One of the greatest features of this book is its wonderful organization. It begins at the beginning (Gaia and Uranus), chronicles the Titans, the major Olympian gods, "minor" gods, and heroes. The stories flow chronologically and the authors make many references back to earlier sections without any confusion.
The stories are told at a beginner level but without a feeling that a lot is missing from them as can happen in Edith Hamilton's Mythology. The art is appealing and nervous parents will be pleased to know that the pictures are at an appropriate level for young people. Also som of the more risque sections are dealt with without omitting important information. In the story of Perseus, Zeus does the Golden shower of light transformation to appear in Danae's room and she becomes his bride. Cute isn't it?

Ingri and Edgar D'Aulaire were among the first authors to present children's biographies in a shorter, fully illustrated format accessible to younger readers. They received the Caldecott Medal for their biography of Abraham Lincoln and also wrote and illustrated the histories of other famous Americans. But their most notable work may be the excellent collection of Greek myths-D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths.

This notable work was first published in 1962, and still a respected standard today. The entire world of the Greek gods is laid out in an orderly fashion, from the oldest stories of Mother Earth and the Titans to Zeus and his family, and on to the minor gods and the mortal descendants of Zeus. All the stories are here, including Pandora's box, King Midas, Oedipus, Jason and the Golden Fleece, and the transition from Greek gods to Roman ones. Illustrations enhance almost every page, many in color, some in black and white, and some in black on tan, which lends an ancient air. The stories themselves are simply written, with the text set off by wide borders of white space. A thorough index is appended, defining each god or goddess as well as locating their stories within the collection. From Achilles to Zeus, a book to savor and save for future generations.

For any child fortunate enough to have this generous book...the kings and heroes of ancient legend will remain forever matter-of-fact; the pictures interpret the text literally and are full of detail and witty observation. |

I teach fourth grade at a public school in Manhattan. I recently used D"Aulaires Book of Greek Myths to help teach a study of the Odyssey. As gods and godesses came up in the Odyssey, I used this book to give the background of each character. The children loved this book and begged me to continue reading from it after the study was completed. I found it extremely accessible and highly engaging.

This book is so good. I think when I was a kid I read it 20 million times (around age 6) and then again recently just browsing through it I realize it is still amazing. The pictures are great, and I really really don't think there is a better greek mythology book, as this has stories from minor gods as well, plus the first page has a chart showing how the gods are related. Greek mythology popped up again and again in school, and I was really then to have read it to. Every parent should give their child this book.
