Ina Garten gives us a very americanized french recipe book. Many of her recipes are americanized, and familiar. Geared more toward the casual cook than some of the other french cookbooks available this year. But Ina can't do wrong as far as I'm concerned, though her recipes tend to be anything but dietetic. It's probably more accurate to classify the food in this cookbook as "inspired by french cooking," than strictly french fare. However, for some home cooks, this might be exactly the right approach.

Great for the gourmet as well as the novice. Ina has made me a cook... a real cook! Everything I have made has been wonderful! Ina, you're the best!

If you like Ina as I do, you will like this book. You can hear her voice in the way it is written, just as she speaks. Her recipes are clear and straight forward. She doesn't pull any punches. I plan on cooking every one of these recipes eventually. I have never gone wrong with any of her recipes, they always turn out great, and my family loves them as well.

My only regret about this cookbook is that I have neglected for so long to type my review. I really love Ina Garten, her cookbooks, and her Food Network show. She has such a relaxed, engaging, lovely way about her, and it certainly translates to her recipes. I am a fairly adventurous cook, and so have used lots of complicated recipes, and respect many of the chefs cited in the very thorough review above by B. Marold. In my opinion, though, this cookbook is absolutely tops for recreating the taste, feel, and experience of French bistro food. Also, every single recipe I have made turns out beautifully every time. I place a very high value on reliability, but an even higher value on taste, and this book delivers both! Highly recommended!

We always think that French cuisine is very complicated but Ina shows in this book that many french recipes are simple and absolutely delicious. I love it! It's a beautiful book and a great gift to give. At the same time I bought Simple and Simply Delicious by Sylvie Rocher, which is also wonderful

I am French myslef and sometimes struggle to adapt my French receipes to the US food/creams/ingredients.

This book gave me a fresh look at French food and at US adaptations. I have made some of the receipes already, and they all turned out very well. My only caution when following the receipes: do not use all the butter/oil she recommends. Her receipes are too greasy. For eg, when you cook the mashed potatoes, she makes you fry the garlic clove in olive oil, then she makes you pour all the oil (1 cup!) in the mashed potatoes! I only added 1 tablespoon of the oil, for the taste/texture, but adding it all in would be horrible! Same for the Cauliflower au Gratin, where she pours melted butter on top of the topping cheese/crumbs mix. The grating browns well without the butter, and the dish is heavy enough as is, not to add more fat to it!

I still gave this book a 5 because the receipes are very French, and if you don't put as much butter or oil as recommended, they turn out very good!

This cookbook makes it possible to prepare (or at least approximate) French dishes that will impress you and your family and friends. While the recipes sometimes rely on prepared foods to save you some time, the results are always pleasing. One of the seafood dishes has become a staple of dinner parties at our house. And my daughter now loves "palmiers," or elephant ear cookies, which I would never have attempted to make from scratch. Clear instructions and useful (not just pretty) illustrations make this cookbook ideal for beginners.

As an American who lived in Paris, I truly appreciate both the wonderful recipes and the narrative sections. The pictures are beautiful and the dishes are truly French but with that fantastic Ina Garten flair. She's done it again!
