Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart, experts at the pop-up book, have put together "Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs," and it is very impressive. It has more than 35 pop-ups and a lot of scientific information on more than 50 different species of dinosaurs. It isn't just fun - it's a spectacular learning tool.
The paper animals are colorful and often scary looking, with spikes, horns and beaks. Some look every bit like giants - a large winged archaeopteryx soars toward the sky; the huge brachiosaurus seems to fill the room as it rises out of the book; and the jaws of the fierce T-Rex leap up to take a bite out of you as you turn the page. At least one of the pieces is gory, as it shows one lizard ripping open another in a fight to the death. Kids who are dinosaur fans will love it.
The dinosaurs are surprisingly colorful. There's even a volcano erupting and an asteroid hitting the earth, offering explanations for the sudden mass extinction of the great beasts.
But you should keep two things in mind:
1. The text may be a bit challenging for younger children. As another reviewer said, it reads like an encyclopedia. But, I think the maturity of the text makes this more than just a well done children's book and could help younger kids transition into tougher reading.
2. These paper constructs are very complicated and more delicate than your usual pop-up. They seem pretty durable, but there is a lot more that can be messed up by incautious hands. If you have kids under 5, you may need to take extra precautions, because they will want to touch these incredible designs as soon as they see them.

Robert Sabuda is often referred to as the "Prince of Pop-ups," Robert Sabuda is the best-known pop-up book artist working today, and is the creator of the remarkable Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and The Night Before Christmas Pop-up.
He has also created books that use a variety of media in inventive ways. Examples range from simulated handmade Egyptian papyrus for his book Tutankhamen's Gift, to paper cut to look like mosaics in Saint Valentine, to paintings that resemble stained glass for Arthur and the Sword.

Open this book and a massive T. REX spring out, flashing a startling jarful of jagged teeth. Turn the next spread and a ravishing raptor unfurls and appears to fly off the edge of the page. Inside the amazing Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs are "shield bearers" in full-body armor, creatures with frilly headgear, and weighty, long-necked giants. There are even amusing tidbits on the history of paleontology itself - like a pop-up version of a Victorian New Year's dinner in the belly of a dinosaur model, or a pair of scientists locked in a literal tug-of-war over bones.
Full of fascinating facts and lighthearted good humor, this breathtaking book includes fascinating, up-to-the-minute information about popular dinosaurs as well as many lesser-known varieties. With each of six spreads featuring one spectacular, large pop-up as well as booklets of smaller pop-ups and text, Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs is a magnificent display of paper engineering and creativity - an astonishing book that will be read, admired, and treasured forever.

This book is just simply amazing. When you open each page you cannot stop but to wonder how on earth do they figure out how to not only design and engineer its illustrations but also how to implement it and still manage to sell it at a reasonable price. The content is very informative and educational. Definitely something that one can re-read with interest for many years. It also works great as a reference book for children and it could very easily be helpful for one of their school projects. Speaking of school, instead of getting a mug as an appreciation book for your kid's school teacher, consider offering this book. It is money well spent. |

"This beautifully illustrated book would have been called a 'pop-up' book in the past, but this one is so beautifully done that Sabuda and Reinhart are being called 'paper engineers' for their stunning work. The book, which features six spreads of three-dimensional dinosaurs accompanied by colorful, descriptive text, is being hailed as a 'triumph of paper technology.' A slight caveat should be noted by librarians: Although this book is on the current Texas Bluebonnet Master Reading List and the American Library Association's Notable Children's Books List, this book will not stand up to repeated library circulations. However, it could be used in-house, for storytime, or displayed and shown to young readers as an example of just how beautiful and exciting a book can be!" |

This is not your father's pop-up book! My son received this as a gift, but all of us in the family have been through it before he's had a chance, and we are in complete awe. I could not believe that art like this is even possible. Oh, and I learned something about dinosaurs too. I think the last time I was interested in dinosaurs, some of the theories and discoveries were quite different.
You do have to watch out, with enthusiastic children, that they learn to be gentle with the pages and especially the little sub-pages that are tucked into little corner pockets. Our book has survived a 6-year-old's browsing (after a bit of preparation)
The pop-ups don't just offer a third dimension, many of them follow an action, such as snapping or attacking or eating, while you open the page. A good way to keep the book from over-opening is to read it on a table or desk, since it seems pretty stable when open a full 180 degrees, but there will be some angle beyond that - at which the pop-ups could be damaged. |

As others have said, this is a beautiful and rather stunning volume. It is great fun for kids and even I enjoyed it. Until you get a bratty nephew over who has consumed far too much Coca-Cola, ring-dings, pop-rocks, razzes, or whatever other form of sugar, sucralose, dextrose, caffeine and spine-curdling, heart-racing, speed-like inducing additives his parents could find and gets a hold of it. Then the wonderful pop-up's become something that resembles the work of a wood chipper or pencil sharpener. |
