As a first-time mother (at the age of 43) I thought I was prepared for everything. Everyone said not to expect to sleep much after having a baby. So when our daughter was 4 weeks old, and my sister-in-law told me about a book on sleep that would get us all more sleep, I thought, why didn't someone tell me about this sooner? Unfortunately, the book was Ezzo's Baby Wise and after reading it and trying it's advice for a few days I felt terrible about what I was putting my baby through for the sake of a few minutes of sleep.
Fortunately, it got me to do some research, and after a week of reading a few more books on the subject (what else did I have to do when I wasn't sleeping) I luckily came upon this one! After just 2 days, she was sleeping for hours and hours at a time, and after a week, she was sleeping for at least 6 hours at night. She is now 16 weeks old and has been sleeping from 7:45pm straight through to 6:15am without waking up for a feeding since she was 12 weeks old.
The best advice in the book? The two-hour awake window. When she was 5 weeks old, we learned she needed to go to sleep after only one hour of wakefulness. She is now only able to stay awake for no more than 1.5 hours without getting overtired.
Other books told you to put your baby to bed when they were tired, but didn't tell you how to know when they were tired. Turns out that what most of us think are the signs of a tired baby are signs that they are actually overtired. Once we learned what to look for, she fell asleep easily. She goes to bed when she's awake, with a smile on her face, and falls asleep in about 2-5 minutes without crying!
Some comments about other reviews: this book is very easy to read and understand. It covers various age groups and issues you may encounter with each phase. One person said the author contradicted himself, but she is mistaken. She was taking various pieces of advice out of context. What is right for a baby of 2 months old, is not the same advice he would give for a baby of 6 months old, and vice versa. Also, The person who wrote in her review about the two-hour nap was misquoting the author. His advice is that babies should be awake, not napping, for no longer than two hours. He does not limit nap times (at least not for young babies.)
Finally, I would like to note a few things I wondered when reading others reviews: First, I went back to work when she was 9 weeks old and she is in a daycare center. They follow her nap schedule perfectly and are also able to tell when she is ready to go down. She sleeps longer than all the other babies and never cries. Second, I nurse her. (Expressed milk during the day.) I also give her a bottle of formula before bed at night so I can get another feeding in a bottle for her. The author is an advocate of breastfeeding, but not a die-hard and made me feel very comfortable having made this decision. Third, she slept in a bassinet in our room until she was 13 weeks old (we didn't feel comfortable with co-sleeping, which he is all for but does not push) when we moved her to her crib in her room. She made the transition seemlessly!
We have a very happy and healthy baby who is learning things so quickly and gaining weight at a normal rate (two things I wondered how she would do if she was sleeping all the time.) I recommend that all parents read this book. I can't imagine how our lives would be without it! |
