This book is a must for everyone. Religious or not. If you believe in God, all the better. But if not it is still invaluable information! Just cutting out some of the foods mentioned, my husband and I have seen a huge difference in our digestion system. Clearly our creator knew what he was talking about when he gave us a dietary law. This book also strengthened my faith. Some of the things mentioned in the law are amazing. Science has now proven so many of these things to be essential to our health. How did these people know that, they didn't. God did. In Ezekial 4:9 God gives a recipe for bread. Science has now proven that those ingredients combined create a perfect food. Clearly God knows what He is talking about when He gave us a dietary law. I believe the Dietary Law to be a health law. For maximum health follow His law given to Moses regarding food. This law has nothing to do with righteousness and only to do with Health. Do you think God told you to wash your hands before you eat because it made you a righteous person, no! Because He knew you'd get sick if you didn't.

I have read this book and I have read the bible! I find nothing contradictory whatsoever. This book points toward the intended dietary guidelines for better health. Biblically speaking God knows his creation better than the creation knows itself. I believe the dietary law to be nothing more than a guideline for health. You wouldn't put water in your gas tank so why do we put non-kosher food in our bodies? If you read the passages given about The Law they simply say that The Law does not lead to righteousness. The Jews got all mixed up trying to be outwardly righteous they missed the point. Jesus never said to eat whatever you want in Mark 7, that was Marks additional comments in newer versions. Possibly even added by people later as the bible was written over and over again. Jesus merely states that what comes out of you (evil thoughts, words, actions) makes you defiled not what goes in, he never says eat what you want. And in Acts 10 when you read the whole story in context you realize that a Gentile man was coming to invite Peter to his home. Then considered an 'unclean' thing to do by Jews. At that time Peter has a vision from God about excepting unclean things. Had he not had this vision he would not have gone to the Gentile home. But he never ate the foods described.

Bottom line. The New Testament is merely trying to make a statement that the whole law (food included) had nothing to do with faith and righteousness. It had gotten turned into a huge egotistical war. Abraham had no 'law' and yet he was deemed righteous by his faith. That was the point the new testament was making. That the law was just a guideline not a standard for getting to heaven. Do you really think God messed up? That he needed the saints going around correcting his error? I am sure Jesus would have been killed much sooner than he was had been going around telling everyone to have their pork and lobster! Why would he send demons into a herd of pigs if he was telling everyone those were good for food? The only fact remains that food is food, it only effects our health not our spiritual wellbeing! If you want to be healthy read this book! If you are ailing from any disease read this book!

Probably a great book and advice if you have a critical illness or health problem that nothing else seems to help. Probably a great book if you want to grow your own fruit, vegetables, raise your own cows for milk, cows for beef, poultry and fish. But for those of us that just need to loose a few pounds by avoiding fast food and exercising more this is not for us. I am extremely intrigued by a biblical diet and agree that people of the old testament did not eat pork and shellfish for a reason, I also agree that pork, shellfish and fried foods contribute to a lot of our health problems today. I do however disagree with the notion you should not exercise to get better. I firmly believe that exercise weighs equal with proper nutrition on leading a healthy lifestyle. I will keep this book to reference certain foods with its biblical belief but still find Body for Life a much better program. Again, I do not question the validity of it for people with serious illnesses like cancer that need a radical change in diet. It is just not for the rest of us trying to lose a few pounds.

Jordan Rubin's life was saved by changing his eating habits. He gave up the poor diet of a typical American in exchange for a diet based on foods described in the Bible. In the process he learned enough about health and nutrition to become an expert.

Is his diet good? I am not an expert like Rubin, but from all I've read, he seems to have a good grasp on healthy food and a healthy lifestyle. His book is easy to read, and if his diet is followed I have no doubt the person on the diet will be more healthy. Most diets that increase persons' self discipline are beneficial. The book has an interesting, easy to read style. Rubin's practice of changing tone from chapter to chapter will keep the reader engaged.

