MSL Pointer Review:
Because I'm Worth It shows the series stars growing up and looking to the future. There are still plenty of plot surprises, and the breezy writing style brings in lots of humor. |

Teens and adult readers can't get enough of Gossip Girl, the anonymous narrator who made her catty debut in the bestselling Gossip Girl and titillated readers in the juicy sequel. |
- MSL Picks -
The fourth book in the Gossip Girl series opens with the beginning of second semester for the Constance Billard School girls. Some are finding out who got into their Ivy League schools of choice. Blair and Serena have become peer counselors for freshmen, including Jenny. Daniel and Vanessa are finally an item. Serena is totally in love with Aaron. Nate is finally arrested for his pot habit. Everyone is gearing up for Fashion Week in New York City. The anonymous Gossip Girl is summing it all up for readers throughout this lightweight, fun read.
This title is better than the two previous ones in the series because no girls are fighting over men and Blair's boring obsession with her virginity takes a backseat to better plots. Everyone in the book is having pretty exciting things happen - from becoming a NYC runway model, to having a film shown at a famous fashion show, to having a poem published in the New Yorker and getting a literary agent, to being accepted into Harvard or NYU. Blair even has been given another chance at her Yale interview. Remember how she kissed the last interviewer?
Because I'm Worth It shows the series stars growing up and looking to the future. There are still plenty of plot surprises, and the breezy writing style brings in lots of humor. The writer is making fun of the characters and their angst in a way the reader will enjoy.
These books aren't completely realistic - after all, how many high school teens only wear designer? But somehow it works - as a 90210-esqe soap opera that's pure escapism. Readers may want to keep a copy of Vogue handy to brush up on what some of the frequently name-dropped designers' creations actually look like. Because I'm Worth It is most suitable for older teens but this Gossip Girl novel is definitely "worth it."

Cecily von Ziegesar, a writer who is definitely of the world about which she writes - she attended a fancy Manhattan prep school and lived to tell all about it. She walks the walk and talks the talk, so her characters and their conversations and antics ring completely true

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up - All the regular cast is present in this fourth installment in the series. Situations and alliances have shifted, but these are still beautiful, rich kids whose lives are the stuff of fantasy, and whose achievements seem effortless. Almost by accident, Dan gets a poem published in the New Yorker. Vanessa's film New York is used as a backdrop for an important fashion show. Serena lands a modeling job just by entering a clothing store. However, there is also a darker side to the characters' lives. Neglected and unloved by their self-centered parents, these teens are dying to be noticed. Nate gets busted for drug use. Within hours of meeting a new girl in group counseling, he ends up saving her life when she overdoses. Things don't go well for Blair, either. She's still trying to get into Yale after botching her interview in a previous book. In this installment, she's about to fall for the older man helping her repair the damage of her first interview - until she discovers that he's not separated from his wife and that his daughter is a freshman at her school. Soap operalike, the trials and joys of these kids continue. Teens interested in reading about the lives of Manhattan prep-schoolers are sure to devour this book. - Catherine Ensley, Latah County Free Library District, Moscow, ID

School's almost over, and all of the characters of this Gossip Girl novel are stressfully awaiting their college acceptions (or rejections). This particular book is very full of suspense, and it really changes tone very quickly. It also confronts real issues with a I'm-a-spoiled-rich-kid flair. I won't give anything away as you may be planning to read it, but it is by far the best in the series. But, if you haven't read the previous three, you would be totally lost, and I recommend reading them before you read this one. It's a really easy read, it only took me a day or so to finish it cover to cover. I can't wait for the next one to come out!

This book was far more focused than the last in this series, the previous one (All I Want is Everything) being the worst in the series. I would have to say this is so far the best and just miiight top the first one, which I enjoyed so much. This is definetly Blair's book and some things we learn about her are interesting... but there is not so much of Serena. Mostly Blair, Dan & Vanessa, Jenny, and Nate. It showed the characters in reasonable situations, unlike some previous laugable ones. In addition, the author seems to have proofread this one a little more carefully than those in the past. Although this series isn't wildly intellingent (or close), it is highly entertaining and addictive... just like gossip. The characters now have a little more depth and are far more respectable, even when they are at their worst. It's worth the read.

It took a little while to get into, but I really loved this book. There's so much more going on in this book then in the previous three. It goes all over the place, none of the characters are really together. For instance in All I Want is Everything Blair and Serena were at St. Barts together and Nate and Jenny were dating. It makes the book so much more interesting and everyone goes way wild.
In this book Serena is a little obsessed with Aaron, a nice change considering how obsessed Dan and Flow were with her. However, she ends up making him a little uncomfortable. Usually I love Serena, she's so carefree and happy you want to be her, but I found her a little bit annoying in this book.
As for Blair, she has always been my favorite, and she definately shone in this book. She was less cold and went out of her way to hook Jenny up with some hottie from Bendals. I was a little worried for her, she nearly has an affair with a thirty-eight year old man, which is gross, considering she's seventeen. Blair really becomes human in this one, and her visiting re-hab and treating it like a spa was really funny.
Nate's story I didn't like so much because I thought the whole drug thing became a little scary. I mean obviously drugs are bad but you didn't really pay attention to the whole idea of Nate lighting up in the others, you just assumed that he, being the good boy that he is, wasn't actually addicted to them. Not only that but then the girl from rehab was slightly weird and that whole relationship, his story was a bit out there in terms of the rest of the book.
Jenny ends up finally making friends with a girl her age, only to have that girl become interested in more then friendship with her. Dan and Vanessa both finally get discovered. Dan gets published in the New Yorker and it all goes to his head. He ends up sleeping with a girl named Mystery who's supposed to be the next Sylvia Plath, despite her infamous yellow teeth. Vanessa of course stays grounded and is slightly miffed by her suddenly sold-out boyfriend.
It was an awesome book, and I definately think you should buy this one if you've read the first three. And if you haven't... this is an awesome series, buy them all !

I have read the entire Gossip Girl series and I must say that this is the best one yet. While I admit that part of my intial appeal to it was the mention of a certain Orange Pigskin Hermes Birkin Bag, I have now grown to know and love these charcters. This is certainly not your average teen book. In addition to more sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll than ever, we see our favorite characters all trying something new. We witness college acceptances, rejections, and everything else. I would tell you about the surprises we see from Blair, Nate, Serena, Jenny, Chuck, Vanessa, Dan, and the rest of the upper-east side socialites, but I totally don't want to ruin it for you! Just get the book and read it! You'll be addicted, baby!
