The Heart of Coaching is by far the best book on the subject of coaching I have read to date. As a management consultant, I have learned that the most difficult challenge in coaching is blending the "heart" of coaching with measurable results. Tom Crane has skillfully blended the "soft" coaching skills that are neccesary for coaches to inspire and motivate with the "hard" skills of measurably improved performance. It is the latter which is essential for continuing organizational support of any coaching program. Without results, coaching will not be effective. I have been recommending this book to managers around the world because it achieves that delicate balance between organizational culture and individual performance. It is also filled with fun, inspirational quotes, and is easy to read without being too basic. Another "must read". |

I wanted to write a recommendation for this book 3rd edition and noticed a recent review that said that it was "dull" and not very inspiring. I couldn't disagree more! I have been a management consultant for over 20 years and own no less than 40 books on coaching and feedback, and this is one of the best. I say this for three main reasons; it is detailed enough to be useful to a real world manager without being so overwritten as many books are, the coaching process the author recommends is well reasoned and anchored in established knowledge about human nature, and it is quite inspiring in part because of the many quotes drawn from a wide diversity of sources. The new edition includes a very good and concise section on Executive coaching, along with other updates. It is a particularly good book to give to managers who have not found the "heart" to coach employees respectfully even when they are angry with them! |
