"By cheering on counterproductive attitudes, making excuses for self-defeating behavior, and promoting the belief that "racism" accounts for most of blacks' problems, white intellectuals serve their own psychic, ideological, and political interests. They are the kinds of friends who can do more harm than enemies." ...
This collection of six papers by Sowell unflinchingly addresses charged issues like African American culture, persecution of Jews and other minority groups, slavery, German history, and U.S. education. The text is methodical and logical, unyieldingly leading the reader through common misconceptions by contemporary academics and politicians and surfacing relevant data to each topic.
In his thesis regarding the history of slavery, he notes that it was the Western civilization itself that took a stand against slavery around the world, and spent a huge amount of time and effort in order to push this ideology to free slaves from South America into Africa and throughout the world. He specifically notes that Britain was the primary force behind this movement. The Arab region and Africa both ignored emancipation of their slaves and continued to drive the slavery racket, even under pressure from Western nations. He also brings to light the fact that America was the only country that uses the black/white-slavery issue as a political based on race, even though slavery wasn't constrained to one race in other countries as well. Arabs enslaved Europeans, Asians enslaved other Asians. This happened throughout the world, and still does in some parts of Africa.
In the chapter 'Are Jews Generic' he makes the case clear that it's not just Jews that are consistently lashed out at, but there are other ethnic groups just like Jews that are condemned not because of who they are, but because of how successful they are when immigrating into new societies to flourish and expand their family businesses. Being that some parts of the primary society at hand lag behind in economic terms, they tend to take their anger out on the small segments of society that move in and become middlemen by buying and selling goods in order to become successful from nothing. Envy drives the force of hatred among different types of ethnic groups, whether it be the Armenians, Jews, tribes from Indonesia, Asians, etc.
Overall a worthwhile read. Social progressives and social conservatives will both find some of their treasured thinking deflated and the enlightened among readers will find their horizons widened. - From quoting Blake Posey

From the publisher
In a series of long essays, Black Rednecks and White Liberals presents an in-depth look at many of the long-prevailing assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on not only the trendy intellectuals of our times but also such historic interpreters of American life as Alexis de Tocqueville and Frederick Law Olmsted. Black Rednecks and White Liberals deftly challenges dogma and dispels clichés that have long clung to topics involving race, ethnicity and culture.

Every chapter of this book is paradigm-shifting. You will literally be finding yourself finding real-world examples of the behavior that he describes around you. The black redneck part of the title comes from the fact (and when you see the voluminous footnoted documentation, you will know that he backs ups his claims) that modern "urban" black culture comes directly from the white trash areas of the British Isles, and has such traits as an exaggerated need for respect and status, regardless of consequences, or a lack of respect for law, which you immediately notice when the Terrell Owens supension comes up or the latest rapper starts declaring what a thug he is.
He also persuasively proves that people hate Jews because they are middleman minorities, who retail the products made by the self-righteous producers (see farmers and coal miners), or make money through financial transactions. What is revelatory is that there are many such middleman minorities throughout the world, who have suffered similiar treatment as the Jews, such as the Armenians.
Another well thought-out hypothesis is that Western imperialism, Britain especially, is solely responsible for the extinction of the institution of slavery through the majority of the globe. Western civilation is the pioneer that first decided slavery was wrong, led by the religious right of its time.
The last section proves that liberals care more about esoteric ideas of equality than actually educating black children. |

The title refers to the fact that what liberals call "authentic black culture" is actually a relic of a highly disfunctional white southern redneck culture that existed even in pre-Independence America. This in turn came from the regions in Britain they immigrated from.
There is a most interesting chapter on the history of Germans, how certain geographical and historical features characterise them around the world. Also how they were loyal to German culture of their locality not to the new country of Germany that had not existed.
Another chapter on Jews and other middleman minorities explains many features they had in common. They were resented as "parasites" although they had a vital economic role, as shown by the collapse of the economies of countries that expelled them.
The chapter on slavery is probably the most important. Sowell documents that slavery has been ubiquitous throughout all cultures, and usually had nothing to do with race. Indeed, the word "slave" comes from the Caucasian race of the Slavs. And black Africans were most often enslaved by other black Africans. Indeed, Europeans would die of tropical diseases if they ventured into the African interior, so they had to use Africans to gather slaves.
But it was only western Europe that ever abolished slavery. Indeed, it was the "religious right" like Wilberforce who campaigned against slavery. And "British imperialism" that enforced the ban by using naval might to overpower slaver ships of other nations. |

The book contains several chapters which are actually rather independent articles, having almost no references to each other and can be read separately. They cover wide range of subjects such as: southern redneck culture accepted by some of today's blacks, and it's roots; reasons of hatred against and persecution of so-called middleman minorities, such as Jews, Armenians, Chinese in Asia, etc., history of slavery around the world, and how did it end; history of black education in US, and others. Each article is very balanced, gives a broad historical prospective, and good level of understanding of problems, and most of them are totally eye opening because of dispelling of well-entrenched myths. This is one of a small number of books which one should read if he wants to be a smarter person. |
