If you rely on Powerpoint-like presentation in your work, get Cliff Atkinson's Beyond Bullet Points. I had determined that improving my company's presentations had potentially very high returns so I started poking around the net and Amazon for resources to help. At first, I struck out with books that were supposed to improve presentations, but ended up being guides on technically how to use Powerpoint. That was NOT what I was looking for.

Beyond Bullet Points is very different. It is a philosophy about creating presentations whose purpose is to communicate a story, not dump information. Frankly, it was not intuitive for me so I had to decide to just trust that it would work. When I was about ¾ finished, I started to really "feel" what I was doing. And, to my surprise, the most unlikely people really liked the result.

In a world where most business and how-to books are nothing more that restating what you already know (or, what you know isn't true), this one is an exception. I highly recommend it!

At last a book that recognizes that PowerPoint is not the presentation. If all your information is on the slides, who needs you as a presenter? In easy step-by-step fashion, Atkinson explains how to use Hollywood screenwriting techniques to tell a story. PowerPoint is a powerful software package, but it is NOT the presentation. This is the first book I've seen (and I've been looking) that tells how to use the software to enhance an oral presentation. A great, easy to follow guide to putting together a memorable presentation. I teach communications at a university and I am recommending this book to all my students and everybody I know who gives presentations.

This book is simply incredible. I used it as a trial lawyer to kick my powerpoint presentation up a notch. It actually send the presentation through the roof!

I'm now Cliff Atkinson's biggest fan!

Atkinson is onto something that many of us learned years ago: Power Point is much more than a fancy overhead! More than that, Power Point is about powerfully communicating your point in story fashion using audio, visual, sound bites, songs, movies, and background graphics to create a mood, tell a story, and motivate to action.

Atkinson's step-by-step method along with his underlying philosophy can be used by the novice, by the bullet-addicted, and by the pro, and all can benefit from his templates.

I never really thought about the format of PowerPoint presentations. PowerPoint seems to be designed around presentations that are bulleted lists of things. When I give a quarterly report, my presentation looks just about like those of the other managers. We may use different wall paper or select different styles from those built into PowerPoint but that's all. Let's face it, my slides look like the before in his before and after presentations.

My next surprise was that this fellow can make PowerPoint do things that I never knew could be done at all. I'm going to put some of his techniques into a presentation that I'm just beginning that will be delivered to our best customers and prospects. What he says is not difficult to do, it's just a different way of thinking about how to make a presentation. Very interesting.

This book is the most pragmatic book on developing presentations, not just PowerPoint presos. It borrows from the craft of Hollywood that knows how to capture our attention, keep us entertained and influence us in more ways than we realize. The book is based on proven techniques used by the greatest storytellers for centuries and the author has boiled this down into a few principles that are easy to remember and use.

I have already employed the techniques and I see a huge difference; my colleagues say so! Get this book and you will be guided to think a lot more critically about your audience, your message and more importantly your desired outcome. The Word template provided at the author's website is an awesome power tool, once you understand the concepts.