Is this the diet for you? I doubt it. This diet takes a lot of work, much more than the average American will be willing to put into practice. The idea sounds good, but most people will not put out the energy it takes to make it work.

My suggestion? Unless you are a disciplined person, choose a simpler approach.

This book is an absolute revelation and eye opener. Anyone with health issues or anyone desiring to have optimum, must read this book. It uncovers ancient biblical principals that if you follow will gaurantee divine health all the days of your life. The first chapter of this book brings me to tears. Jordan's miraculous story shows ust that there is a Real God, and if anyone wants to experience the power of healing, it's available to all. I feel bad for the many ignorant people that put all their eggs into the diagnoses of a Dr. without first checking into healthy alternative options. Too many people are dying due to lack of knowledge. Well no longer are we blind to misconceptions of natural health remedies, that's been around from the beginning of time. This book will awaken inside of you a new revelation of what it takes to walk in divine health and live long. Don't let your life be robbed from you. God has given you all things to enjoy, therefore I encourage anyone who wishes to have superior health to invest in this book as well as try Jordan Rubin's health products on www.gardenoflife.com. You will truly be blessed! Here's to our health, we have to take it back, or it will take us!

Jordan Rubin has given me a step by step plan for improved health. The one thing America does not need is another diet book. Jordan has given the reader a total plan for health, not just weight loss. What an amazing experience to go thorough the 40 day plan with friends and coworkers. I have learned action steps for my health that I will continue throughout my life. The resource section and recipes are like having a coach with you at home. Unlike other health books, Jordan has given the reader those to turn to purchase tools that will improve their experience. The biggest connection that Jordan Rubin gives the reader is he has walked through his own health crisis and is victorious! I to am feeling victorious after going through The Maker's Diet, as I have increased energy and am closer to my ideal weight. One of the most important changes I have made in my life is that of the advanced hygiene program that Jordan recommends in his book. Who needs to fear flu shot shortages when you can daily improve your immune system! I recommend The Maker's Diet to anyone who wants to improve their health and the health of those they love.

I have long believed and followed Jordan Rubin's recommendations to avoid processed food and attempt to eat organic (dairy, veggie, fruit and meat/fish/fowl) whenever possible. At 44, I have never had any health problems, and my cholesterol has always been low - strangely enough, considering my diet consists of quite a few high-fat items (butter, cream, chocolate, cheese, steak, roast chicken, etc.) Reading this book was wonderfully affirming, realizing my gut instincts have always steered me in the right direction, as science finally throws out margarine in favor of butter, finds antioxidants in dark chocolate, and now confirms saturated FAT is not responsible for heart disease or high cholesterol!

I was suffering from some candida overgrowth symptoms, however, due to a course of antibiotics, and Jordan's book helped me greatly - his recommended diet (am now in my 3rd week) has helped starve the candida and I've lost 7 pounds in the process! Everything I've read recently points to sugar and grains as the cause of many diseases - and although it is hard at first to cut out sugar and wheat, it becomes much easier after a week! Adding in some berries after 14 days was a wonderful treat, and tasted incredibly sweet after my tastebuds were re-programmed.

As far as the comment by Daniel Edelen ("bad theology") - I am no expert, but here are my thoughts. Yes, Jesus abolished the Law of Moses - but His emphasis in declaring there was no longer any 'unclean food' was spiritual, not physical. Jesus' life and death achieved what the Law could never achieve - justification! The Law was declared fulfilled and we were entitled to all the advantages and rewards arising from perfect obedience (never before attainable!) However, the dietary advice given to Moses still contained much wisdom, as proven by present day science. After all, our bodies did not suddenly change physiologically from B.C. to A.D. Avoiding the consumption of scavenger animals makes sense from any vantage point. In summary - just because Jesus abolished the Law doesn't mean we should ignore the sound nutritional advice given to the Jews, since after all, we live in the same bodies now as we did then.

