I'm a naturally shy person and I've always hated the concept of "networking." Everyone I know that practices it in the commonly accepted sense is a complete jerk. This book, however, addresses the true power behind networking; building actual relationships. I would probably give the book 4.5 stars, since too much of it is devoted to name dropping, but this small flaw does not detract from the value of the book. Mr. Ferrazzi takes the approach of building meaningful relationships with others, even when time is short. He doesn't advocate carpet bombing a room with your business cards or hanging out with people you despise as a means of getting ahead. I appreciate the fact that the author came from humble beginnings and was able to reach such heights in the world of business. There are several practical approaches that are discussed in this book that can be of help to both extroverts and the relatively introverted.
  • Ilya (MSL quote), USA   <2007-06-29 00:00>

I'll be honest, even though I chose this book myself I was very skeptical when I first approached it - there is something in the title that challenged my status quo. I am introvert and our society tends to value extraverted nature; I was afraid that this book would repeat this extraversion mantra all over again, and I couldn't have been more wrong, what I found was volumes of invaluable advice!

Keith Ferrazzi is most definitely an extrovert of the most extreme kind, but his philosophy is invaluable to both camps - he argues for building relationships, not contacts. It is not a quid pro quo process, nor a one way street, it's going out of your way to expand your own horizons and to appreciate other people - relationships are about what you give. Charm, as he points out, is simply being yourself. You need to have a dream, you need to be audacious at times, you need to add value to everything you do, you do need to position yourself and have a unique point of view. In the end, what else could we wish for if not having a job we love with people who know us for who we really are - if that is what networking is all about, then count me in!

Not even two weeks after I've read this book, I found myself applying these principles in my own life, and guess what, it works! It's a great book, I think everyone will take a different lesson from it, and I would give it six stars if I could.

This book was recommended to me by people helping me with a job search. I would read a few pages and then put it down so offended by the self serving narcissicm of the story I could not read on. After a few days I would pick it back up again and read some of the smartest and insightful information I've ever found. I read to the point of Mr. Ferrazzi's divorce and I realizied that all of this information was useless if he could not maintain the one relationship that really mattered. I put the book down for several weeks resolved not to read again, he had lost credibility with me. Then I began again and read idea after idea I used the very day I read them to enhance my job search and my relationships with people I interact with for business. Their is no doubt, my future is brighter because of reading this book.

If you want to build a network of personal and business relations to help you succeed, have friends and be happy take a dose of this book and "How to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie. To me, these are the two seminal books on how to network, how to truly appreciate your fellow human beings, and how to exercise that network for the benefit of those around you and your own ultimate success.
  • Smith (MSL quote), USA   <2007-06-29 00:00>

This book is incredible! I read through the book in less than 2 days and then went back and read it again at a slower pace to simply absorb the information presented. Keith does an outstanding job of highlighting the importance of networking and reaching out to help others. Many of us want to network and don't know how and this book offers the solution. Still, there are many others that already have a large network in place but don't realize it and Keith illustrates the necessity to reach out and ask for help when you need it. This book is very motivating and enlightening. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in expanding their network or making the most of the network they have in place.
  • Gian (MSL quote), USA   <2007-06-29 00:00>

The title of this book is what captured my attention. The passion with which it was written captured my enthusiasm. The author, Keith Ferrazzi, is a marketing expert and networking fanatic. If you only do half of the things that he does in this book, you will dramatically increase your networking skills. The underlying message, and a repetitive theme of this book, is that networking is not about getting; it's about giving - giving people what they need to succeed. In doing so, he believes that you build solid relationships that will be both beneficial and rewarding. He doesn't just give advice, he gives you detailed instruction while offering real-life examples of how he befriended prominent, well-respected and accomplished business leaders in the process. Many of these relationships were instigated, enhanced, or solidified over a meal - during which time he could fervently express his hunger to help another succeed; thus the creation of the title. It's a great concept, a winning formula and the best book I've ever read on networking. Buy it today!
