  • Richard N. Bolles, author, What Color Is Your Parachute? (MSL quote), USA   <2007-10-18 00:00>

    This is an immensely helpful book, with the ancient wisdom of recruiters,?and the up-to-date?insights of two skilled Internet surfers. If you're job-hunting, you'll be grateful to learn the tips and tricks of these two seasoned veterans. I learned a lot myself.

    I have been an apprentice, a company president, and a CEO. No other single source provides a more contemporary and embracing job search bible. This book offers literally hundreds of little known insider tips, strategies, out-of-the-box success stories, hands-on exercises, and pearls of wisdom. Many readers will hear the words, 'You're Hired' due to David Perry and Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters.

    Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters is an absolutely 'right on' book for today's job market. It not only has great job search tips but it takes you into the electronic job search system better than anything I've seen written to date.

    It is an understatement to say that the number of books on job hunting is overwhelming. In addition, there is plenty of free information on the Web for job hunters including sample resumes and cover letters. On the surface, this wealth of information seems to be a good thing. However, ask yourself, "How much of this information is a variation of standard approaches to job hunting". You know - write a chronological resume, a bland cover letter, and send both to an unknown hiring manager or HR person. More often than not, you are lucky to receive an automated e-mail acknowledging the receipt of your resume and cover letter. If you find all this fruitless and tiresome, then Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters is the book for you.

    This book looks at job hunting in an radically new way - the guerilla way. Its subtitle "400 Unconventional Tips, Tricks, and Tactics for Landing Your Dream Job" sums up the book nicely. The book is divided into four parts:
    A discussion of the guerrilla frame of mind;
    An inventory of weapons such as resume makeovers, ideas for cover letters, and PR strategies for your guerrilla campaign;
    A description of tactics for landing a job including networking and cold calling; and,
    A discussion of guerrilla campaigning with examples and techniques for effective interviewing and navigating the final offer.

    The appendices contain several examples of resumes including eXtreme(tm) makeovers and a Value-Based(tm) one as well as an example of a cover letter - "the only cover letter you will ever need." These are key ingredients for your guerrilla arsenal.

    This book is informative, easy to read, and has numerous examples to illustrate the tactics of a guerrilla approach to job hunting. Beyond the tips, tricks, and tactics for getting a job, the book is a launching pad for the reader to innovate ways of finding that coveted job. So, if you want a creative approach to finding a job and have fun at the same time, this book is for you.

    Mr. Perry's book serves as a reminder and an excellent guide to getting yourself noticed. It amounts to nothing less than a personal marketing and PR campaign. Not everything in this book will be appropriate for evveryone (my opinion), but I can't imagine that anyone would not find a significant number of useful strategies, tactics and tips.

    Mr. Perry's approach is becoming even more applicable and valuable in the age of personal media publishing, where everyone, it seems, has a public presence and persona. Finding those ways to differentiate yourself and get noticed (and yes, I think this applies to careers as well as other personal and professional endeavors) is all-important.

    My only reservation is that the book doesn't really handle the impact of information overload, and what happens when all of your competition is also aggressively marketing themselves (though I will tell you that Mr. Perry has some ideas on this... that I hope he'll include in his next publishing effort!).

    A must-read for job-seekers and anyone looking to become more visible.

    For 20 years I have been telling friends and clients that What Color is Your Parachute is the only book on job search you really need. I used it to make my most successful career transition to date.

    Today, Guerilla Marketing for Job Hunters is my TOOL OF CHOICE for the next successful transition.

    Where Parachute excels at helping you figure out what you do best/want to do, Guerilla Marketing provides those who already know what they can do with 21st century job landing strategies. Many of the strategies are not at all scary - even for introverts - but there are plenty of useful surprises. For example, the chapter on Networking *does not* suggest (abused to death) "information interviews" but does give some interesting, practical (and safe) online ways to network. The chapter on researching and approaching your prospects is also superb, and the tips work.

    The ten pages that Perry and Levinson devote to resumes are worth the price of the book. Now I don't have to go black in the face explaining that a successful resume highlights what you can do for the employer, not your life history - I can just refer them to the experts' succinct take on the value-added resume.

    I had been looking for a sales job for 60 days. I was getting discouraged and also depressed. I was applying to jobs on job boards and networking with friends and past customers but nothing was happening. I was not getting any interviews. I came across this book and felt a sense of relief as I started reading it as the author seemed to really get it and understand how to get interviews. I learned how to target my networking instead of wasting time having lunch with those who could not really help me. I learned how to google the type of jobs I am looking for that are listed on company websites I normally would not have found. I also learned how to understand what my personnal brand is and sell it to an employer. Before my first face to face interview I did the T-Account exercise which helps you overlay your accomplishments over the employes needs and it helped me see I was the perfect candidate. I haven't gotten a job yet but I know I will with the help of this book. I can't thank the author enough for writting this book. It saved me from months of discouraging job seeking and has really helped my attitude knowing I have the best knowledge available for finding a job.

    I caught this book profile on Tech TV and was curious, so I purchased it. Now I have been employed in a position for 2.5 years that is less than ideal. I was structured out of my former position after 27 years and was beginning to think I wasn't capable of finding the same kind of employment as I previously had. Received and read this book and I went from zero prospects to 2 callbacks after many applications and it (my situation)looks more promising. This book offers several ideas , angles and suggestions to warrant the price. A valuable tool to use for seeking employment.

    An individual can learn a lot from this book as I have, not only about myself, but how others can succeed. If one is to read through this book they may not be able to utilize all the materials in one fowl swoop, but just even bits and pieces can help. For myself, I had been struggling with some dead end jobs and had a lot of experience to offer yet felt it was being under utilized, best thing to do is find a business out there that needs what you've got to offer not necessarily even having the job available, do the research and find wht their competition has that they lack, cereate the white papers etc.. take time to investigate. The doors will only open sometimes if you make them open and David has really helped with that. I would encourage anyone to read this great book and take in knowledge of someone in the industry already for many years has to offer, why spend money on an education when others are willing to offer you theirs not just from a theory standpoint but very practical. Thank you to the publishers of this book, the best reference material someone has ever suggested to me. I had 1 job, then 2, started a business, quit the first job, maintained the second cause it is a blast and they appreciate me. My new clients have been quite content too, all is better because of this book - it makes a person think twice of what value they do have.
