For anyone who has ever been a band girlfriend/wife, every word of this book will ring true. It is so refreshing to read about the era and heroes that defined my life from the point of view of the girlfriend/wife. Cynthia Lennon doesn't whine or trash John, she tells the truth as it applied to her and her son. The need to tell the other side of the story and set the record straight is completely understandable. This book was a delightful and nostalgic reminder of life in the 60’s. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly the writing flows. |

As a lifelong fan of the Beatles I have read almost everything written about or by them. The thing I found interesting about this book is the depth it goes into revealing how truly callous, uncaring and cowardly John really was. I have always found it hypocritical for people to canonize Lennon as a "humanitarian", and "world peace leader", when he could not take care of his own family or even make peace with his own partner, Paul. The lengths Yoko went to to seduce another woman's husband, while she herself was married to another man, also make a statement about her constitution. Overall, the book is certainly interesting from an alternate perspective and reveals the goings on of Johns family from an insider point of view. It did reveal many unknown facts and events to me, but there again things that will only be of interest to the hard core fan. Overall, I enjoyed it immensely and laud Cynthia for telling her and Julian's story. |

As a Beatles fan, I have read many books about the fab four over the years. Most of these books basically have retold the same stories, but from a different perspective. When I picked up "John" by Cynthia Lennon, I was really hoping to learn something new and different about John Lennon and found that this book does give you a different look at John and I did learn new things about him. Alot of the stories we all know, but it was interesting to hear them from her perspective. John Lennon was a complex man who loved his family, music, and life. He was also a tortured soul who had to live with some past demons. It really made me wonder what kind of man he would of turned out to be if he had gotten some psychological help. I felt like the whole book was pretty upbeat until Yoko came into the picture. Of course Cynthia is the ex-wife of John, so we can't expect her to paint a loving picture of Yoko although she does say some nice things about her. All in all, I kept wanting to tell Cynthia to stand up for herself during the book especially since she talks so much about John needing and wanting someone to take care and control of him which is why Yoko was so appealing to him. It is a good read and in the end you feel like John was really starting to get his life together again before we lost him. If you like books about the Beatles, read this one. It is worth the time. |

I remember reading a John Lennon interview where it seemed he was trying to justify his treatment of his first son by saying that Sean, his second son and a planned child, was more his son than Julian. I was a bit shocked at what he was saying in that interview and if you believe Cynthia and Julian-and I do-you have to wonder about John. He had some flawed thinking which caused him to abandon every meaningful and productive relationship in his life to be with Yoko Ono. You certainly could argue that his relationship with Paul was productive. And that Cynthia and Julian, his first family, were with him when he was the great John Lennon. With Yoko, he decended into mediocrity and what I'm assuming was chronic drug addiction. John being in the advanced stages of drug addiction was strongly suggested shortly after his murder in another article I read at the time and have not seen since. In that article, it was reported that the emergency room staff that received John after he was shot were shocked at his general physical state.
I have to say I was a little disappointed that Cynthia didn't bring up more stories about being around when John wrote songs. She implied that she was frequently asked to critique but the only first hand experience she specifically brought up was "You're going to lose that girl". She did mention "All my Loving" as being a John song and I always assumed it was primarily a Paul song since he sings it. I wonder if she might have been confused about that one. Overall, I really liked the book and as a diehard Beatle fan, I still think Cynthia was the right gal for John.
