This was a very interesting book. It is a great book for any young adult who loves basketball. Greg Harris, known as Slam, must change as a person off the court so that he can have game with him on and off the court. This book is a page turner and you won't want to put it down. This is a highly recommended book!

In Slam by Walter Dean Myers, a sixteen year old boy named Greg "Slam" Harris is a basketball star that just moved into a different school, and is having a rough time balancing school work and basketball. He finds out that life in Harlem isn't about basketball all of the time. He lives with his mom, dad, and little brother Derek. Greg goes through a lot with his girlfriend Mtisha, and best friend Ice, but things start to heat up when Mtisha tells Greg a dirty little secret that could hurt him for life. I like how Myers express' the character's feeling so you can relate how they are feeling. The book stars out happy and then turns into a thrilling life experience. Slam is for ages 11&up, because it shows you how life goes for teens, and that there is no shortcut through life you just have to take it how it is.

I thought that this book was one of the best books that I have ever read before. It told the story of a very talented basketball player who is just having to do with life and everything that comes with it. I really liked how when he came to his new school, nobody really gave him any respect, and after his first game, everyone started to like him and compliment him and everything. Plus, the book kind of pulls you into it and makes everything feel real to you. Overall, this book is great and I loved it.

Slam! By Walter Dean Meyers is a very good book. If you like basketball and you want to read a good book, this is a definite pick. The book starts off in Greg "Slam" Harris's neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. Slam was in love with the game ever since he first touched a basketball. Growing up with his close friend Benny "Ice" Reese, they would play basketball together every chance they could. Growing up only made more difficult for them to keep hanging out with each other. Also the fact that Slam would no longer be attending the same school as Ice, would mean that one day they would play ball against each other. On a more important subject, Slam was not doing so well in school. When he was on the court, he felt as if nobody could touch him. He felt unstoppable and he was. After joining the Latimer High School team, he met Ducky, which would become his new friend. Slam's coach would never start him and this started to tick him off. Slam dealt with it and he liked it, but at the same time he didn't like that fact that the coach only put him in so he could win the game. Slam had many things on his mind such as, Mtisha, the girl he wanted to be with; his grandma, she had cancer and was not doing so well; school, he really needed to start doing well or he wouldn't be playing basketball at all; and most of all, the basketball team. His basketball team had beaten every team, but Trinity and Carver. Carver was the team that Ice was on. Finally the time came and Slam and Ice met on the court. The tip went up...To find out who won the game and went on o the championship you have to read the book.

I thought Slam was an excellent book. The story goes into such great detail, that I could put myself in the book. I felt like I was in the crowd watching Slam play basketball. This book introduced me to a teenager's life in Harlem. It made me stop and think how lucky I am not to have the added pressures of the inner city life. Slam was an inspiration to me. He doesn't give into the pressure around him even though he is pushed very hard. My favorite part of the book is when Slam realizes his attitude is his biggest enemy. He started to improve himself as a person. I recommend "Slam" to anyone over the age of 12.

Finally a book since The Outsiders that my son wanted to read. An urban story dealing with real coming of age issues. A great book for boys who don't find much to relate to in fiction or those who are interested in life outside their own small worlds. This is the best book I've read since picking up my daughter's copy of Because of Winn Dixie.

Slam Harris is the star player at Latimer high school. He has got a lot of skills on the basketball court, and wants to get a scholarship for playing college basketball. There are two things stopping him from his dream, his attitude and his grades. When his mind isn't on basketball (which isn't very often) it's on his girl Mtisha. The climax of the book is when he has to play his best friend "Ice's" team carver in a semifinal game. Latimer doesn't have much of a chance but they work as a team and pull it off and win. I would strongly recommend this book to others. I found it hard to put down once I started reading it. If you’re into basketball you will fall in love with this book. I hope you will give Slam! A try.
