Every chapter of this book is paradigm-shifting. You will literally be finding yourself finding real-world examples of the behavior that he describes around you. The black redneck part of the title comes from the fact (and when you see the voluminous footnoted documentation, you will know that he backs ups his claims) that modern "urban" black culture comes directly from the white trash areas of the British Isles, and has such traits as an exaggerated need for respect and status, regardless of consequences, or a lack of respect for law, which you immediately notice when the Terrell Owens supension comes up or the latest rapper starts declaring what a thug he is.

He also persuasively proves that people hate Jews because they are middleman minorities, who retail the products made by the self-righteous producers (see farmers and coal miners), or make money through financial transactions. What is revelatory is that there are many such middleman minorities throughout the world, who have suffered similiar treatment as the Jews, such as the Armenians.

Another well thought-out hypothesis is that Western imperialism, Britain especially, is solely responsible for the extinction of the institution of slavery through the majority of the globe. Western civilation is the pioneer that first decided slavery was wrong, led by the religious right of its time.

The last section proves that liberals care more about esoteric ideas of equality than actually educating black children.

The title refers to the fact that what liberals call "authentic black culture" is actually a relic of a highly disfunctional white southern redneck culture that existed even in pre-Independence America. This in turn came from the regions in Britain they immigrated from.

There is a most interesting chapter on the history of Germans, how certain geographical and historical features characterise them around the world. Also how they were loyal to German culture of their locality not to the new country of Germany that had not existed.

Another chapter on Jews and other middleman minorities explains many features they had in common. They were resented as "parasites" although they had a vital economic role, as shown by the collapse of the economies of countries that expelled them.

The chapter on slavery is probably the most important. Sowell documents that slavery has been ubiquitous throughout all cultures, and usually had nothing to do with race. Indeed, the word "slave" comes from the Caucasian race of the Slavs. And black Africans were most often enslaved by other black Africans. Indeed, Europeans would die of tropical diseases if they ventured into the African interior, so they had to use Africans to gather slaves.

But it was only western Europe that ever abolished slavery. Indeed, it was the "religious right" like Wilberforce who campaigned against slavery. And "British imperialism" that enforced the ban by using naval might to overpower slaver ships of other nations.

The book contains several chapters which are actually rather independent articles, having almost no references to each other and can be read separately. They cover wide range of subjects such as: southern redneck culture accepted by some of today's blacks, and it's roots; reasons of hatred against and persecution of so-called middleman minorities, such as Jews, Armenians, Chinese in Asia, etc., history of slavery around the world, and how did it end; history of black education in US, and others. Each article is very balanced, gives a broad historical prospective, and good level of understanding of problems, and most of them are totally eye opening because of dispelling of well-entrenched myths. This is one of a small number of books which one should read if he wants to be a smarter person.

I am a retired educator and I wish that I had read something like this book many years ago. You will not be disappointed.

This is the most inclusive book I've read about this the history of slavery and anti-semitism. It goes back hundreds of years and to other countries (not just the U.S.) where slavery existed. He points out that slavery existed long before the U.S. was a country and - contrary to liberal rants - in many non-Western countries. Actually, the U.S. was the first country to begin outlawing slavery and has used it's influence in the world to outlaw it in other countries. He also points out that more blacks sold blacks into slavery than white people ever did.

His discussion about the prosperity of Jews and the resultant anti-semitism was the best I've ever read. I learned more in this book than I did in any history class in high school or college!

Anyone wants to better understand the people around him absolutely has to read this book. I think this book changed my thought patterns more than anything I have ever read. I can't remember the last time I read a book that made me go around reading passages to those around me.

It puts things so into focus that I can't believe it. There is so much here that is fascinating history, and that makes me understand so much more about the people I meet everyday, and why things are the way they are. I am truly a better man for reading this book.
  • Gibson (MSL quote), USA   <2007-06-11 00:00>

Dr. Sowell penetrates the fog that is sprayed out by today's victim industry. In the title essay, he argues that much of what ails contemporary ghetto blacks can be traced to the lessons they and their forebears learned from the southern rednecks, who are descended either literally or culturally from brutish subcultures of northern England.

Sowell's reasoning is tight, dispassionate, and dense with citations. So compelling is this reasoning that his moral conclusions are inescapable.

Dr Sowell here collects a set of essays that cover several inter-related topics. He has has taken issues that have occupied him for decades and has made his key findings understandable for the general reader. He has rethought some of his conclusions in earlier volumes and brought up to date the references for the articles. For example the essay "The Real History of Slavery" is an excellent summation of his previous books that discuss slavery and how it was ended. Highly recommended.