We are active, not lazy people - so exercise is not our main problem. Diet, anti-biotic use, and the MMR shot I think were our biggest culprits. My son has had severe food allergies, and asthma since he was less than a year old. He needed intravenous antibiotics at birth, and later, was allergic to the MMR shot, but the doctor loaded him up with Benedryl and gave it to him anyways. Most kids who out grow their food allergies have done so by the time they are his current age - age 6. Our son was not getting better as time went on, he was getting worse, and adding more allergies to the list - over 15 different foods now, and almost all the environmental allergies that are available on the scratch test.

Last July, we started the Maker's Diet. We have not followed it 100%, and have still seen dramatic results. We are more or less following the diet that you will end up with at the end of the 40 days. Our diet was already so restricted from his allergies; I couldn't see how we could eliminate much more, so we followed the same guidelines that Jordan Rubin followed when he was first learning to eat from the bible. (We also read Patient Heal Thy Self. This info. is in both of his books.) If it worked for him... why not us? We only had July, August, and Sept., before the first colds and flu of the season hit, and our weather became very wet. He did much better with his asthma - he was only on the nebulizer ONCE this winter! Last winter he had to use it over seven times!! This is a very dramatic improvement. As far as his food allergies go... we haven't been able to eliminate any yet, but his reactions are not as severe as they had been, and his environmental allergy reactions are much better as well.

One other thing that I had pestered the doctors about for his whole life was the smell of his urine - I know it sounds strange, but you'd have to smell it to understand it. They always blew it off like there was nothing wrong - it was just caused from what he was eating. Well, I'm here to tell you that after about 6 months on the Maker's Diet, his urine changed, and now smells like a normal human being's. The only real major changes we made to his diet were eliminating sugar, and refined grains, and adding organics when ever possible. He's allergic to just about everything else that the diet says you should avoid. The only supplement he's taking is the Primal Defense powder. (The HSO's are not "dirt", in the book he said that it looked like dirt.) The urine smell change didn't happen overnight like the doctors say it does. Doctors had told me that some foods (like asparagus) affect your urine odor with in hours, not over several months. Something big is happening - I'd say healing.

Other wonderful changes we have noticed are: He was borderline ADHD with signs of autism - that has improved. He now has an attention span, and makes eye contact with you. He is more loving and affectionate, he has a great imagination now (his imagination was previously almost non-existent).

If you have any health problems, even minor ones, this diet can help you. God gives us the information, but it's up to us to use it. Even if you have to start out making small changes in order to stick with it, it's better than none. What do you have to loose?
  • An American reader (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-05 00:00>

This is the first book I have read that goes to the cause, and exposes the differences between different diets people try, what parts work, and what parts don't. I thought that, like other books I read, the author's attitude would be 'Now that you bought my book, you're going to do everything I say, or you won't be successful.' It wasn't so! Page after page, story after story, case after case - yes there are real life cases from all kinds of people, I received a 'Let me share this with you. Do what you can.' attitude. After reading this book, I felt very comfortable that I could follow as much of this program as I felt comfortable and could afford, and I would get results. The Maker's Diet offers suggestions to guide you along if you want to participate a little or all the way. Jordan Rubin does a great job relating Biblical principles, how all these ailments have cropped up recently, and how we can do something about it. He talks about many common issues like intestinal problems, diabetes, even thyroid problems. Different members of my family suffer from a variety of these; I felt him speak directly to me about these. It made me feel like after I have all this knowledge, how can I not share it!
  • Hugh Victor (MSL quote), USA   <2007-01-05 00:00>

There's a lot of good information in this book, and the diet has helped many people. But I have intelligent patients who want more information and science backing that information. Many of them have also been put off by the Biblical bent, not to mention the relentless pushing of Garden of Life supplements. So here's what I'd recommend in addition to Jordan's book. Elaine Gottchall's Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet, the probable source of many of his best ideas. Kaayla Daniel's The Whole Soy Story to explain not only what's wrong with soy but what's wrong with highly processed health food products in general. She also explains how clever marketing convinces so many of us that unhealthy foods are healthy. If you are looking for one book to buy instead of this, go for Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions, which Jordan properly acknowledges as an essential resource.
