A bestselling book on spirituality ranking #1,021 in books on Amazon.com as of January 1, 2007. |

A Course in Miracles is one of the deepest, greatest, and most intellectually challenging spiritual books there is. It s written from the point of view of our oneness with God, our perfection as children of the Father. Not unlike the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy, which were inspired by Christ, it considers the world of suffering, evil, and disharmony as illusory in the light of the perfectness of Creation, as the Father sees it. The aim of the book is to dispel the darkness our minds have created through the illusion that we are separated from God.
Many people have been helped by A Course in Miracles, which has the power to change one's thinking from negative thoughts of fear and limitation to realization of one's divinity. Another powerful book, which has come to us in much the same manner, is Messages from Jesus by Mary Ann Johnston (Saint Ta). This book, Love Without End by Glenda Green, and A Course in Miracles are all due to the instrumentality of Jesus Christ. Through His messengers, He is bringing us unique, profound guidance and information to help us fulfill our purpose here on earth.
A Course in Miracles provides all the necessary tools to allow you to experience a true understanding of who you are and your purpose. By putting its lessons into practice, you will achieve peace at a level beyond what you may have previously imagined.
A Course of Miracles has been overwhemingly popular for years. Over 230 reviewers gave it a collective 4.5 star rating on Amazon.com.

Review by Gail Hudson
When Helen Schucman, a professor of medical psychology at Columbia University, began hearing an inner voice of rapid dictation (which she eventually identified as the voice of Jesus), she decided to start taking shorthand notes. Then, with the support and encouragement of a colleague, Schucman continued to assemble the teachings that came to her. The result is A Course in Miracles, a book that has spawned hundreds of study groups and an international following. Although some may find the teachings simplistic ("To heal is to make happy"), many are struck by the pre- dominately compassionate and eloquent passages of this Christian-based interpretation of the Bible ("Whenever you deny a blessing to a brother you will feel deprived, because denial is as total as love"). Indeed, many of the teachings carry weight and certainly merit the acclaim and attention that this book has generated.

In our times we understand that identity confusion can lead to deep problems, but probably not the extent to which this is true of each one of us. A Course in Miracles is an in depth practical aid to unravelling the false identity we universally believe in and rules our behaviour. The Course takes the student more and more closely to the point where he can recognise the true Self, which constitutes the miracle the title refers to. The ego is sytematically examined and exposed as a false but carefully defended construct that blocks all true potential, greater than the ego can imagine. The Course's understanding of the ego and the true Self is in accord with the New Testament doctrine of the old man and the new man. However the Bible leaves the dots to connect more broadly spaced than the Course, and for this reason the Course becomes a very powerful tool for the serious student. It must be pointed out though that the Course is likely to offend the religious mind today as much as Jesus did the religious mind of his day, not for the sake of causing offense, but as an unavoidable consequence of paradigm progression. There are apparent differences between the Course and the Bible which in the opinion of this writer challenge complacency and have the effect of shaking the mind lose from limited fixations, freeing it for deeper investigation. The Course in Miracles is the most important source book encountered by this writer to date for spiritual awakening apart from the Bible. Although the framework of reference is Christian, the open minded will not find the lack of a background in or commitment to traditional Christianity a disqualfication. Not recommended for the fearful though. Expect immediate benefit, but its potential is really in its depth to reward sustained iterative application. |

Simply put this is an incredible book but if you see it as just another "spiritual book" you are depriving yourself of something incredibly life altering.
Like most of the spiritual books I had read at this point, I started reading this alone. I found it to be incredibly intimidating. Every time I attempted to read this book, I walked away from it shaken, disturbed, and completely baffled by it...but all in a good way...it was truly if I had entered into a parallell universe where everything was the complete opposite of what I had learned. It left me feeling like I was losing my mind and I was. I was losing my mind and learning to use and rely on God's Mind.
You see, whether you agree or disagree with what I am about to say is of no consequence because like it or not, it's the Truth and that is we, as individuals, do not have our own minds we only have access to the ONE MIND and that One, Undivided Mind is the Mind of God Itself. Now we can use this Mind in one of two ways; we can use it to perceive fear or we can use it to perceive Love. If we decide to use this Mind to perceive fear, we will also be using it to see what is false, what is ultimately not real but if we use it to perceive Love, we will be using this Mind to see and experience what is Ultimately Real.
The only thing that is Ultimately Real is God and God is Love and the only thing that is forever, changeless, and complete is God's Love. So how do we practice this lofty philosophy? By asking God (Love) to see through our eyes, to hear through our ears, to speak through our mouths, to act through our bodies. We let Love move through everything we do. In fact, as I write this I am mentally saying, "God use my words and make them Yours..."
Healing takes place by focusing on the Wholeness of God in any situation. I know that the average skeptic will be sitting there thinking that there has been a lot of situations individually as well as collectively that have been devoid of God. Actually, God has never been missing from any situation. The only thing that has been missing is a perception of God...a vision of Love...a realization that only Love is Real.
Like I said, this is an extremely tough read to go at it alone. I suggest getting into a good discussion group and sit with other people who are also reading this book and listen to how they are attempting to practice this in their every day lives.
This book will alter your consciousness in so many ways that I cannot even go into detail with the "hows" and besides, it's irrelevant. The only thing that really matters is that starting from this moment forward you are willing to start choosing with God. |

