For any child fortunate enough to have this generous book...the kings and heroes of ancient legend will remain forever matter-of-fact; the pictures interpret the text literally and are full of detail and witty observation.

The drawings...are excellent and excitingly evocative.

I teach fourth grade at a public school in Manhattan. I recently used D"Aulaires Book of Greek Myths to help teach a study of the Odyssey. As gods and godesses came up in the Odyssey, I used this book to give the background of each character. The children loved this book and begged me to continue reading from it after the study was completed. I found it extremely accessible and highly engaging.

This book is so good. I think when I was a kid I read it 20 million times (around age 6) and then again recently just browsing through it I realize it is still amazing. The pictures are great, and I really really don't think there is a better greek mythology book, as this has stories from minor gods as well, plus the first page has a chart showing how the gods are related. Greek mythology popped up again and again in school, and I was really then to have read it to. Every parent should give their child this book.

I first became enthralled with Greek Mythology when I was 6 years old, after hearing my uncle tell me about it.

I received this book as a present in 1995 during my second grade, and read it through and through multiple times...It was left to dust on my bookshelf for years until the summer after I finished 9th grade. I was required to read a collection of greek myths for my incoming sophomore Honors Humanities class. I knew I had a great book already, and while I had fun reading this book, my friends labored through pictureless novels of 400 pages+. And yet I got the highest grade on our quiz on our reading during the first day of school.

This is not only an excellent overview of Greek Mythology it is a work of art. A joy! The illustrations in and of themselves are truly amazing and one really has to see them as they are both unique and beautiful. This would be a great gift for any child. Yet although it is a children's book it is not "dumbed down" and many adults may want to purchase it as a reference and for its sheer beauty.

    Highly recommended.

Yes, I read this in elementary, and, unlike what Paula Morrow says, I loved it as a kid. It's a good read for youngsters and helps them out later scholatically when they need to know about the Greek pantheon. Any class of English lit, Latin, History, etc. will have allusions to them. Yes, some day they should read Bulfinch's to get the full story-fuller, anyway-but this is a great introduction. If you're thinking of setting Bulfinch's Mythology, 300-500 pp, in front of a grade-schooler, you have got to be out of your mind.

    This one's for the kids.

The incredibly colorful illustrations and easy-to-understand language allow this book to relate the story of Zeus and his raucous and dysfunctional family. Each god gets their own chapter, and their most important myths are explained.

Again, if you're looking for a more-in-depth title, Bulfinch is the way to go. If you're looking for a neat book on myths to share with your kid or young friend, this would be it.

My 5th grade teacher gave this book of myths to me as a present. Ever since I read the book and saw the illustrations, I have treasured this book. For a long time I then kept it safely locked in my cupboard. I never actually had time to look back again at the magnificent drawings and pictures. Now that I am in 8th grade though, I thought I might as well read the inspiring stories all over again and again I enjoyed it tremendously.

For me, it is one of the most remarkable books ever written. It is not only enjoyable but a good learning experience as well. I have learned so much from reading just these few stories that I now know more about Greek mythology than my grandfather does.

This book is almost like an encyclopedia only meant for myths and legends. I recommend this book for adolescents as well as adults. Children will be able to understand the stories very clearly once they get a hold of this book. In my opinion, the illustrations in this book were so vivid you could almost understand the stories without any text.

In conclusion, I truly believe that D'Aulaire's Greek Book of Myths is one of greatest books ever written and illustrated. As the years go by, I will return to this book once again and read it all over again.

This book has been in print for at least 40 years. It was my introduction to Greek mythology when I was in elementary school in the early 60s. Now, a very educated middle aged man who has read Homer, Hesiod, Ovid, the Athenian playwrights, and all the great literature based on the mythology, I can tell you that 75% of my basic knowledge of these myths still comes from my devouring, re-reading, absorbing D'Aulaire in what can only be called a child's fantasy paradise. I have no children, but if I did and could gift them as I was gifted, I would count myself a successful parent if I did nothing more than introduce them to this book. The gorgeous illustrations are still burned in my memory. How any team of writers could depict Kronos devouring his children, Arachne being transformed into a spider, and so forth, and not make it frightening to a small child-well, this book is a miracle. Check it out and may your family cherish it.

I checked this book out of the library dozens of times as a child. The stories and intrigue of the Greek pantheon, combined with the outstanding illustrations, make this book a must-read for any child (or adult) with more than a passing interest in history, or religion or mythology. To this day, not having seen the book in nearly 20 years, I can recall vividly the illustration of Argus with his hundred eyes, standing in Hera's chamber. Or Athena, springing fully formed from Zeus' head. Another thing I like is that the authors didn't sugarcoat any of the Greek myths, which were as red in tooth and claw as Nature herself. To me, that would have destroyed the impact and power of these stories. This book is truly a classic of kids' literature.
