This book is just simply amazing. When you open each page you cannot stop but to wonder how on earth do they figure out how to not only design and engineer its illustrations but also how to implement it and still manage to sell it at a reasonable price. The content is very informative and educational. Definitely something that one can re-read with interest for many years. It also works great as a reference book for children and it could very easily be helpful for one of their school projects. Speaking of school, instead of getting a mug as an appreciation book for your kid's school teacher, consider offering this book. It is money well spent.

"This beautifully illustrated book would have been called a 'pop-up' book in the past, but this one is so beautifully done that Sabuda and Reinhart are being called 'paper engineers' for their stunning work. The book, which features six spreads of three-dimensional dinosaurs accompanied by colorful, descriptive text, is being hailed as a 'triumph of paper technology.' A slight caveat should be noted by librarians: Although this book is on the current Texas Bluebonnet Master Reading List and the American Library Association's Notable Children's Books List, this book will not stand up to repeated library circulations. However, it could be used in-house, for storytime, or displayed and shown to young readers as an example of just how beautiful and exciting a book can be!"

This is not your father's pop-up book! My son received this as a gift, but all of us in the family have been through it before he's had a chance, and we are in complete awe. I could not believe that art like this is even possible. Oh, and I learned something about dinosaurs too. I think the last time I was interested in dinosaurs, some of the theories and discoveries were quite different.

You do have to watch out, with enthusiastic children, that they learn to be gentle with the pages and especially the little sub-pages that are tucked into little corner pockets. Our book has survived a 6-year-old's browsing (after a bit of preparation)

The pop-ups don't just offer a third dimension, many of them follow an action, such as snapping or attacking or eating, while you open the page. A good way to keep the book from over-opening is to read it on a table or desk, since it seems pretty stable when open a full 180 degrees, but there will be some angle beyond that - at which the pop-ups could be damaged.

As others have said, this is a beautiful and rather stunning volume. It is great fun for kids and even I enjoyed it. Until you get a bratty nephew over who has consumed far too much Coca-Cola, ring-dings, pop-rocks, razzes, or whatever other form of sugar, sucralose, dextrose, caffeine and spine-curdling, heart-racing, speed-like inducing additives his parents could find and gets a hold of it. Then the wonderful pop-up's become something that resembles the work of a wood chipper or pencil sharpener.

What a charming and unique skill that Mr. Sabuda has...I've had the chance to see several of his pop-up books and am continually amazed at the detail and creativeness that he brings to each new book he does. What better subject for kids than dinosaurs. Years pass, kids change, but dinosaurs are always a popular subject among school children. Open the pages to find six ornate, delicate popups of various dinosaurs including: Brachiosaurus, Triceratops, and, of course, a T-Rex that virtually leaps out of the book. Mr. Sabuda never fails to amaze me with his skill and sense of wonder. Another outstanding effort!

What is truly remarkable about Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs is not just the extraordinary pop-up figures and facts and information about the various dinosaurs included in the short journey through "Jurassic Park" (and then some), but it is the engineering required to create such wonderful, three-dimensional art on a mass-produced scale. The Tyrannosaur jumps up from the page in a colorful, angry roar, while the detail of the Ankylosaur, Triceratops, and Brachiosaur are almost beyond description. The detail in many of the dinosaurs' vertebrae, for example, is amazing.

While the pop-up art steals the show, the information about the various species of dinosaur make Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs more than just a picture book. Details relating to each featured animals habits, diet, and place in history make the title much more than just a picture book.

Dinosaurs are big (pardon the pun) right now and Sabuda does them right in Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs. This is a "must-have" book for young elementary school children.
