The Secret Life of Bees is the story of 14-year-old Lily Owens in 1964. Lily's mother died when she was young, and her dad, T. Ray, does not treat her like a real person. One day, Lily finds a possession that belonged to her mother. On the back, it says, "Tiburon, SC." Lily then escapes to Tiburon with her nanny, Rosaleen, and meets three sisters who keep bees. As Lily uncovers details about her mother, she discovers the mother that she never had.
This superb coming-of-age story grapples with issues of race, abuse, loss, love, and justice, offering a cast of vivid and complex characters. White's narration is superb, as is her mastery of regional accents, dialect, age, and gender. The voices she gives to the characters mesh perfectly with the personalities accorded them by the author. The novel is also true to the time period and place. The theme of the strength of female friendship and love is uplifting but never sugary.
Beautifully written and compelling, these prominent themes of the power of women and the bond between mothers and daughters is worked well into the plot.
It has to be said that girls would enjoy this book because of its girl-powered themes, while boys might have a more difficult time relating to Lily and the themes. The Secret Life of Bees is an amazing book that will be enjoyed by many.

Sue Monk Kidd's ravishing debut novel has stolen the hearts of reviewers and readers alike with its strong, assured voice. Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the town's fiercest racists, Lily decides they should both escape to Tiburon, South Carolina-a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. There they are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce Lily to a mesmerizing world of bees, honey, and the Black Madonna who presides over their household. This is a remarkable story about divine female power and the transforming power of love-a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

A morality tale full of honey and salvation that manages to avoid the stickiness. |

"I am amazed that this moving, original, and accomplished book is a first novel. It is wonderfully written, powerful, poignant, and humorous, and takes a line which is - refreshingly - strongly female without being cliche-feminist. It is also deliciously eccentric, which lifts it out of the usual category of a rite-of-passage novel into the realms of real distinction. DO read it."

"The Secret Life of Bees is a novel of love and almost unbelievable courage, the quest of one young girl in search of her mother and so much more. Sue Monk Kidd takes on huge things, and by writing about what is mysterious, even difficult, in life, illuminates what is beautiful. She proves that a family can be found where you least expect it-maybe not under your own roof, but in that magical place where you find love. The Secret Life of Bees is a gift, filled with hope."

"Sue Monk Kidd is an extraordinary storyteller. In "The Secret Life of Bees," she explores a young girl's search for the truth about her mother; her courage to tear down racial barriers; and her joy as she claims her place within a community of women. Beautifully written." |
