Is there a divine plan for health and nutrition that we can follow? Jordan Rubin emphatically says there is in The Maker's Diet. Based on his study of scriptures, health and nutrition, and his own experience of sickness and recovery, Rubin presents a diet and overall wellness plan that he believes lines up with God's plan for healthy people.
The Maker's Diet begins with Rubin's inspiring story of his battle with severe Crohn’s disease. His doctors called his case the worst they had seen. During college, Rubin went from the picture of health to death's doorstep - 6'1 and weighing 111 pounds due to digestive problems related to Crohn's disease. Rather than giving up after over a year of sickness, Rubin clung to his faith in God and sought one more solution. The final try was a man who had developed a Biblically-based diet and health plan. This early version of the Maker's Diet saved Rubin's life and led to his complete recovery and healing over the course of several months. He includes astounding before and after pictures of himself that demonstrate the diet's effect.
This experience inspired Rubin to enhance the Biblically-based diet through additional research and create Garden of Life, a health and wellness company.
Rubin emphasizes the benefits of natural and organic foods in contrast to the nutritional deficits found in processed and engineered foods. He also compares the nutritional value of foods God included in the diet plan for the Israelites versus those excluded such as pork and shellfish.
The book offers a 40-day diet plan targeting not only weight loss but overall health and disease prevention. It consists of three phases. The general diet is a list of foods to enjoy and foods to avoid during the phases. For example, Rubin encourages readers to enjoy beef but to avoid pork. For all of the food, he recommends natural, organic or free range products for reasons he specifies. He includes sample meals and recipes. His diet also includes regular fasting for physical and spiritual health.
His Garden of Life company supplies many nutritional supplements and products to complement the diet. He recommends some of these but also lists various other suppliers of natural foods and products for the reader's benefit.
Some of Rubin's comments focus on healthcare and exercise. These are not Rubin's areas of expertise. His sincere though pedestrian writing about these topics offers little insight and may do a disservice to readers who follow his advice too literally. At times he seems combative toward the medical profession, as he contradicts what physicians and medical experts would advise regarding medicine, vaccinations and exercise.
While some readers obviously credit Jordan Rubin for producing an inspiring diet and health plan with lots of useful and easy to understand information, others complain that many of his recommendations appear to be commercially motivated: many chapters of the book read like some marketing testimonials!
Those who posted negative reviews also questioned some of the concepts raised by Jordan Rubin. They insisted that, for example, the argument for eating only "clean" foods fails to ring truth. The Japanese, for instance, live longer than anyone and enjoy remarkably healthy lives, yet they eat large amounts of meat (especially seafood) classified by Dr. Rubin as "unclean." Rubin also cites many older medical texts that support his claims, although some of the science in those texts has been disproven in other areas.
And then, the author's own story relates his quest for health by noting he tried hundreds of different diets in an effort to erase his ill health before he settled on this one, supposedly God's very own. A different person might have responded positively to one of those other diets, as millions of others have, considering the testimonials we get in the cornucopia of diet books out there. If Rubin had gotten results from eating a Tibetan monk's diet, we'd probably be getting a completely different title for the book.
Last but not least is the immense discipline and faith required to benefit from practicing Rubin’s health plan, as a quoted reviewer has shared. Despite these drawbacks, we still think this book is a valuable diet and health reference and the best policy hence is to read the book with an open mind. You may have tried the other things but have not been successful. Maybe this one works for you even though it doesn’t work for others. Everyone says things from their own experience and perspective.

From the Publisher:
After nutritional consultant Rubin (Patient Heal Thyself; etc.) nearly died from an inflammatory bowel disease that caused him to lose 50 pounds and suffer severe pains, he devised an approach to health that combines wholesome eating with a heavy dose of faith. Indeed, while Rubin presents scientific evidence of his plan's effectiveness and detailed lists of recommended supplements and foods, the diet's religious aspect is fundamental. The 28-year-old Rubin bases his diet on a "Biblically- correct lifestyle," recommending the consumption of organically grown foods and frequently referring to the Bible on matters ranging from personal hygiene ("If the Maker has a preference, it might be the use of ritual bathing that combined bathing... with sprinkling") to getting tattoos ("Scripture warns against piercing the skin"). To help readers avoid disease and live healthily, Rubin lays out a three-stage plan. The first stage-somewhat restrictive, akin to South Beach-prohibits virtually all commercial dairy products, chlorinated tap water, many fats and oils, and all carbohydrates ("While it is true that the people of the Bible consumed a diet that contained liberal amounts of... carbohydrate foods, they were higher-quality, lesser-processed carbohydrates, therefore much easier to digest"). More foods are introduced in subsequent weeks, and those following the diet may eventually incorporate red meat, carbs and saturated fats into their regimens. Rubin's program will be difficult for many, as it calls for drastic changes in the way they go about their lives. However, his approach is unique and provides a refreshing, holistic antidote to many of today's fad diets.

