I did seminar and workshop on entrepreneruship and creativity and have read probably about 20 books on creativity. And i have to admit this is the BEST BOOK on creativity. this is THE CLASSIC book on the subject. The author hs just written a new book (EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED) but this onw is WAY SUPERIOR and BETTER.
This is an old book but still freash to read and delighting to enjoy. The samples and the materials are easy to read yet very2 strong and useful.
I gave away this books to friends who want to learn more about creativity and want to change his/her attitude toward life.
Most people know that creativity is one of the key element of success yet so few take action of any sort to do something about it. So do yourself a favor, go and buy this book, read, and start think about it in your daily life. it will be beneficial for your future success and happiness. |

In the mid 80's we were looking for books to give to all the managers at an upcoming management conference. I saw this book and knew right away this was a top book. To top it off it was a book that was more likely to be read than others. I called it a "bathroom book", easily read in short time frames.
This book was packed with all the info that we were trying to get across to the management team at the time. Brainstorming, teambuilding, and just plain creative thinking and this book gives you more ways of finding a different way of looking at situations than you would ever think of on your own.
Now some 12 years later I find myself working with the, "Odyssey of the Mind" program and school age people instead of corporate managers. The "Whack on the Side of the Head", in hand to help our future leaders, inventors and innovators, to help them solve their long term & spontaneous problems. The caricatures help to draw the kids into the message, as well as the adults.
Roger Von Oech is a genius.
I love this book so much that I am personally on my 6th copy of this book, most lost to friends who have borrowed and love it so much I just gave it to them. My latest copies have come with "The Whack Pack", and these cards are a must for you desk when you are stuck and can't think of a new angle on something. |

Roger's classic book on creativity belongs on everyone's bookshelf. I first read an earlier edition of this book when I was responsible for running a division of a Fortune 500 company. Some of the ideas we developed were the direct result of techniques that Roger shares in his book... the result... a new business concept that grew into a $50 million division in two years.
The book (and related card-deck) is well-researched, written, and the illustrations are wonderful. If you are looking for a book that will whack you (or your organization) into new ways of thinking, order "Whack" today.
This book was a seed that inspired me to explore creativity in depth and to write Aha! - 10 Ways To Free Your Creative Spirit and Find Your Great Ideas. It is wonderful to have had a seminal work like Roger's as a springboard. |

I first came across Roger Von Oech when I was a trainer - training other leaders - in a worldwide youth organisation. The ability to think outside the square is important in any lifepath and Von Oech is easy to dip in and out of to get prompted in another direction when life the way ahead looks too narrow.
After borrowing them from libraries many times over the years I now own my own copy of both this and A Kick in the Seat of the Pants, also by Von Oech. I use them frequently and highly recommend them both. |

My thinking had become stale in the past six months, and I was unable to think of fresh approaches to some pressing work problems. I mentioned this to my sister, and she lent me her dog-earred copy of Whack. I loved the author's breezy style and practical ideas. I have since bought two more copies, one for myself and another for a friend at work. I recommend Whack as a good way to open your thinking. |

Approximately twenty years ago, this book was the text for a weeklong faculty development seminar that I was a part of. Best seminar I ever attended. It was fun to read and we acted out various skits suggested by the text. Some problems can be solved by simply doing more of what you were doing or being more forceful in doing it. However, the really difficult ones that are the key to success generally cannot be solved using "conventional" means. That is why they are problems and why the solution has so many rewards.
The author presents a refreshing look at how we tackle problems, how the parameters are defined and set. He understands that simple solutions sometimes exist, but seeing them is difficult because we are not conditioned to think or see that way. Only by stepping back, or perhaps by climbing up and looking down, can we see a solution to a problem. The author cannot step back or climb the ladder for you, but he does strongly encourage you to consider unusual ways of approaching problems. |

I think that instead of diplomas, high schools and universities should provide exiting graduates with a copy of this book. This short book is worth every penny. It simply makes you think about problems and solutions from a totally new perspective. When I finished the book, I gave it to my teenager. He loved it too. Read it! |

I found this book quite helpful. I originally bought the book to use in developing computer software and to develop some ideas for software usability. Software development is an area where people tend to avoid the idea of being creative, so books on creativity and software are few and far between. The techniques presented in this book are generic, and can be applied to many different situations, so I have found them helpful in other areas of my life besides software development.
As the title of the book suggests, the writing style of author is very laid back. I have read other books on creativity that are a little more formal, but there content was no more relevant than the content of this book. It is quite readable, and I will use it as a reference for a long time. |
