Euro-centrically biased Wiley/McGraw Hill/Prentice Hall published textbook.

While all chapters are amazing, particularly funny I found the International based chapter with various hilarious metaphors and picturistic diagrams describing the affairs of the International Arena.

Best book I've read in years. I wish I could give it more stars, because this book deserves it. The Daily Show squad struck gold with this one. It's absolutely hysterical. I never thought a book could make me laugh so hard. I almost suffocated at several points. If you're at all a Daily Show fan, or just like things that are funny, you owe it to yourself to give this book a shot.

A note on the humor: Some of the negative reviews of this book decry its vulgarity and "sophomoric" humor, citing the page of naked Supreme Court justices and the notoriously vulgar Duchess of Kent. To all such reviewers I say: Get off your high horse and enter the real world. Simply because a work at times indulges in colorful language does not at all lessen its value. Indeed, it is the juxtaposition of such famous historical figures with the unexpected language that often makes for the funniest portions of the book. In a chapter about the founding fathers, no one expects John Adams to call Thomas Jefferson f***nuts, or for Senators to settle their disputes through the use of waffle canes. I suppose if you are too up tight to even read such language, or believe so fervently that our founding fathers were some kind of saints that should never even be joked at, this isn't the book for you. But fortunately, the vast majority of humanity is smarter than that, and for you this book is perfectly suited.

And one of the best parts is that through the reading of this book, you actually get a decent background in American history. Those who are quick to point out its inaccuracies obviously lack the intelligence to be able to discern when Stewart and his team are being facetious. Not that I got every joke in the book; I'm not too proud to admit some of the references were over my head. But those that I did understand were completely hystorical. And the textbook quality of the book is just brilliant. I love the classroom activities at the end of each chapter. Highly recommended.
