This book has deeply influenced many more of today's highly-touted spirtual authors than those who acknowledge it as a source of inspiration. Still, most Course students do not address one of the Course's basic tenets: that God has chosen the "holy relationship" as His means for our awakening, and that we will have to learn to use both our bodies and relationships differently for this Plan to be fulfilled. As the Course says, "we can either have freedom of the body, or freedom of the mind, but not both." And, "all our problems stem from a sense of lack that we project onto each other, creating defensiveness and strengthening the Voice for Separation (ego)."

I believe this information is a reference to relearning sacred sex techniques that prevent a post-passion sense of lack. Neuroscience is now beginning to reveal the precise changes in the brain that follow passion, and linger for days, leaving lovers more prone to emotional separation. No wonder we have love and fear confused, as the Course insists. Fortunately, there is a way around the problem, which also leads to "true pleasure" and stronger relationships - just as the Course promises.

I hope that someday Course readers will tap this book's full potential, rather than focusing solely on a handful of its many gifts.

First, let me say that some of the reviews for this book have been quite interesting. Some people worship it, and others appear to take the tried-and-true approach of the dogmatic church, ready with fistfuls of hellfire and brimstone.

It is, yes, something of a reiteration of the Nag Hammadi codices, Gnostic, Hermetic and early Christian thought. You know, pre-persecution. It also has a bit in common with Sufi Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, Qabbalistic leanings and even a bit or two that Ghandi wouldn't have seemed out of place saying.

Of course, this sparks off all the "heresy alerts" of the afore-mentioned dogma-hounds. In my opinion, the same people who's predecessors went berserk on people in the fifteenth century for offenses that would have been considered good piety in the fourteenth. Or, for a more familiar name, the Pharisees and assorted religious scribes of the Bible. Letter before spirit, all that. These tend to be very earth-bound people, and ecstatic spiritual revelations rarely sit well with them.

Anyhow, it shouldn't be revered as much as some people seem to revere it. It's a great and challenging work, like most channeled works are (and there's a lot of them throughout history). Its main value, however, is that it uses modern terms and delivery to convey timeless concepts. In very nearly every religious tradition in existence, there is the less popular and "mainstream" but apparently more spiritual component. The Sufi mystics in Islam, Gnostic Christianity, etc... and this book seems to fall into that niche for this particular chunk of society and time. The Christian terminology contained herein is largely a place holder, but that's how most (if you'll excuse me) people are familiar with the names, stories and characters of the Bible anyway. It speaks not to religion or zealotry, but the human soul. Last time I checked, we all, regardless of which of the 57 Heinz varieties of faith we claim, have one of those.

A person's reaction to this book will, in my view, say a lot about them. This book is not the end, nowhere close, but neither does it claim to be. It is what it is: another one of the millions of stepping stones that one seeking truth and transcendence may follow to the Source. That said, it can be used to ends of great good or great ill, all depending on the maturity and sincerity of the reader. As previous reviewers have indicated, some might use it to deny or hide from their own impulses. I would recommend a reader to keep in mind that there is no guilt-tripping here... the aim is to transcend negative emotional, mental and spiritual states; not deny their existence and use them as a cover for our own sicknesses. Funny how that seems to happen.

Ecstatics are the punk rock of the occult world: don't expect clean riffs, fresh faces, mainstream charm or even well-played instruments. Instead, relinquish your expectations, prejudices (and some of the more pernicious of your pre-conceived ideals) and open yourself to the deep, luminous flame of divinity that inspires the entirety of human endeavor. Bask in warmth or sit frigid, it's all up to you.

After all, nobody's making you buy the book.