This book is a must for everyone. Religious or not. If you believe in God, all the better. But if not it is still invaluable information! Just cutting out some of the foods mentioned, my husband and I have seen a huge difference in our digestion system. Clearly our creator knew what he was talking about when he gave us a dietary law. This book also strengthened my faith. Some of the things mentioned in the law are amazing. Science has now proven so many of these things to be essential to our health. How did these people know that, they didn't. God did. In Ezekial 4:9 God gives a recipe for bread. Science has now proven that those ingredients combined create a perfect food. Clearly God knows what He is talking about when He gave us a dietary law. I believe the Dietary Law to be a health law. For maximum health follow His law given to Moses regarding food. This law has nothing to do with righteousness and only to do with Health. Do you think God told you to wash your hands before you eat because it made you a righteous person, no! Because He knew you'd get sick if you didn't.
I have read this book and I have read the bible! I find nothing contradictory whatsoever. This book points toward the intended dietary guidelines for better health. Biblically speaking God knows his creation better than the creation knows itself. I believe the dietary law to be nothing more than a guideline for health. You wouldn't put water in your gas tank so why do we put non-kosher food in our bodies? If you read the passages given about The Law they simply say that The Law does not lead to righteousness. The Jews got all mixed up trying to be outwardly righteous they missed the point. Jesus never said to eat whatever you want in Mark 7, that was Marks additional comments in newer versions. Possibly even added by people later as the bible was written over and over again. Jesus merely states that what comes out of you (evil thoughts, words, actions) makes you defiled not what goes in, he never says eat what you want. And in Acts 10 when you read the whole story in context you realize that a Gentile man was coming to invite Peter to his home. Then considered an 'unclean' thing to do by Jews. At that time Peter has a vision from God about excepting unclean things. Had he not had this vision he would not have gone to the Gentile home. But he never ate the foods described.
Bottom line. The New Testament is merely trying to make a statement that the whole law (food included) had nothing to do with faith and righteousness. It had gotten turned into a huge egotistical war. Abraham had no 'law' and yet he was deemed righteous by his faith. That was the point the new testament was making. That the law was just a guideline not a standard for getting to heaven. Do you really think God messed up? That he needed the saints going around correcting his error? I am sure Jesus would have been killed much sooner than he was had been going around telling everyone to have their pork and lobster! Why would he send demons into a herd of pigs if he was telling everyone those were good for food? The only fact remains that food is food, it only effects our health not our spiritual wellbeing! If you want to be healthy read this book! If you are ailing from any disease read this book! |

Probably a great book and advice if you have a critical illness or health problem that nothing else seems to help. Probably a great book if you want to grow your own fruit, vegetables, raise your own cows for milk, cows for beef, poultry and fish. But for those of us that just need to loose a few pounds by avoiding fast food and exercising more this is not for us. I am extremely intrigued by a biblical diet and agree that people of the old testament did not eat pork and shellfish for a reason, I also agree that pork, shellfish and fried foods contribute to a lot of our health problems today. I do however disagree with the notion you should not exercise to get better. I firmly believe that exercise weighs equal with proper nutrition on leading a healthy lifestyle. I will keep this book to reference certain foods with its biblical belief but still find Body for Life a much better program. Again, I do not question the validity of it for people with serious illnesses like cancer that need a radical change in diet. It is just not for the rest of us trying to lose a few pounds. |

Jordan Rubin's life was saved by changing his eating habits. He gave up the poor diet of a typical American in exchange for a diet based on foods described in the Bible. In the process he learned enough about health and nutrition to become an expert.
Is his diet good? I am not an expert like Rubin, but from all I've read, he seems to have a good grasp on healthy food and a healthy lifestyle. His book is easy to read, and if his diet is followed I have no doubt the person on the diet will be more healthy. Most diets that increase persons' self discipline are beneficial. The book has an interesting, easy to read style. Rubin's practice of changing tone from chapter to chapter will keep the reader engaged.
Is this the diet for you? I doubt it. This diet takes a lot of work, much more than the average American will be willing to put into practice. The idea sounds good, but most people will not put out the energy it takes to make it work.
My suggestion? Unless you are a disciplined person, choose a simpler approach. |

This book is an absolute revelation and eye opener. Anyone with health issues or anyone desiring to have optimum, must read this book. It uncovers ancient biblical principals that if you follow will gaurantee divine health all the days of your life. The first chapter of this book brings me to tears. Jordan's miraculous story shows ust that there is a Real God, and if anyone wants to experience the power of healing, it's available to all. I feel bad for the many ignorant people that put all their eggs into the diagnoses of a Dr. without first checking into healthy alternative options. Too many people are dying due to lack of knowledge. Well no longer are we blind to misconceptions of natural health remedies, that's been around from the beginning of time. This book will awaken inside of you a new revelation of what it takes to walk in divine health and live long. Don't let your life be robbed from you. God has given you all things to enjoy, therefore I encourage anyone who wishes to have superior health to invest in this book as well as try Jordan Rubin's health products on www.gardenoflife.com. You will truly be blessed! Here's to our health, we have to take it back, or it will take us! |
