Potatoes not Prozac is the most popular of the serotonin literature that has been produced over the last several years. I have read two other books Secrets of Serotonin by Carol Hart and The Serotonin Solution by Judith J. Wurtman. They all agree that the best way to boost serotonin levels is to eat a nearly all carbohydrate meal or large snack at least three hours after consuming the last protein food. Proteins contain the amino acid tryptophan which is needed to make serotonin. However, the tryptophan molecules are large and have difficulty crossing the blood brain barrier when other amino acids are present. The eating of carbohydrates boosts the levels of insulin in our blood. Insulin moves these other amino acids into the muscle cells allowing the tryptophan to more abundantly enter into the brain.
Potatoes not Prozac recommends the consumption of a potato without added fat three hours after consuming the evening meal. Potatoes have the highest satiety index which is surprising considering how rapidly they boost blood sugar levels and how rapidly the blood sugar level returns to baseline. This would normally signal that it is time to eat again. But potatoes are so satisfying because they provide the greatest serotonin boost of any food. For those with blood sugar management difficulties, a food with a lesser glycemic index such as oatmeal may be substituted.
Serotonin Solution advances a variety of apron aches depending on a person’s life situation. However, most of the solutions recommend a 45 carbohydrate gram snack in addition to the regular meals a person eats. Most carbohydrate foods have about 80 calories for each 15 grams of carbohydrate, so we are talking about an additional 250 calories.
Secrets of Serotonin recommends a nearly all carbohydrate breakfast. This has the advantage of a large lapse of time since the last protein was consumed. It also fits in well for those who are used to eating cereal for breakfast. This is the most reasonable approach for those who want to boost their serotonin levels without adding additional calories. It is also the easiest to adapt to an existing lifestyle.
I recommend that all of these books be read to get a good understanding of serotonin and its connection to healthy living.

This book has changed my life and will change the world. Dr. DesMaisons has put together the missing links - maybe not everything we need to know about brain chemistry, but enough so we now have a solution that works. I don't care “what” your disorder - if it is connected with mood, food or addiction this book will help immensely. If you have ever struggled with depression, gained back weight after a diet, wondered why you couldn't do the things you knew you wanted to, this book is for you.
The problem, of course, has been that we knew how we should feel (good) and how we should eat (good stuff) and what we should do (exercise, pay the bills, clean the house) BUT we haven't been able to do it. It was too much for us. By following her 7 simple steps you find the food doing what therapy, Prozac and all the will-power in the world never could.
I would happily trade everything I have for this book now that I know what it does for me. The longer I stay on it, the easier it gets. There are literally too many bonuses to name, but one bonus is weight loss! Another is her web site that makes every help available to support you in your program.
Do your problems seem hopeless? Do you think you won't be able to do this? Drop by her community forum and see how many folks felt just the same way. If you don't buy another book this year, this is the one you owe yourself. This one will change you, your life, your family. Get it before you spend another month wondering why you can't make things work. You can, with the simple plan in Potatoes Not Prozac.
