"Impossible is nothing!" What a great statement! You can do just about anything in life if you put your mind to it.
Through an adventurous world of Slam, he once decided he would give up something he really loved and was good at. On the basketball court, 17-year-old Greg "Slam" Harris is in control. His disciplined body does what he tells it, the ball becomes an extension of his arms, and his powerful legs allow him to elevate above the chaos at ground level. Off the court, however, order is elusive and elevation rarely possible: his grandmother is in the hospital, possibly dying; he has trouble fitting in at the predominantly white high school he attends; his grades are sinking ever lower; and his best friend from the neighborhood may be dealing crack. Mayers's descriptions of Slam on the court, feeling the ball's grain on his fingertips as his hands clear the rim, use crisp details, not flowery language, to achieve their muscular poetry, and Myers is equally vivid in relating the torment Slam feels as he stares at a page of indecipherable algebra formulas. Although Myers's message about one's responsibility for making life's hard choices occasionally feels a bit forced, rather than growing naturally from the story, he wisely avoids the heavily inspirational, Rocky-style finale common to so many sports novels. "Sometimes I think you guys are just heartbreaks waiting to happen," Slam's girlfriend Mtisha tells him at the end, providing a sobering coda to this admirably realistic coming-of-age novel
Slam was a great Realistic fiction (sports) book that is a great book not for basketball players only. It uses basketball language, so if you like sports and like books that are exciting somewhat romantic and realistic then this is the perfect book for you. Through all the battles and conflicts that Slam faced, he still managed to get by and successfully gets what he wanted. Slam never gave up and continued to try hard. Even though the conflicts sometimes pulled him down, he got right back up and continued his journey through life.
By not giving up hope and not giving up you will successfully reach your goal. You may face some obstacles but if you keep trying, then impossible is nothing when you want to reach your goal. Slam teaches the reader to do their best and never give up. This book is thriller and adventurous, and is recommended to anyone, especially sports fanatics.

Seventeen-year-old Greg "Slam" Harris can do it all on the basketball court. He's seen ballplayers come and go, and he knows he could be one of the lucky ones. Maybe he'll make it to the top. Or maybe he'll stumble along the way. Slam's grades aren't that hot. And when his teachers jam his troubles in his face, he blows up. Slam never doubted himself on the court until he found himself going one-on-one with his own future, and he didn't have the ball.

In Slam by Walter Dean Myers, a sixteen year old boy named Greg "Slam" Harris is a basketball star that just moved into a different school, and is having a rough time balancing school work and basketball. He finds out that life in Harlem isn't about basketball all of the time. He lives with his mom, dad, and little brother Derek. Greg goes through a lot with his girlfriend Mtisha, and best friend Ice, but things start to heat up when Mtisha tells Greg a dirty little secret that could hurt him for life. I like how Myers express' the character's feeling so you can relate how they are feeling. The book stars out happy and then turns into a thrilling life experience. Slam is for ages 11&up, because it shows you how life goes for teens, and that there is no shortcut through life you just have to take it how it is. |

I thought that this book was one of the best books that I have ever read before. It told the story of a very talented basketball player who is just having to do with life and everything that comes with it. I really liked how when he came to his new school, nobody really gave him any respect, and after his first game, everyone started to like him and compliment him and everything. Plus, the book kind of pulls you into it and makes everything feel real to you. Overall, this book is great and I loved it. |