I was initially very resistant to the teachings in this book for two reasons: my disdain for Christianity and my reverence for life.
I have always bristled at the hypocrisy of Christian teachings characterized most poignantly by the various and many atrocities and injustices committed in Christ's name. Throughout history the the banner of the Prince of Peace has brought anything but. Yet this book helped me see the reasons behind that hypocrisy and the hatred and judgment I held for Christianity is being transformed into compassion. What was and is done out of fear and hatred is done in ways small and large by each of us. I realized that if I couldn't forgive the atrocities, I couldn't forgive myself. Through the words in this book my heart opened to the presence of Christ and that is a gift of inestimable value.
This book teaches that the world we perceive is not real. This to me was the most pernicious heresy because of my reverence for life and the Earth. To have that reverence belittled as mere spiritualization was galling, to say the least. Yet, I have slowly begun to see how we have created this world infused with fear and unwillingness to love. It is a prison to the God-beloved ones we truly are.
Yet this book does not offer an escape from the world; it is an instruction manual for changing the world, our bodies, our relationships and our personalities into messengers and teachers of love. In my understanding, that is reverence for life brought to its highest level. But to do that, I had to "take the red pill" and see the unreality of the world so I can begin to unravel it and take part in the liberation process.
That, I am certain, sounds like New Age blather to some, and so be it. If you choose the Bible as your teacher, there is little to agree with in A Course In Miracles, and much to fear. This book is a correction of the Bible in many ways and that is utterly heretical. Yet for those Christians who are willing to question what the church has taught and more deeply embrace what Christ has taught, this book could be a profound revelation.
There is no question this book is challenging and not for those want an easy, feel-good read. Many cherished notions will be gently questioned and laid aside, but it is so hard to hear the "gentle" part. Listen for that gentleness and you will be able to receive the gift of Grace a Course in Miracles offers. This book is really about healing all of us, not just those who walk this path. I invite you to read with an open mind. Thank you.

First of all, I'm not writing this to persuade anyone about the Course. Some people simply won't find this conducive to their beliefs, and that's okay. But for those who are willing to give it a try, let me divulge a little about my experience with it. I'm spiritual but also extremely skeptical, so I'd never been able to stick with any one religion or philosophical doctrine beyond Taoism in its ambiguous glory. The virtue of the Course is that it doesn't matter whether the contents are credible to you enough that you can invest in it your lifelong faith, because when you start reading it seriously and practicing the workbook, you will soon be faced with evidence that this path is real and one worth taking. It calls for your faith, but not because you'll be damned to hell otherwise. Your faith in the Course is required just as therapy would require you to have faith that you can be treated.
Having been schooled in a wretched fundamentalist Christian parochial, I try but fail time and again to fathom a loving God, and I recognize this fact more clearly and painfully now that I've been studying the Course. So I approach the Course from a secular and/ or psychotherapeutic perspective when I can't handle all the spiritual overtones, and it works. Take, for instance, Newton's third law, "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." We also know (esp if you're familiar with magick and witchcraft) that by some fuzzy logic "what goes around comes around," but the Course defines this in exact terms; whether it's God or our fellow men, if we put up a defense against Him/ them, we're doing the same to ourselves. By judging others, we judge ourselves, and as a child, by learning to hate myself as a sinful creature, I also learnt to hate God, even though on the surface I thought I was a devout 'God-fearing' Christian. The bottom line is that the Course allows you to bring along your doubts and to let go of them gradually as you become ready to do so.
But most of all, A Course in Miracles is a source of healing for everyone. If you're depressed or otherwise mentally unstable, suffering in some way from your past, or just stuck in some 'unlucky' life predicament, this book is a way out. Like several reviewers mentioned above, I never believed that one book could change my life. But it did. And I want it to do the same for anyone else who still wants to believe that there has to be more to this broken-down world than eating and working and sleeping and breeding and dying and then just maybe a Big Mean Judge waiting at the end. It's not easy, it's not instant gratification, but it's a solution and a permanent one, and it doesn't involve a bullet or fast train. |
